It's very real that the President-elect is talking about it. And sure, in an ideal world, everyone would just ignore every ludicrous thing he says and he'd take the hint, this isn't an ideal world; if it was, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place. So these very stupid things end up being real things that, even if they're not going to actually happen, still have the potential to be highly damaging.

I think these things also have the potential to be more damaging this time around than the first time. Because Trump is the kind of person who's actually serious about the stuff he says, until it becomes clear that it's not going to happen, at which point of course he was never serious. But that relies on people being around him to make it clear that it's not going to happen. If he has people around him enabling his insanity, and not enough people willing to stick their necks out and fully oppose it, then the possibility of things going way too far is naturally higher.

And that's one reason why people talk about it.

You think all those oil and gas companies wouldn’t already have wells all over that icy landscape if there were?

No for 2 reasons

1, The greenlanders do not want that. They are very protective of their environment
2. Most of it were inaccessible before, but with the melting ice, it is becomming accessible but the greenlanders still do not want the kind of exploitation that the US companies imagines.

Having discovered something does not automatically result in oilwells all over the fragile landscape. US companies have been denied drilling and mining rights multiple times. Everything is not just about money. Except to Trump and those who support him. He maybe able to push it through on native US soil but not in Greenland.

So the only way he and Musk especially (those rare earth minerals that China wants to stop exporting due to Trumps tarifs and which Tesla needs) can mine greenland is by taking it by force
