There’s a lot of discussion of this in various threads but I think it needs its own. In the aftermath of Helene, we have Milton bearing down on the Tampa area. It looks like it’s gonna be bad. The FEMA Director has already said that additional funds are needed – but speaker Johnson has indicated that he does not wish to reconvene the house in order to approve additional disaster funding.

There have been 152 declared disaster areas in 2024 – I looked it up. They come in the form of fires, floods, blizzards, and ice, storms, earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. There is no set number of assistance funds needed in any given year, and anyone who suggest that “FEMA spent all the money” is being ignorant or worse.

Milton is going to be bad. This is going to be a big issue in the near term. And it counties to shock me that MAGA in Congress won’t vote for disaster funds - including people like Senator Rick Scott of Florida and Congresswoman Nancy Mace of coastal South Carolina. How on earth do they get re-elected?

And I just want to also say that I HATE the online ignorance about this stuff. Like people using a flight tracker of a NOAA hurricane hunter flight as evidence of storm seeding. It’s just so stupid.

He’s so close to getting it!

    why are people like this
This hurricane season, Cappucci and the other meteorologists I spoke with say, conspiracy theories have been flooding their inboxes. The main one that people have seemed to latch onto is the accusation that the government can control the weather. This theory seems to be amplified with climate change creating worsening storms combined with a tense election year, and the vitriol is being directed at meteorologists.

This is ironic. I remember Rush Limbaugh used to mock people for suggesting humans could alter the climate in any way, and I bet it’s dittoheads that have swallowed the ludicrous idea that it can be controlled. There isn’t any logic among conspiracists. They are willing to believe just about anything that comes out of the mouths of some of their MAGA leaders like Majorie Taylor Greene.

MTG believes the deep state puts something in the water that makes you pee.

The MAGA movement promotes an anti-science agenda, heavily influenced by TFG, who demonstrates a very limited understanding of science. However, those who hides in his shadow and support and guide him do know better. They deliberately foster ignorance and undermine education, making it easier to manipulate people into serving their hidden agendas. This strategic dismissal of science and critical thinking keeps their followers more susceptible to control.

conspiracy theorists have had a coming out party since Pizzagate. Used to they were madefun of, but now they are promoted by RWNJs and becasue of that, too many normal people start to put a little thought into it,... Humanity is definitely in a downfall period in history...

They just carried the DeSantis update live on TV. I was only half listening - but it sounds like the outcome was better than expected. A couple things I noticed as an aside: every state official that gave a report first heaped praise on DeSantis. Every single one. Reminded me of those Trump cabinet meetings where they obviously were told they needed to praise Trump before they said anything else. It was a bit jarring. I don’t believe DeSantis ever mentioned FEMA or any federal response. If he did I missed it. He talked all about the state response. And there were very few questions, but one in particular angered DeSantis - I couldn’t clearly hear the question - and he was his trademark complete butt crevasse to the reporter who asked the question. We need better people in government than DeSantis.

I don't trust DeSantis and his hand picked state officials not to downplay the outcome to make themselves look good. As you touched on, the press conference was just as much about praising DeSantis as it was anything else.

For the sake of everyone in the hurricanes path, I hope they are telling the truth that the destruction isn't as bad as it was feared it might be.

I feel sorry for you guys that have Trump loving cult members in your families. The problem isn't just Trump and Republicans, it's the whole right wing media ecosphere. They amplify and reinforce this cultish devotion to conspiracies and Trump in the hope of fearmongering their voters into putting them in power. The cost doesn't matter, just the end game. And so you get this type of lunacy. It all needs to come down and be trashed for our nation to truly move forward, but I don't know how you convince so many people to back off the ledge of this cultish devotion and regain their common sense. After so many years of manipulation, these people no longer have the mental clarity/capacity to realize how much they're being used and to turn away from it.
