Today it begins, Kamala has reached the point that she's the Democratic Party nominee:

There's video from today. this link has video from her first public appearance since Biden endorsed her:

She spent yesterday on the telephone for most of the day. I read that yesterday that she called the party leaders in all 50 states. That would take me three days.

She's renamed her YouTube channel, that's the where to go for video: https://www.youtube.com/@kamalaharris

This is her video on her channel from two hours ago:

To play it, start it, and then move it up to 5:47. This was one of those live videos which don't start at zero.

I've named this thread General Election 2024 Harris vs Trump

Trump needs an introduction post as well, a MAGA suporter ought to write it: @Farb, @SaintForLife , @Others, calling for someone to please introduce your GOP candidate for this 2024 general election thread.

Two decades ago, an American country singer called Natalie Maines touched off a firestorm in London.

Her band, then called the Dixie Chicks, was there on a world tour as the US was beginning the invasion of Iraq.

As she and her bandmates began the song Travelin’ Soldier at Shepherd’s Bush Theatre, Maines told the crowd: “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

The response was swift and brutal. Country music stations stopped playing their music. The hate mail flowed in from all corners of America, and the band lost promotional opportunities and sponsorship deals.

The “cancellation” of the Dixie Chicks was part of an atmosphere of hyper-patriotism that Republicans had successfully willed into existence around Bush and the Iraq invasion in the wake of the September 11 2001 terror attacks.

The GOP used the aftermath of those devastating events to redefine patriotism as a jingoistic, nationalistic virtue that required being a conservative Republican to be considered a “real” American. Bush used those feelings to win re-election, and Republicans have spent the last 20 years claiming that Democrats “hate America.”

The hyper-performative patriotism remained part-and-parcel of the GOP throughout the rise of Donald Trump and his presidency, leading Trump to claim “America First” as an alternative moniker for his “Make America Great Again” movement.

His supporters continued to claim the American flag as their own symbol, even using it to beat police officers as they sought to illegally keep Trump in office on January 6 2021.

But after this year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, it’s clear that Democrats are dead set on making sure those tricks won’t work anymore.

For four days, American flags and other patriotic symbols were easy to spot at the United Center, and on each day of the convention chants of “USA, USA” echoed through the arena as speaker after speaker praised America’s virtues and extolled the importance of “freedom.”……..

It’s a sign that Democrats are finally ready to stop worrying about Republicans claiming they lack of patriotism and instead reclaim patriotism as their own, uniquely Democratic virtue.…….

I will say that Harris has impressed me as someone willing to work with people - not an ideological purist who won’t compromise. That may be Biden’s influence, idk. But she comes across as pragmatic, unwilling to burn everything down over a principle, which is exactly what we need in these times where we are so divided. Someone has to be the adult - it certainly isn’t the GOP right now. But, being the adult means hard choices and being willing to change your stance to make the larger goal attainable.

She's cut from the same cloth as Biden. Obama/Clinton are orators with a gravitational pull. Bernie is policy/ideological leader. Bush Jr/Hillary are political royalty. Not a foreign/military policy person like Bush Sr. Both Biden and Harris are pragmatic, wait for the wind to blow, politicians. She has said the some of the same things verboten as Biden in 2020; it's just a new messenger.

Trump is playing golf today while Vance is campaigning. I think Trump only has one campaign event scheduled in the next week - in Montana of all places. It’s a bit odd.

There are rumors that he is going to drop out - because he will refuse to lose another election. I’m not sure what that does to the ticket - do they just have to roll with Vance then, and he picks a new VP?

I don’t think Trump will drop out - unless he is also prepared to flee the country. He can still make money during the campaign. But I do know he won’t care what happens to the GOP because of him dropping out.
Does hanging out at donut shops really count as "campaigning?"

One of the most pressing issues confronting the next Congress and administration will be how to deal with the expiration of the 2017 Trump tax cuts — and, more specifically, who will pay for the cost of extending some or all of those cuts.

One of the more widely accepted ideas circulating on the right is to raise income taxes on single parents, more than 80 percent of whom are women and a disproportionate share of whom are people of color. The idea has been lauded by prominent think tanks, Project 2025, U.S. senators and, in his 2016 presidential campaign, by Donald Trump himself.

Single parents might seem to be an odd target for higher tax bills. They are far more likely to face financial precarity than other households as they confront the dual challenge of caregiving and providing for their families. Raising this group’s taxes to pay for tax cuts directed largely toward upper-income Americans, the vast majority of whom are married couples, would exacerbate the negative economic, educational and health effects of financial insecurity on children.

But among a large segment of the right, single parenthood is seen as an immoral family structure. If life can be made more difficult and expensive for single parents, the thinking apparently goes, more parents will choose to get married or stay married for financial reasons, regardless of whether their marriages are fostering home environments that are healthy and safe for the children and the parents.

Vice presidential nominee JD Vance displayed this attitude, for example, when he controversially complained in 2021 that the “sexual revolution” had made divorces too easy to get. He said many divorces “really didn’t work out for the kids of those marriages,” even if in some cases the relationships being dissolved were “unhappy” or “even violent” like that of his grandparents.

As the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 explains, “It’s time for policymakers to elevate family authority, formation, and cohesion as their top priority and even use government power, including through the tax code, to restore the American family.”

The most prominent tax policy idea for punishing single parenthood is to eliminate the “head of household” filing status, which offers tailored tax brackets and deductions that recognize the financial challenges faced by single parents. In 2016, then-presidential candidate Trump proposed ending the head of household status as part of a massive $6 trillion tax cut plan that would have actually raised taxes for most single parents with dependent children.

Although Trump’s current campaign platform does not contain the same level of detail as his 2016 proposal, interest in this idea has not waned on the right. The Tax Foundation, for instance, includes eliminating head of household tax brackets and standard deductions in both of its proposals to pay for the continuation of top-heavy tax cuts that Trump signed in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act...............

They really are content to see the rest of us starve in order to give more to billionaires.

MeidasTouch uncovered some information about Bryant Rosado, the “undecided” voter who then announced he will be voting for Trump.

“MeidasTouch didn't locate any posts of Rosado indicating support for Kamala Harris or Democrats, but did uncover many pro-Trump and MAGA Republican related posts. Let's take a look.”

LOL I LITERALLY JUST POSTED IT HAHA

Sooooo anyone catch this "undecided" last night post DNC?

    Wellllll .....he isnt exactly "undecided"

Shame on you CNN for not doing any due diligence

I was just reading that. Not surprising at all. I don’t think there is much truly undecided that Trump can win over. I think for that part of the electorate, it’s going to come down to a decision to either vote for Harris or vote other / or abstain.

His polling hasn't changed since Aug 1. He looks to be capped out at 43-44 on most polling sites. RFK Jr. removing himself from swing states may change that significantly. Trump could pick up 2-3%. The pollsters have to start running new polls for head-to-head and Harris/Trump/West/Stein.

Also, West and Stein not pulling out of swing states is a disservice. They are GOP backed with petitions at Trump campaign stops and GOP consultants/money.

It is a shame because West is not even actively campaigning. Just whatever they can do to steal votes. West ought to do the right thing and drop out. Stein is just a loon.

As for Stein - you spelled Russian asset wrong, lol.

Apparently Fox hosts had to boot Trump off the phone last night, after which he immediately called NewsMax to continue complaining about Harris. Then I read a rumor that Trump tried to call in to Fox all morning, and they didn’t put him on air.

Now - he is speaking in NV and both networks cut away mid-speech:

This is such a good summary of the wealth distribution that I have to post. It puts into perspective how massive the inequality is. And we still advocate more tax breaks for the mega rich? There won't be investment if there aren't returns. Otherwise, they'll just move it abroad to where there will be or at the very least park their wealth somewhere safe. It is no surprise that those community with the well educated have the more concentrated investment. Sf, Irvine, austin, Boston.

As an example of conservative rule: the UK.

There are more in that article.

So why the low growth?? Low productivity due to low investment.

I apologize. I meant only to highlight that video that I saw and got carried away. tl;dr of it, smart investment into the country via higher taxation on the mega rich.

It's uncanny that the wealthiest people in this chart are in what graphically looks like skyscrapers, the modern castles, with the rest of us mere serfs left to fend for ourselves from the meager scraps they toss to us. Let them eat cake indeed.

CNN knew. They don't just randomly grab people off the street. These segments are like everything else, they are designed to get maximum revenue through maximum attention and stories like this gets them maximum attention.

I think they are trying to keep Trump off the air to help Trump. The more exposure they give Trump, the more it hurts Trump.

Before he called NewsMax, he called the host of the show that came on Fox after they booted him from the convention coverage... he called the guy's personal cell phone.
