Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

House went on spring recess without fixing DC's budget. A local government hiring and purchasing freeze was just issued with an end to OT. Employees connected to grants getting RIF notices. I will probably lose at least a few grand due to loss of hours as part of budget cuts. I know so many people in the federal government who have lost their dream jobs helping people or the environment. It's been a recession proof city since I've been here and Trump broke that.

The goal of Republicans it to make others lives worse to feel better about their own mess.

Yeah, I'm almost certainly never voting Republican again. The party has completely capitulated to Trump and the extremist MAGA agenda. Fork every last one of them.

NY Post put up article stating Honda was moving production from Canada to US ( its the NY Post who jacked from some Japanese paper )

Canada and Honda both responded today.

Chatham Asset Management is an American hedge fund that owns Postmedia. Postmedia owns major Conservative, right-wing propaganda papers like the Toronto Sun (and other Sun papers) and the National Post. These papers have always been suspect, but they've absolutely lost their minds and any pretense to objectivity since Pierre Poilievre began getting hammered in the polls.

This 'leak' was 100%, imo, specifically directed to a Canadian audience. Postmedia is, and has been, working to influence the election by spreading lies and misinformation. This is part of that. It's designed to target specific regions in Canada, at the local level, so that Liberal politicians are put in a tough spot with jobs on the line. The truth of the report doesn't matter; only the political fallout does.

My Federal Representative is Liberal Anita Anand, who was responsible for securing COVID vaccines for Canada during the pandemic and Minister of Defence. She's great in many ways, but her position now is Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, which means she's the face of the Canadian government in these automotive talks. This might be the cynicism talking, but the race here is tighter than it usually is and sowing discord and working to keep her occupied and not campaigning.

The online movement of hate against her is pretty fierce.

I'm seeing it from the front lines here, with my Anita Anand campaign sign in my front yard.

Hong Kong Post said on Wednesday it had suspended goods mail services by sea to the US and will suspend its air mail postal service for items containing goods from 27 April due to “bullying” US tariffs.

When sending items to the US, people in Hong Kong “should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’s unreasonable and bullying acts”, Hong Kong Post said in a statement.

“The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively,” it said. “Hong Kong post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US.”

Other postal items containing documents only, without goods, would not be affected.…….

Trump is going to have a fit. Watch out for 200% tarif on chinese goods.
Yeah, it would not surprise me.

The Orange Orangutan (insulting to to orangutans) is waiting for a country, any country to “make a deal” with him. They aren’t because he is a whack job. Beyond that his deal making in his business has consisted of committing civil fraud, suing people because he didn’t want to pay, bullying building inspectors and getting mobbed up to get concrete on “reasonable” terms.

His instability is precisely what other countries do not want.

i think its becoming clear that his "tariff %" literally means nothing- its simply bluster - China has already called his bluff 2x now- and both resulted in Trump excluding items from his tariff list ( most recent was electronics )

I said long ago- he backed himself into a corner with no exit strategy. This is going to fail miserably for those who arent in the cult. Cultists will attempt to spin ANY Chinese negotiations as a win- even if we end up RIGHT WHERE WE STARTED.
