I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

1/6 wasn't the worst thing to happen last year. FEMA's response to IDA was 100x worse, ESPECIALLY AFTER GOING THRU THIS 16 YEARS PRIOR.

There are people STILL without Fema trailers in deep winter.

While I agree FEMA's response is unacceptable, I disapprove of this take. An attempted coup is top of the list. People were killed and there were people who wanted to hang the vice president.

Live broadcast covering all the speeches, etc. happening today. IDK if they're going to cover MTG and Gaetz's "Republican Response," but I'd really like to hear those two conspiracy theorist morons pushing the big lie even a year later.

When federal judges in Washington began hearing guilty pleas from some of the hundreds of riot participants who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 last year, some were highly critical of prosecutors for pursuing only misdemeanor charges, and not seeking jail time, for many defendants.

“Is it the government’s view that the members of the mob that engaged in the Capitol attack on January 6 were simply trespassers?” Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell asked incredulously in October.

“Is general deterrence going to be served by letting rioters who broke into the Capitol, overran the police … broke into the building through windows and doors … resolve their criminal liability through petty offense pleas?”

But for all four defendants Howell has sentenced, she has imposed less jail time than prosecutors sought, saying that government plea deals in most misdemeanor cases are forcing judges to choose whether short jail terms or years of probation pose a stronger deterrent. And her decisions are not unusual, a Washington Post analysis found.

Federal judges in D.C. have gone below the government recommendation in 49 out of 74 sentencings held for Capitol riot defendants one year after the attack, about two-thirds of the cases.

In eight cases where prosecutors asked for jail time, the judges instead opted for probation. Of the 74 people sentenced so far, 35 have been given jail or prison time, 14 home detention and 25 probation alone……

What they're doing suits me.

I don't fully believe in a theory of deterrence when the crime is one where the crime was gotten to by stages and was driven by emotion. I think that's the situation where probation does work.

I had it on for a while, and was actually moved by several of the speeches. They surprised me with their eloquence.

I would think most people found it and watched it, but for any who missed it, here's Harris' introduction and Biden's speech. Advance the video to 2:57 to avoid looking at and empty podium for almost three minutes:

Former McCarthy staffer who left to work for Cheney after Jan 6 disclosed a couple of interesting tidbits.

He said McCarthy never debriefed his staff after the insurrection as far as he knew, and didn’t check in with them that night. Pelosi made a point to touch base with McCathy’s staff when she saw them walking together and thank them for all their efforts.

He said Mo Brooks was cheering on the insurrection from the “safe room”.

The hardcore left care deeply about this. No one else does. Yup, there were some forkers who needed to be prosecuted. But man, y’all really want this to be a thing. And how about the loons comparing this to Pearl Harbor and September 11
Something to compare today to is Guy Fawkes day "A British observance, celebrated on November 5, commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Tonight would be comparable to bonfire night.

So what I see for the future is DT day followed by bonfire night. The day each year when we celebrate DT's failure.

Ah, yes, the silly mythical left monolith who get their jimmies rustled just because thousands of treasonous seditionists prodded by members of Congress and the then POTUS stormed the U.S. Capitol waving C.S.A. flags and attempted to overturn a lawful election. How stoopid is that? :p

Yea, I’d say it’s much closer to the Beer Hall Putsch.

That turned out great for Germany.

It's not like a homeless guy burned down a Christmas tree.

So much this. To have that awful take you quoted is to ignore the unprecedented lying by Trump and his stooges that whipped the deluded crowd into a frenzy. The cognitive dissonance is simply stunning. The same people who fixated on Hillary’s emails are just fine with WH people using encrypted burner phones to plan a violent insurrection. Where police officers were actually beaten and brutalized.

Also, Sykes has a good observation about the texts from Hannity that were revealed.

No. It’s just that no one felt this was a true insurrection where “democracy was in danger” except the far left. And I’m not saying you’re untrue in your feelings. Most of us believe you that you were concerned. We just think it’s funny that you think some hooligans, who didn’t even have guns, were even remotely close to overthrowing the government.
