Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

Thanks for this

Do you have a rough idea of what that would do to the price of a product?

If a widget made overseas is sold in the USA to the consumer for $100 and with tariffs would go up to say $120

If this factory was built here what do you think the same widget but made here by American workers would cost?

$200? $300? more than that?
No idea. I'm just a construction guy. People go to school and work a long time in finance to know that stuff.

I owned my own company pre-Covid but it was small so I was in the group this tariff disaster is going to hurt the worst. The small businesses that make stuff. You know, the ones he said this would help bring back.

It's going to bury them.

They buy from wholesalers or distribution centers. They are one more link down the supply chain and therefore they've already paid the tariff when their material prices went up. Plus any oversees sales they did on their website, Amazon or alibaba or whatever is now gone. They just got priced out of every market in the world. And we are seen as toxic brand now to make matters worse. This will be a windfall for huge corporations.

Global Conglomerates can just rebrand in each country and move on.

In my opinion, it's purposeful. This is going to consolidate production even more. Small businesses are going to die.

so, i had moved almost my entire portfolio to cash a couple weeks ago (i had mentioned it here). I'm probably going to push it back in now. If tariffs stick long term, the market will decline further, but if they do get lifted soon, this is probably close to the bottom.. i generally don't go for timing the market, but the big selloff was pretty predictable.. I don't really know where things are going from here, so at least I missed a 12% shave...even if it goes down further, i saved myself some pain.

You just made a boatload

Well done

Didn't this moron just say hundreds called him begging him to negotiate and kissed his arse?

If this run up continues to get us close to our previous highs I'll probably sell off again - unless I think we're on a more stable predictable path.

The previous system we had was close to optimal for corporate profits, so deviation from it is likely to be harmful in the short term, which will reflect in stock prices.

All tariffs paused 90 days. Except China..now 125% lol
Lesson on how to turn an authoritarian who locks up whole groups of people in the millions for reprogramming into a justice warrior in the eyes of the world.

I can't believe i wake up to this every day and realize I'm not dreaming.

Yeah its all performative - i have to remember this when it comes to this kind of stuff.

This was all an act. Now claims 100 countries called to "make deals" - there are no deals. We will never hear from those countries on any "deals" because there is nothing to discuss. But Trump will sell it to his base as a win, others will think the same, and the end result is lavish praise.

Which is all he ever wants anyway.

I wonder who gets to ask Karoline Leavitt about her "no 90 day pause" comment Monday in press briefing?

Shoot- will anyone ask?
