There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

I would expect a pretty big line the first day or so. But that it will taper off after that. I believe most states that do early in-person voting have it available for at least a week.

The lines in every major urban and suburban parish are going to be insane. Here in Orleans I usually go to the Lakeview Civic Center but I have to check out the set-up at the Smoothie King Center this year.

Yeah. When I lived in Jefferson Parish, it was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Early voting was packed; Election Day was worse.

This article does a good job explaining it. At quick glance, it looks like a 2016 voter law expansion to allow anyone to deliver a ballot for you (i.e. the designated person didn't have to be a family member), is being perverted. That they are using these collection boxes as a designated entity to 'legally harvest' ballots.

I will leave the legal technicalities to people more familiar with law, but the GOP pushing the unofficial ballot collection points so hard after fighting against it the past few years should give people good reason to be skeptical of their motives. Especially when you keep in context that California has plenty of official ballot drop off locations, compare that to the GOP’s stance in Texas where they fight to reduce the number of drop off locations to one per county.

Whether or not the GOP is successful at what they attempting to do, you people should be outraged at what they are trying to do.

Thanks for reading the article I posted but didn’t have time to read and then explaining it to me. 😂

I’m intrigued by this, will read more.

Yeah, they are playing the long con again. This is just them laying the ground work so when the next time they pull this...

Leslie McCrae Dowless was charged Tuesday with two counts of felony obstruction of justice, perjury, solicitation to commit perjury, conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal possession of absentee ballots, according to a statement by Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman.

    ...they'll get away with it.

I'm sorry, I've been working all day and only was on here a bit. I thought you posted a tweet from CNN, that linked a CNN article. I found an article from the Sacramento Bee, that I thought got into the details a bit more. Did I miss something from earlier?

Or using California as a sacrificial lamb to lay the groundwork for tighter restrictions to combat voter fraud. Remember historically the GOP pushes to make voting more difficult in the name of voter fraud and the response has always been that voter fraud is a minuscule amount. That narrative can change if you manufacture voter fraud.

Or it could be as simple as hoping for a legal battle to cast doubt on the election.

Who knows, but it certainly is not to help all voters.

I haven't had time to dive into this - can somebody tell me what the hell the CA GOP is doing and why they think they can keep doing it?
Very short version, CA recently passed a law allowing party operatives to collect ballots to deliver to official ballot drop off locations.

The Republicans in the state legislature protested saying it would lead to fraud.

So what they are doing is putting up these boxes that say "official" drop box and "nana bana boo booing" the state saying that they have the legal right to collect as many ballots as they want.

The state keeps saying, yes you do, but you can't falsely label them as "official" drop boxes.

    Despicable.

Somehow this seems like something Devin Nunes would do.

    I wasn’t being sarcastic.

I appreciated that you read it and explained it.

They have since removed the “official” from the drop boxes. But it is unclear to me whether what they are currently doing is legal or not. If the current boxes are legal I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with the GOP collecting ballots to drop off at official drop off locations, but it’s the same GOP who were previously against this. And the same GOP who want to reduce ballot drop off locations in Texas.
