Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

I really should save this picture. I'm sure I will use it again.

I have been listening to The Rest Is Politics US with Anthony Scaramucci for many months and he has been saying exactly what this article says. Do not acquiesce to his extreme positions and he basically relents or focuses his energy elsewhere. Appeasement is the worst strategy.

Yes, as it is with any bully.

This is very sobering. I would encourage you all to watch it.

the jist of that is simple- Trump cannot "force" China to buy US made goods that are inferior. At the end of the day, its all "free market enterprise"

So the ONLY thing he can do is what he has been doing over last 3 weeks- announcing "X country is investing $$$$Bs in US"

Are they? Really? Of course not. Its a ruse.

    side note:

My good friend lives in LA. He is a PA for some very very wealthy people. He was here just last week for Jazz Fest and telling me he just got hooked up with a Chinese guy who bought a $30,000,000 home and is about to gut and redo. And the Chinese guy lives in Manhattan 50 weeks out the year- this LA home is their 2 week New Years vacation home.

What does he do? He holds the patent and mfg license for a specific part that goes in EVERY SINGLE lithium battery. Dont know what it is, but whatever it is, has made this guy a billionaire. And no one even knows who he is.

But to the video point, he aint American.

China has been leapfrogging the US in tech for decades.

Actually, it’s simply that China is the world’s foremost champion at intellectual property theft.

I don’t think anyone has done anything about IP theft. Been going on for many, many years.
What exactly do you think can be done about it? Either we keep innovating or relinquish the cutting edge to them or someone else. IP theft is what it is. We can defend against IP theft to some degree, but it's not like we can stop China or anyone else from reverse engineering our stuff. They're good at it. Maybe sanctions, but even that has its own limitations.

Actually, they are still routinely ripping us off.

They are also out investing us, out sciencing us and out manufacturing us. That will only accelerate under this incompetent, stupid Trump administration with all of their "cuts". The US is well on its way to becoming a failed state and wasteland. Thanks, Trump!

It doesn’t change anything he said in the post. China made a decision to try to develop a much cheaper battery for EVs at a time when the US chose lithium ion batteries. At first they had less than 50% of the range of lithium ion, but the Chinese have been working on that for 30 years, and now the range is 80-90% of lithium ion batteries at a fraction of the cost.

This is most of the reason that Tesla sales in Europe have tanked. When you need to replace the batteries on your Chinese EV it’s about $2k instead of $8k. And the car is cheaper to buy on top of that.

The US can pretend they are always going to have a tech edge on China and ignore what they are doing, or they can wake up and invest in R&D and try to compete. We can all see the way the Trump admin is leaning. They want to cancel basic science grants.
