I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

Its like the last 15 min of each Apprentice episode.

And once you read that, its clear who currently has control in the US Government. Looks like Trump is attempting to reign back in some of that, but as the article states at the end, lets see how long this arrangement lasts.
I be still can’t believe we’re only a few years removed from Musk doing guest spots on South Park and Rick and Morty.
    Now, he’s a supervillain.

MAGA families suck so much. These people's hatred is so much they can't even have compassion for their own family caught in a needlessly terrible situation.

    ===================
NEW YORK (AP) — Scrambling to replace their health insurance and to find new work, some laid-off federal workers are running into another unexpected unpleasantry: Relatives cheering their firing.

The country’s bitterly tribal politics are spilling into text chains, social media posts and heated conversations as Americans absorb the reality of cost-cutting measures directed by President Donald Trump and carried out by billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Expecting sympathy, some axed workers are finding family and friends who instead are steadfast in their support of what they see as a bloated government’s waste.

“I’ve been treated as a public enemy by the government and now it’s bleeding into my own family,” says 24-year-old Luke Tobin, who was fired last month from his job as a technician with the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho’s Nez Perce National Forest.

Tobin’s job loss sent him scurrying to fill prescriptions before he lost his health insurance and filling out dozens of applications to find whatever work he can, even if it’s at a fast-food restaurant. But some relatives reacting to his firing as “what has to happen to make the government great again” has been one of the worst parts of the entire ordeal.

“They can’t separate their ideology and their politics from supporting their own family and their own loved ones,” says Tobin.

Kristin Jenn got a similar response from members of her family after she learned the National Park Service ranger job she was due to start had been put on hold by the DOGE hiring freeze. She thinks it’s likely the job will be eliminated altogether.

As she has expressed her disappointment over potentially losing her dream job, some members of her mostly conservative family have unfriended her on social media. Others are giving her the silent treatment. Nearly all favor such cuts even if she’s a victim of them.

OK, in that case fork the MAGAt family members. They understand not a damn thing until it impacts themselves directly.

    Wow

Her own mother, that is devastating

We’ll see if the mother feels the same way if her health insurance and/or social security is cut

And if some point in the future roles reverse you’re back on your feet and doing well and the relative loses their job I wouldn’t feel bad at some petty payback

They would willingly cut their nose off to spite their face, or to show their loyalty to Trump, so I'm not even sure it would matter if it happens to them directly. They'll say something like "it's God's (Trump's) will." Classic cult behavior.

    Yeah, you’re probably right.

These hacks and their “God’s will” bullschlitz are no better than extremists screeching “Inshallah”.

Snippet from the article that is telling, IMO, bolding is mine.

“Mr. Musk was unimpressed. He told Mr. Rubio he was “good on TV,” with the clear subtext being that he was not good for much else. Throughout all of this, the president sat back in his chair, arms folded, as if he were watching a tennis match.

After the argument dragged on for an uncomfortable time, Mr. Trump finally intervened to defend Mr. Rubio as doing a “great job.” Mr. Rubio has a lot to deal with, the president said. He is very busy, he is always traveling and on TV, and he has an agency to run. So everyone just needs to work together.”

Trump loves to see people under him fight with each other, according to what I have read from people who have worked for him. He almost encourages it, it gives him pleasure. So when Musk raises his voice and berates the Secretary of State publicly, and Rubio gets heated back, he LOVES it.

Couple of comments from Nixon, he tells how little Rubio is trusted by Trump, and says it’s obvious that the story came from Rubio.

Dood, this sounds exactly like Trump on his TV show, The Apprentice. I know because I watched that show quite a bit. Pitting people against one another and watching them fight over who's better or who can impress him more happened every single show.

Musk’s little minions are living in government buildings. They have installed IKEA beds and furniture, made an area suitable for childcare and are being paid six figure salaries according to articles I have read. Now they need a laundromat apparently.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative has gained accessed to a sensitive child support database, over the objections of career civil servants.

The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to The Washington Post that DOGE officials have “read-only” access to the Administration for Children and Families-run Federal Parent Locator System, which contains income and federal benefits data for nearly every U.S. worker.

“ACF supports DOGE’s efforts to improve efficiency and data quality to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in federal programs,” an official at the department told the paper. “ACF will continue to assist DOGE in efforts to strengthen the programs it runs.”

It was previously reported that career staff members objected to DOGE accessing the data, a pool of sensitive information protected with the same federal privacy laws as Internal Revenue Service tax records.

The group is likely scrutinizing the records as part of its larger efforts to find duplicative or otherwise problematic government payments.……

Start reading at paragraph 9. This is a total shirt show what they are doing at Social Security.

Basically, DOGE has insisted that their people have remote access to all the most sensitive information housed in various Social Security databases. They have basically shorted the proper training anyone would need to learn how to interpret these databases, which has led to all the false claims of fraud. They wouldn’t wait for proper training, but insisted their operatives be given full access without it.

They have ignored safety measures that have been scrupulously followed for decades. Their “read-only” access allows them to copy the personal data of nearly every person in the US. They are accessing this data in what the SSA considers unsecured locations, where unknown people can also be viewing the data.

Please note the hypocrisy of insisting that all federal employees must return to office, but DOGE can access systems remotely from their enclave where they are living in a federal office building.
