Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

so the economy does not involve consumers?? Who does it involve then?

Weve had discussion here. either @UriUT or @Incumbent or someone else posted a graph about "Consumerism" in the US.

That 80% of consumption is done by the top 10% earners.

The same folks that wont really be affected by ANY of the economic issues currently facing the US.

They will still gas up at $4/gal. Buy flights at 40% more per ticket. Book hotels at 30% more price. Shop/groceries at 25% more.

All because they can.

For now.

We have morphed into Russia.

I immediately thought of that, too.

One of the things that has amused me is economists talking about the U.S. becoming a consumption/consumer economy.

EVERY country is a consumption/consumer economy. Everything produced is produced to be consumed by someone, somewhere. Whether it is domestic consumption or exported for foreign consumption is irrelevant. The problem occurs in running into the combination of costs, number of potential consumers and number of producers. Capitalism has not dealt with and cannot deal with those issues except by elimination of competition. Attempts to support competition will run into diminishing revenue and/diminishing profit.
