Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

    This shirt is forking stupid!

    ...then there's this question:

OMG did Saintman2884 write that question in second post?

I saw armed security guards at a grocery store that I shop at today. The clerks working there told me that thefts are up that much with the costs of everything skyrocketing. I’ve never seen guards at that location (Southern California) before until today. Things are getting hot out there yall.

We have a call set up on Thursday from our fund manager. She initiated it on Monday when she called to set it up she said we need to talk about the markets and what is going on economically. She said she’s doing it for all her clients because the unrest is real.

I think I will know a lot once this call is over. I may not know where the economy is going for sure, but I will be able to tell a lot about her depending on how she frames everything.

I guess financial advisor or broker is the better term for her.

So my friend who sells construction material (in bulk ) down in El Paso. Has a large account about 2 hrs SE of El Paso he met with today.

The client takes the material to Mexico for assembly, then back across to Texas for distribution/sale.

Said all buys are on hold and his company and work is in limbo because the the customs folks HAVE NO DIRECTION AT THIS TIME. He also said that when he sends the materials to Mexico, he pays a tariff, and when he brings back to US, now another tariff. That's 2 separate additinal charges that he will now pass on to his customers

Trump has no clue how the real world operates. None.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick enthusiastically defended Donald Trump’s erratic tariffs on Tuesday, claiming that even if they trigger a recession they’re “worth it.”

“The markets are going to learn, let the dealmaker make his deals,” Lutnick crowed on CBS Evening News about Trump.

Lutnick’s comments were risky amid rattled investors, given that Trump’s on-again-off-again tariff threats and his nod to the possibility of a recession sent stocks tumbling Monday.

When CBS News White House Correspondent Nancy Cordes asked Lutnick “what is being accomplished” by never-decided tariffs, he insisted it’s part of a strategy.

“When you’re negotiating with someone and they’re not paying attention, and they are disagreeing, the president — who’s the best dealmaker ever to sit in that chair — is going to say, ‘Here’s my response.’ And then all of a sudden, shockingly, they respond,” Lutnick smiled.

“Will these policies be worth it if they lead to a recession?” Cordes asked.

“These policies are the most important thing America has ever had,” he responded. “It is worth it,” adding: “These policies produce revenues.”

Lutnick had just vowed on Sunday there “will be no recession in America.”

And the revenues raised by tariffs will be paid by Americans, which he failed to point out.

Though Trump has claimed that foreign countries pay the tariffs he imposes, they’re paid to the U.S. government by American importers, like Target, which pass on most of the extra costs to their American consumers in the form of higher prices.

Studies by economists have found that U.S. firms and American consumers bore almost the entire cost of tariffs — some $116 billion — in 2018-2019 during Trump’s first administration……..

Trump was not, is not and never will be a “deal maker”. He is a lousy businessman. The only thing he can do is grift.

Lutnick is heaping praise on Trump hoping he survives when Trump looks for someone to blame when things fall to schlitz.

In 2016 I remember Tony Schwartz the co author (or rather the real author) of Trump’s Art of the Deal more or less said the whole thing was made up, pure myth making

No more legit than the story about George Washington and the cherry tree

    He regretted it

How many bankruptcies has he had? It got so bad that he had to rely on European banks for his loans. If the sysytem worked, he would have been barred from running any company long ago. Something like Frank Lorenzo being banned from owning an airline, but 100x that.
