NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s top Republican leaders on Monday threatened to withhold tens of millions of dollars in state funding from left-leaning Memphis should leaders continue with plans to place three local gun control initiatives on the November ballot.

Earlier this year, Memphis’ city council approved asking voters in November if they wanted to tweak the city charter to require permits to carry a handgun, ban the possession of AR-15 style rifles and implement a so-called “red flag” ordinance, which allows law enforcement officials to remove firearms from those found to be an imminent danger to themselves or others.

The city council had been discussing the ballot measures for more than a year, acknowledging at times that they were potentially risking the ire of the Republican-dominant Legislature since the measures likely conflict with Tennessee’s lax gun laws.

Regardless, city council members representing the state’s most populous and Black-majority region said they were willing to “roll the dice.”

“This is an opportunity for citizens in Memphis to speak,” Councilman Chase Carlisle said during a committee meeting in 2023 when the measures were first being considered. “Whether it’s enforceable by the constitution or not, I think, is moot. I think it’s an opportunity for the General Assembly, whether they choose to listen or not, to understand where we are as a municipality. And to give voice to the people.”............

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Election officials in Memphis decided Tuesday to leave three gun control questions off the November ballot after top Republican state leaders threatened to withhold tens of millions of dollars in state funding.

On Monday, Tennessee’s election coordinator, Mark Goins, sent a letter to the Shelby County Election Commission warning that the gun control measures violated several of Tennessee’s laws, making them void and ineligible to be placed on the ballot. The letter was sent hours after House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Senate Speaker Randy McNally issued their state funding ultimatum.

Goins added that “unequivocable declarations by the General Assembly” left “no authority” for Memphis officials to propose such amendments to the city’s charter. Goins also raised concerns that the city had not properly followed the public notice procedures required to put a referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot..........

Was looking for this thread to post in. Hopefully we get plenty of thoughts and prayers from the GOP to make this better. You would think with the exuberant number of thoughts and prayers that have been made over the last decade, we would have this problem under control.

Ok, first of all, I expect a run by Republicans on grocery stores for tots and pears.

Beyond that? Charging him as an adult is psychotic. It demonstrates the absolute mess in the retribution system over the concepts of responsibility and decision making as related to developing brains. Imo, the kid is obviously damaged as there were comments that he was bullied. The human brain is not done developing at age 14.

They have to blame anything but the access to guns. It wouldn’t surprise me if they claim he was demonically possessed or something. Sadly, GA has no laws that could hold his parents accountable in any way for giving him access to a weapon.

People who are staunch 2A supporters - the kind who want zero common sense gun safety laws - are fond of saying it’s never them who turn out to be shooters. But in at least 4 cases, it’s their kids. The Sandy Hook killer’s mom was an avid shooter and gun collector, the kid who shot the parishioners in Charleston came from a gun-loving family IIRC, the kid who tried to kill Trump came from a gun-loving family and this kid seems to have as well. Easy access and a pro-gun mindset.

Also the kid in Michigan who's parents bought him the gun. They we're tried and found guilty because they have a law they made a couple of years ago for this.

So maddening. The shooter had threatened violence a year ago.

The onion posts this after every mass shooting. Sad a satirical publication makes more sense than a large amount of politicians.

Sources tell CNN that the shooter's father bought the AR-type gun as a holiday gift for his son AFTER the Jackson County sheriff's office talked to him about the online rumors.

This is Michigan all over again. :frack:
