Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

This Peice of work can't stop trying to extort and ally at war who was attacked and whose citizens are being murdered by an authoritarian madman. He's the worst frenemy ever.

They arent even trying to hide the extortion. They are completely transparent with it.

Mind you, once we were to "get control" wanna guess who we would "partner with" regarding the sharing of energy?

    its insanity.

Meanwhile, Ukraine this evening is under drone/cruise missile attack AGAIN ( around 200 tonight ) after Putin agreed to no infrastructure /energy targets.

    So residential is perfectly ok.

i live in a bizarro world.

I marvel at some of these sci fi writers from the 60s/70s etc that, at the time, created some really fanciful stories/plots.

I never understood, til i got much older, the question- Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?

I still cant get Ian Flemmings Moonraker villain, Drax, out of my head for how closely it is to Musk.

A made up villain- millionaire, nazi sympathizer who builds rockets.

IF Musk turns out to be a Soviet agent, Ian Flemming becomes Nostradamus II

    Ukraine rejected.

We all knew this was coming.

Admin keeps saying "deal signed" to put pressure (publicly) on Ukraine and it ain't working.

This is just disgusting. Trying to strongarm this sovereign country who is being invaded by a much larger country(ruled my a murderous dictator).

Trump is just doing exactly what Putin wants. Whoever can't see that is blind. The news out of Washington somehow still gets worse on a daily basis. Will we ever hit bottom?

Trump is a bully - one of a special subset of bullies who only punch down. His kind of bully is weak, feckless and a coward. Putin knows this and now the rest of the world knows this also. The US is much weaker now than before he was elected.

More public pressure- Trump is transparent as hell if you pay attention.

There is no mineral deal agreement, never was. Now Trump framing as there IS and Zelensky now wants to renegotiate. So as not to appear as a complete FAILURE at negotiations. Since the original tactic of strongarming didnt work.

Yeah, you can't back out of a deal you weren't party to, unless you're Trump I suppose. Lol.

Wait a minute... Trump's pissed... at Putin? GTFOH...

He’ll back down. Putin is seeing how much rope he can give Trump before he hangs himself.
