    Washington (CNN) —
An FBI official is under criminal investigation after allegedly altering a document related to 2016 surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, several people briefed on the matter told CNN.

The possibility of a substantive change to an investigative document is likely to fuel accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that the FBI committed wrongdoing in its investigation of connections between Russian election meddling and the Trump campaign.

The finding is expected to be part of Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz's review of the FBI's effort to obtain warrants under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act on Carter Page, a former Trump campaign aide. Horowitz will release the report next month.

Horowitz turned over evidence on the allegedly altered document to John Durham, the federal prosecutor appointed early this year by Attorney General William Barr to conduct a broad investigation of intelligence gathered for the Russia probe by the CIA and other agencies, including the FBI. The altered document is also at least one focus of Durham's criminal probe.

Terrible if true. Trump will obviously seize upon this.

Here's my question in regards to all of this...

The report mentions, apparently, numerous inaccuracies and failures in the FISA applications. Did the IG ever make a determination as to whether or not those issues made the applications illegal, or that the warrants would not have been issued had the proper procedures have been followed?

He didn't find anything was illegal and thats actually the scary part about it all. It shows how easily the FISA process can be abused due to incompetence, corruption, bias, or whatever you want to call it. There needs to be some serious reforms.

McCabe and the IG report both said they wouldn't have gotten the FISA warrant without the Steele Dossier. It's crazy how something so flimsy was used to abuse the FISA system and create a 2 year long narrative that proved to be totally inaccurate.

    Wow,

I figured after all this you guys would have no straws left to grasp!

Yes people are doing real time for this.

People so close to trump they just did not have his name!

Come on this is a friggin joke.

The only reason old Carter Page is not doing time is because of the paperwork. Oh and he used the fifth rather than talk to SSCI.

    so keep grasping at straws.
It appears that you aren't up to date on Carter Page. The IG Report showed that not one of the accusations against Page turned out to be true.

The FISA system needs applicants who aren't lying.

The Crossfire Hurricane investigation was opened on remarkably thin predication. A conversation between a low level Trump campaign official and an Australian Government official resulted in what is termed as a "suggestion" that the Trump campaign had received a suggested offer of help from Russia.

If one has complete faith in the integrity of the FBI, opening an investigation on such thin gruel could be acceptable.

However, we know that competence and integrity seemed to be in short supply in Comey's FBI so maybe the predication requirements need a serious examination so that future presidential candidates aren't subjected to years of investigation predicated on what was allegedly said in a bar.

In order to surveil the Trump campaign, the FBI falsified an application to open up the most intrusive investigatory tools in the box and continued to falsify and exclude to keep the investigation going.

Trump may be engaged in hyperbole but he isn't wrong.

There were no FISAs on any member of the Trump campaign, ever. The FBI didn’t “spy” on the Trump campaign.

The FISA on Page was only applied for after he left the campaign. It was authorized to be renewed several times by that rabid leftist Rod Rosenstein. The FBI investigation was opened two weeks before the FBI even knew the Steele dossier existed.

There was no “deep state” conspiracy against Trump, good lord you people are ridiculous. The FBI skews heavily Republican, then and now, even up to and including Comey. Comey had no real problem with Trump until after the election when Trump started acting all, well, Trumpy, and demanding a pledge of loyalty from Comey.

During the campaign, Comey made sure nobody found out the Trump campaign was suspected of anything untoward, and then he broke FBI rules to smear Clinton with an announcement just days before the election that turned out to be absolutely nothing.

This narrative is sheer madness. It’s far far worse than anything you guys have ragged on the left about. It’s utter nonsense.

I would not be surprised if we find out Carter Page was working with the CIA and the FBI’s external vetting process failed.

We still don’t know much about the counter intelligence investigation that was going on at the time.

Well, everything else I said is a fact, that part is opinion. But honestly, do you not see how you are doing exactly, and I do mean exactly what you railed at the left for doing about the Mueller investigation?

    It‘s amazing, actually.

It's been reported that he was a CIA informant for 5 years in good standing, but the FBI withheld that from the FISA court.

I do know that not one question was answered by Carter Page when the Senate intelligence committee wanted to talk to him he plead the 5th.

I do know he was interviewed by the FBI before the Mueller investigation for like 10 hours and was never interviewed by the Mueller investigation.

I do know he was in heavy contact with Russian energy guys with ties to putie. Kinda just like everyone else doing time now.

I know he didn't get caught doing anything and if he was it would have been caught with the wire taps I guess.

I would like to think a naval academy grad, ex house arms services committee employee, and a naval intelligence officer assigned to the UN would not be up to super shady stuff with Russian oligarchs but he definitely was up to some questionable stuff.

Has anyone here that is pushing the current conspiracy theory considered that the President is currently labeling FBI agents as “scum” to cheers at his “election” rallies? Is there anything that troubles you there? Any frame of historical reference you’d care to make?

That his AG is using the same sort of inflammatory talk, just couched in softer terms, and misrepresenting the facts of the case by citing the FISA warrants on Carter Page as evidence of spying on the campaign? He knows better.

Do any of you see the irony of Barr waxing indignant about the fact that the US government in the form of the FBI dared to decide to investigate the Trump campaign after having troubling information brought to them while AT THE SAME TIME the president is doing everything under his power, using the official trappings of the US government as well as his deputizing his personal lawyer to operate as a shadow SOS, to get a foreign nation to open an investigation into a US political opponent of the POTUS? And that same AG, when the president’s improper behavior and his personal lawyer’s improper behavior was referred to the DOJ, said no, there’s nothing worth investigating there?

And some of you have said, without a trace of irony or self awareness it seems, that the left is trying to perpetrate a new age of McCarthyism? Bill Barr is a direct descendent of Roy Cohn in all sorts of ways.

Trump's mentor was Roy Cohn. Project McCarthyism when you are using McCarthyism tactics.

Getting Trump is not worth destroying the country.

The IG report paints a picture of a law enforcement agency that should infuriate and scare every American.

Yet, since Trump is the target, you are good with it.

You lost 2016. Move on. Learn from mistakes. Present candidates and platforms that win elections instead of blaming the loss on the election process.

My hope is that the 2020 election results are such that the Democrats will be forced to learn from their mistakes, but so far they just keep doubling down on them.

THe idea that people seem ok with the underhanded crooked and possibly illegal activities of a candidate is what scares me. The oversight by congress for Obama was insane and he took it on the chin and let the process work out. Now when the Dems perform oversight it is not accepting the results of 2016. Trump was literally found guilty of STEALING 2 million dollars from charity and no one says jack. All I heard is how the Clinton foundation is their personal slush fund even though all reports show that the Clinton foundation does a huge amount of good with their initiatives.

Your guy does no wrong. Just say that. You won't believe any evidence to the contrary and with the exception of a few people, there seems to be no budging on that belief.

    Trump is destroying the country.

You obviously don't have to agree with the above sentiment, but many of us believe it to be true. From our point of view, leaving Trump in office is not an acceptable outcome.

    Really?

I don't know I feel pretty good the the FBI was looking into a guy that worked in naval intelligence that was completely aligned with the Russian energy companies.

Completely up their arse especially since the us had sanctions on Russia.

    How does that scare you?

Can we get some proof and links showing that Trump is destroying the country?
