Conversations like this are happening a lot more often on social media and this is the mindset of the progressive left. I’m thinking I need to reevaluate my voting this election.

I think ideological Conservatives are going to have to come to terms with the reality that their party, and some of their ideology, has been overtaken by extremists. And that the better course of action to fix that isn't trying to convince Americans that "both sides are just as bad" but, instead, dealing with the extremism that has gained a foothold in your ideological spectrum and rooting it out. In Biblical terms, it is time for you Christians to start applying Matthew 7:5.

True, but JimE was responding to my statement and in that context, RR is definitely valid. He has enough of a following.

The issue is there's nothing actually nefarious about what he's proposing.

I disagree. I understand that the term most likely comes from a procedure used in Canada to document and address the history and damage done by the Canadian Indian residential school system. It was in issue largely unknown by most Canadians and the government sanctioned a panel to do the deep dive and produce a report - it led to a national apology from the Prime Minister.

But when those like Reich use that terminology to discuss what they see are the rise and abuses of Trumpism, a movement of national United States politics - when he says that supporters should be "named" - I think he is talking about something with a potential to be much more sinister. After Communist takeovers in Southest Asia in the middle of the 20th Century, such commissions were established to identify and publicly name supporters of the imperial systems they overthrew. The result of those commissions was reeducation camps that people typically did not return from.

There's nothing wrong with law enforcement investigations of law-breaking. There's nothing wrong with legislative efforts, including committee hearings, to attempt to shore up weaknesses in American law, including anti-corruption law. But I think we have to be very careful about the rhetoric we use and the tools we use to accomplish those legitimate ends.

A "Truth and Reconciliation Committee" designed to publicly name those who the committee believes committed some injury upon American democracy is very dangerous IMO. It has a very authoritarian ring to it and isn't much different than the "lock them up" mantra that pervades some of Trump's support systems with their own obvious authoritarian tones.

As I've said before - conservatives expected peaceful Muslims to denounce the extremist elements in their culture. Now, conservatives must do the same.

But they won't, because of course we have to denounce the non-existent communist elements on our side, too.

So let me ask you guys, do you vote based on whether you like a candidates personality or based on where they stand on political issues that mean the most to you?

I’m not nor have ever been ashamed to vote for someone or to explain why I have. No American should be or feel like they should be. I’m not a Trump supporter and I have been honest about how I felt about him on here and in my personal life. The more I read about Biden and Harris the less I believe in what direction they want to take the country. So now I am caught in a dilemma, do I vote for policies I don’t believe in, do I vote for a person I don’t like, do I vote third party or do I not vote. I live in CT now so at this point it’s a given Biden is winning by more than 70% here.

on a side noteit’s ashame that we as Americans are so ugly to one another that we are name calling people who don’t vote the way we do should be a serious wake up call.

in this election, its civility. Thats it.

I was worried about in 2016 and it came to fruition. Trump drove a wedge thru the crack. Seized on the racial undertones that have been just under the surface in the Republican party for decades and was able to get it to a rolling boil.
Now, totally emboldened, he doesnt even care what he says or to whom he says it.

So yeah i already cast my vote last week early. And i voted dem down ballot because they enabled him. It wont matter here in Louisiana, but my vote will be in the blue column for Scalise, Cassidy and any other Republican that used Trump for political gain.

Well then you got some soul-searching to do.

If you are ok with how this country is currently headed after the past 4 years, then cast your vote.

If you want to return to decency and civility, cast your vote. ( and i have news....it will take more than 4 years to return to true civility and respect - so be prepared )

I had posted on another thread my interest to see how the R party handles 2022. Do they continue with this tack of aggressive, brow-beating, name calling etc. Or do they internally move back toward center? I suspect the former. Til they truly realize Americans are simply tired of the vitriol.

I disagree with this, I think extremist are the loudest in each party but not the majority. I think that there are things the dems support that I just can get behind. I think that to come here and give bible quotes and discuss Christian beliefs and then turn around and vote for a party that believe in killing babies would fall right under the hypocrisy you speaking about correct?

As long as they’ve turned you into a one-issue voter, they can literally destroy the country and you’ll be standing by watching it burn.

Is it really the Republican Party creating the unrest? If Trump wins there will be looting, riots and death, if Biden wins do you think Republicans will take to the streets and burn down cities?

Without a doubt. And when it happens, you’ll excuse it.

I’m a multiple issue voter. Are you voting for Biden because Trump is a terrible person or because you believe in the democratic platform? If there was a good Republican running that had an agenda of fixing illegal immigration, bringing back family values, took a stand against abortion, wanted lower taxes and believed in the American dream for everyone. Would you vote for him?

Bruh, i guess you havent been paying attention. Trump Supporters were blocking a Biden bus and rammed an escort vehicle. They harass and intimidate at almost every juncture.

Can you tell me when the last time you saw 4x4s with 8 ft flag poles in the bed riding around en masse? Never.

this is what Trump wants. pure chaos. If you cannot see this, and the destruction to our society and think you are immune or above it all, then sit idly by. The man has just said SOON AS ELECTION IS OVER IM SENDING LAWYERS INTO SWING STATES.
When was last time an incumbent or challenger SAID THIS BEFORE THE ELECTION?

I suggest you watch the HBO doc on the 2000 election and the Republican party.

    What are "family values" exactly?

Lower taxes ? How do you propose to pay for things? ( tax is govt revenue )

a Republican that holds the "american dream for everyone" is a Democrat bro.
