Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

“I do believe that Elon proved to be very disappointing on the free speech issue,” Taibbi said during an appearance on NewsNation’s “Cuomo” Friday. “All of us who worked on the Twitter Files felt the same way. We went in feeling tremendously optimistic that he actually meant a lot of the things that he said about being in favor of all legal speech and, being a free speech absolutist and all these other things.”

“That proved not to be the case. He’s currently disenfranchising thousands of Substack writers, including including me. And no one seems to care in the press,” Taibbi told host Chris Cuomo.

At least he acknowledges that Musk was full of shirt.

But only because Musk is hurting him personally. He didn’t care about all the people who were being harassed and defamed until Musk did something to substack.

Yeah.. people have a problem admitting they were wrong or were duped.. especially when they view Musk as on the same side as themselves.

Really though.. most of them were just full of shirt like Musk.. they didn't really give much of a fork about Twitter and free speech, they just wanted to be the ones in control of it

Same thing is going to happen with TikTok.

I watched the whole video. It went by a lot faster than I thought it would.

If Elon is a visionary genius, then my father is an omniscient being. They both say and believe crap they haven't thought through then engage in circular reasoning and taking personal jabs at people who dare to ask questions they don't have answers for, because they haven't given any real thought to what they believe and say.

Don let Elon off easy or Don's not very good at nailing people down when they spout BS. One specific illustration of that on the issue of content regulation on Twitter.
    • Don shows Elon examples of hateful posts about Jewish people and asks why he allows it on Twitter.
    • Elon says he won't censor anything not illegal and those hateful posts are not illegal.
    • Don says, but it violates Twitter's policies that ban hate speech.
    • Elon basically says "but no one saw it" and it's not illegal and I don't censor anything that's not illegal.
    • Don doesn't point out that having print outs of the posts proves people saw the posts. Instead, Don asks if Elon thinks this is hate speech and if he feels a personal responsibility to remove it from the platform he owns.
    • Elon says no, I only feel obligated to follow the law and will not censor content that is not illegal. Elon then makes a crack at Don about how he knows Don is pro censorship and he is not.
    • Don doesn't point out that Twitter does in fact have censorship policies in place censoring legal content, like their policy against allowing hate speech. Twitter's policies also censor other type of speech which are legal, so Elon is a lying hypocrit. Don did not point that out.
Every issue they covered, Elon was making up BS and lying. Elon even lied after the interview about what offended him in the interview.

Elon alluded to the ketamine question. The ketamine subject came up in the first half of the interview and Elon didn't seem particularly bothered by it and explained why he had previously mentioned it on Twitter.

The question that triggered Elon came near the very end when they were talking about advertisers that pulled their ads from Twitter. While Elon was doing more of his rhetorical rope a dope on the issue, Don told Elon he was surprised that Elon said that if Twitter fails it will be the advertisers fault.

This is not verbatim which is why it's not in quotes. Don then politely asks Elon that if Twitter fails, doesn't the buck stop with him because he owns it and is charge of it. Don added, don't you think the buck stops with Biden, because he's president? Why is it different for you?

Elon physically froze, even his eyes weren't jittering about like they normally do. That's the moment Elon decided to cancel Don's contract, because Don did the worst thing you can do to a toxic narcissist, con man. Don called Elon out for being solely responsible for anything that fails while under his control.

This is another area of hypocrisy for Elon. He repeatedly said that minorities, women and people who are transgender need to forget about the inequality they suffer and move on, the basic "stop being a victim" BS. Elon has no problem painting himself as a victim of advertisers, conventional media or government regulators. He's all in on playing the victim card we he seems himself as a victim. Elon just doesn't like it when other people who are legitimately victimized speak up and out against their victimization.

I have a friend who highly respects Elon and thinks he's a visionary genius for knowing humans are doomed on Earth and being the one person that's going to lead people to salvation somewhere else. I keep telling her, the second Elon leaves the planet is the second that the future of Earth will get a lot brighter. I usually throw in that I'll be the first in line to pack his bags and load them on his ship.

There's no law against discovering and disclosing the identity of an anonymous cartoonist, yet Elon says he only censors what's illegal.

An anonymous cartoonist is withholding information from the public, yet Elon says he wants all information disclosed and no information suppressed.

Elon is dishonest and doesn't care about free speech for all. He's using the lie of being a free speech advocate as cover for allowing fascists to spread their lies and hate to sway the public, because he either agrees with them or thinks he can benefit from them.

On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer dismissed the suit, writing in his order that it was “unabashedly and vociferously about one thing” — punishing the nonprofit for its speech.

I love that the judge saw right through him.

I read that Elon has been community noted so much that he has Twitter delete them now for his account.

The attorney general of Missouri is suing Media Matters, a progressive watchdog group, alleging that it failed to turn over internal documents following its 2023 coverage of hate speech on the social media platform X. The head of the group says news outlets could be the next targets.

“Media Matters has pursued an activist agenda in its attempt to destroy X, because they cannot control it,” the lawsuit said, describing X – formerly known as Twitter – as a “free speech platform” that allows “Missourians to express their own viewpoints in the public square”.

The lawsuit, filed by Missouri’s attorney general, Andrew Bailey, on Monday, marks the second time that GOP officials have taken legal action against Media Matters to support Elon Musk, X’s billionaire owner. In November, the Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton, launched an investigation into Media Matters, describing the group as a “radical anti-free speech organization”.

“These state attorney generals, first Paxton and now Bailey, are directly responding to Musk’s pleas. They are helping him punish critics,” said Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters.

The rush to defend Musk against the organization, a newly anointed enemy of the right, underscores Musk’s rising profile among Republicans as a free-speech crusader. Carusone worries that the GOP’s embrace of Musk will help the billionaire stifle important criticism of X and the rightwing extremism and hate speech that proliferate there.

“Newsrooms are next. There’s no reason to think that state AGs would stop at Media Matters,” Carusone told the Guardian.……..

Musk’s decision to roll back content moderation on X was widely praised by rightwing leaders, including Donald Trump. Now, those same rightwing allies are helping Musk silence X’s critics.

Carusone said it should be “alarming for everybody, especially the media”, that two state attorney general’s offices appear eager to become a personal injury law firm for a tech billionaire. Bailey’s lawsuit lays out a blueprint for punishing newsrooms that dare print negative stories about X or Musk, Carusone warned.

“If you’re a newsroom, especially a resource-starved one, you have to start making decisions: is it worth it to write this one piece on Elon and X if it means that you’ll be stuck in a million-dollar legal battle?” said Carusone. “Most newsrooms do not have the resources to pay legal fees to fight Elon Musk, especially now that state AGs are stepping in.”……..
