So tonight is night 1 of the Democratic convention and we'll hear from John Kasich and Michelle Obama. Thought it would be good to have a central place as the old PDB days.

Joe’s speech was strong. Really strong. Not Obama-strong, but probably the best of his career.

Should put to rest those dementia conspiracies by the right.

But we already know it won’t.

They are already shifting to "oh so he can read off a teleprompter, so what!!"

It was a very strong speech for him. You can tell by the comments in the Chris Wallace peace from Fox News. Trump supports are freaking out and coming with their weak and typically racist, sexist and "OMG socialism" one-liners, lol. They know that speech likely connected with a more than a few people.

I think the saddest thing that's happened over the last 16 years (since Obama's election) is that conservatives have given up any appeal to a "united" country. That sense that we can and do have common goals and higher ideals, even if we as a country don't always display that or or live it out correctly. And to be fair, the progressive left (which I see myself as a part of) doesn't really push that narrative either. It used to be that there where moderate camps on both side that pushed that vision for America that we were, at least in a general sense, able to unite around. Now that message is almost entirely left to the moderate Democrats as it's basically disappeared on the right.

The only messages that comes form the right is that the left/liberals/democrats want to destroy the country with socialism, are evil and need to be defeated and controlled. Biden made a strong case in reclaiming that narrtive of a "united" country for us as a nation last night. For my personal taste, his speech was a bit too strong on American exceptionalism, which I'm often weary off because it's used a lot of times to cover up systemic problems in our country and give cover to those carrying it out. But I also believe it is something that is a necessary part of binding our country toghether and something that we can never give up on, even when we're as divided as we are today. That common goal, common purpose, universly held ideals, and defense of democracy and deomocratic institutions are vital to the health and survival of our country.

Is the RNC Convention thread not starting until Monday? I'm going to have to clear my ignore list to read posts about why we should re-elect Donald Trump because the Covington High School kid, the couple in St. Louis that pointed guns at people, and the My Pillow guy among other conservative luminaries believe we should. (I kind of wish that at least one of those examples was a joke and not real but, you know, 2020.) Will there be at least one QAnon reference? Will the Fox broadcast pump in "lock him/her/them up" crowd noise like they do for sports? I for one can't wait.

because the Covington High School kid

I thought, at the time when the details first came out, he got too much criticism

but the way he has handled himself since is pretty objectionable. He is absolutely embracing the 'internet troll' or 'provocateur'

he re-tweeted an image of Kamala Harris the other day that changed her first name to "***AllOnMe Harris"

    pretty vile

it's his choice, but were I a political party, I'd think twice before trotting him out on stage and turning him into a victim. I mean, I think he's become a not-very-Catholic person considering his schooling but there's also, politically speaking, the possibility that all of his shenanigans surface even more to contextualize his celebration by the GOP

I have missed that charisma. So genuine.

When you take CHA as your dump stat.

Psst: Ragging on Hillary for her lack of personal magnetism isn't going to get you much disagreement. Certainly not from me.
On a superficial level, Donald is far more engaging.

pretty minor slip up. I mean, the guy probably says, "Hi I'm Joe Biden" like a hundred times a day. It's like when you drive somewhere, and you usually turn right to go to work, but you're trying to go somewhere else, but you start to get in the lane to turn right, because you're on auto pilot.
If you listen to many other times he says her name, it often sounds like he's saying "Joe" when he's speaking quickly. I can't clearly tell if he's saying Joe or Jill and if this slip up is the red meat they've got...good.

If it wasn't happening so often I would agree with you. Biden has clearly declined mentally. Watch some videos of Biden from 2 years. Big difference

Yeah, that's weird -- when I heard it the first time, I thought he said Jill Biden. After SFL posted it as Joe, I can see how someone could hear Joe, but I think it might be a case of hearing what you want to hear.
