There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

If I have to put on a complete hazmat suit to vote, then so be it. I'm voting his arse out of office and into jail. Hopefully some of his enablers will see jail time as well.

It's really not that bad out there you know. Voting will be safe as long as people social distance and wear masks.

As long as the government guarantees every polling district gets the same waiting time, I'm down with that. What do you think?

I really, really hope they're successful with this.

Does it have to go through the Senate? Because I think you know the answer if it does.

Way to make a self fulfilling prophecy. What’s the excuse for these current USPS moves? I want the Trump supporters on this board to tell us why it’s ok for Trump to openly admit he’s suppressing voter rights. Even if you have zero support for universal vote by mail, this is taking a dump on those who have to vote absentee.

I honestly have no idea how this trump donor was even allowed to run the USPS. I guess there isn't some kind of vetting process, you know, to avoid conflict of interest

"The United States Postal Service is removing mail sorting machines from facilities around the country without any official explanation or reason given, Motherboard has learned through interviews with postal workers and union officials. In many cases, these are the same machines that would be tasked with sorting ballots "

How in the HELL is this happening???? Where are the "checks and balances"?

Nancy Pelosi is going to shake her first and demand that the Postmaster General seriously consider possibly appearing before a committee in six weeks. Mitch McConnell ran out of town as fast as he could to avoid giving unemployed people money. Susan Collins has already sent a letter (lol) and will insist that she is "concerned" and "disappointed" on her re-election campaign trail.

Anyone that wants to vote can still vote. Just like last the last election and the primaries and your trips to the store.
The last election, people who wanted to vote by mail or absentee vote could do so knowing that their vote would be counted. That's not the case this time.
If Biden wins, outside of outright murder in public, keep quiet on anything that the Biden adminstration does.

Astonishing to see this unfold in America.
What's more astounding is the number of trump supporters looking the other way as it happens. You don't have to go very far to see it.

Apparently, he and his wife have $75,000,000 invested in companies in direct competition with the USPS too. Like UPS, DHL, FedEx, and others. If THAT isn't a conflict of interest, I don't know what is. Donors getting Ambassadorships and positions like Postmaster General are obviously conflicts of interest as well if the person has no qualifications, but the financial implications in this one are shocking.

I had voted by mail in the general election since 2008.. if I had to guess I'd say that my vote would probably be received in time this year because I live in the Republican stronghold of Escambia County, Florida. But I'm going to go ahead and vote in person this year anyway.

If I lived in a Democratic stronghold area though I honestly wouldn't have any confidence in being able to vote the same way I had been doing it since 2008.

First off, I have voted by mail for years. I did again this primary, and local election primaries. Luckily, mine has been delivered and counted already.

Secondly, it's not just about the election. But I'll get to that in a second. It's about all of your mail. Bills. Certified letters. Packages from your family or friends. Medicine delivered for you or your pets. and so on.

For the election, it's clear this is being done to build a case to 'create' the illusion of voter fraud, or arguments that ballots can't be counted without a post mark, or with only a certain date, or had to be delivered by a certain time. They'll change their argument to remove as many ballots from areas that are more likely to vote democrat. We should let the process play out how it has always played out. But, if you honestly think there isn't a strong public demand for 'contactless voting', where you can do it from home, just like there are massive 'contactless' options for getting stuff from the store, you're not paying attention.

I haven't been in whole foods once since the pandemic hit here. I"ve done their delivery the rare times I order. For Target, I've only been in their store like twice, before that, I was doing curb side pick up. The only store I had been in regularly was Publix. Everywhere else, if there was an option to not go in, I was taking it. And I'm not really an 'at risk' person, other than being over weight.

Even in a normal year, there are likely millions of mail in ballots of some type.. regular mail in or absentee. I didn't look up the exact numbers. There are also dates where you can still request a ballot, and that is now being undermined by no fault of the voter or of the local election officials.

A lot of it also depends on how many polling locations there are set up in the area. When I did early voting like 8-10 years ago, I was in line for 1-2 hours. I guess I made the mistake of going in on a saturday. It also depends on the location. I happened to be living in an area that shared polling with a less affluent area, so I think it was done on purpose. When I moved to a richer neighborhood, it was like a 5 minute line. Granted, I also went on an weekday evening. So, I'll admit, that observation may not be great.

Anyway, my vote got there this time.
