I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

Yeah, well, the defense gets their turn tomorrow, I think. As compelling as that all was today, and I have no doubt in my mind how I'd vote, I think there are some things the defense could point to that will make guilt and conviction more difficult to be proven. I'm going to be paying a lot more attention to what the Senators are actually going to say before the vote takes place, after all, they're the ones actually deciding the case.

    What are you thinking, specifically?

That last presentation by a trial manager was beyond sobering, I only caught the last 20 min or so, but it was harrowing to see what the officers dealt with and just how close the mob came to reaching the senators. Officer Goodman also narrowly saved Romney from the mob...

The facts of the case don't really matter, the Republicans are just going to say "we don't think this is constitutional", vote no on conviction, and carry on with their lives. This was over with the "constitutionality" vote.

I agree. The house managers are making this case for the American people just as much as for the senators. Especially the ones that got name-dropped. Footage of an insurrectionist saying "Ted Cruz is one of us" is powerful.

The House Managers are also making the case that the constitutionality question is settled and may not be used to acquit. The vote yesterday affirmed that the trial is constitutional. If I am remembering correctly. Lead guy said it early today.

You know that was done on purpose and I'm glad they did it.

I'm guessing they're gonna play his protest peacefully quip, and point out that the fight like hell comments were not meant literally, and that Trump never told anyone specifically to break into the Capitol, and that he could not have foreseen that people would actually literally bust through the windows and breach the Capitol building.

I don't buy any of those excuses, but to some fence-sitters, this might be enough to not convict.

I think the Senators themselves might be able to convince a few more to convict, but that's a tall order. The only way a conviction happens is if McConnell makes a legitimate push to get it done.

I hope those sobering videos have the effect of making other Senators reconsider their position.

Apparently the Trump defense team intends to paint today's presentation as glorifying violence. I don't know how you can pull that off without admitting that Trump was making a call for violence.

This is one thing I thought the house managers were smart to focus on. That argument is already dead to anyone that still has an open mind. Putting the timestamped tweets next to the video from the same time was a great move.
