So, Farb, I’m not seeing where kids will miss a year longer?

    https://www.usnews.com/news/top-new...e-in-person-classes-over-covid-19-safety-plan

"Similar labor disputes have unfolded across the U.S., pitting teacher unions against district officials over plans to reopen, almost a year after the virus shut down schools for 50 million students nationwide."

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chicago-schools-teachers-union-approve-reopening-deal/
"Chicago's teachers have approved a COVID-19 safety deal that paves the way for students to begin returning to classrooms after almost a year away. The vote appears to end a long and often bitter dispute between their union on one side and Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the nation's third-largest public school system on the other."

What is that saying again, 'you can lead a horse to water but something or another'?

okay, I misread it as saying they would miss a year longer, not that they had already missed a year or longer. One word, lol.

Is it good news that they will be back by the end of April? Or is it Biden’s fault that they missed a full year? I’m still not seeing how this is a valid criticism of Biden.

So I read an article about this TJ Ducklo guy the other day and it turns out he's been a huge part of Biden's campaign and one of the most important people behind getting him elected - if you believe the people quoted in the article. I'm sure this won't be the last we see or hear from this guy, especially since he held himself accountable and resigned since what he did wasn't up to the Biden White House standards which he was part of crafting. He's apparently a really intelligent, hard working, deep thinking person who is able to put his thoughts together in a way that sells those he's trying to sell on those thoughts and ideas.

At least he's young and didn't have to be forced out kicking and screaming while trying to take others down with him. Since he didn't, I think we are going to see more of him either in future campaigns or maybe as a candidate himself. We need more really smart, driven, imaginative people involved in government to stave off the polar opposite coming from the American Trump Party.

Either that or he'll start writing books. No matter what he does, I just have a feeling this guy will be successful from what I read about him.

You’re describing trade school and what you say is fine for trade school - or even CCs that do a partnership with local businesses to provide training
But it’s a losing proposition to link college education to ‘career’
We’re about to venture into the most dynamic, unpredictable labor market ever
Tying education to careers that might be obsolete in 10 years makes no sense
If the community college classes are the bases of an undergraduate degree that can support a living, then that would satisfy my condition of assuring the schooling leads to earnings. If we're going to pay for it, it should improve our economy. Some may be willing to pay for some abstract value to society, but I would want to see tangible evidence. No one knows what will be obsolete, but people should go to school to improve their standard of living, rather to become better people. Education should be linked to the jobs we need today, not some unknown future. People can go back to school for another 2 years for free if their jobs become obsolete.

Aside from the obvious issue of who gets to value what- the problem with your solution is that the last 20-30 years has demonstrated very clearly that industry is not in the business of creating jobs
To implement your system, businesses are oils have to guarantee jobs will be there

hows that working in the coal, steel, auto industries?

Well paying for 2 years of random education without accountability of its value will lead to waste. People currently self correct for value if they have to pay for it. Without accountability, it will become an extension of high school which everyone will have to get for even menial jobs. It may be hard to implement, but free stuff has to have accountability. There is no accountability for high school degrees, and if we don’t implement accountability, the value will be depressed for everyone.

    https://news.yahoo.com/biden-says-minority-communities-dont-112609770.html (video)

“The other portion is a lot of people don’t know how to register,” Biden said. “Not everybody in the community, in the Hispanic and the African-American community, particularly in rural areas that are distant and/or inner city districts, know how to use … know how to get online to determine how to get in line for that COVID vaccination at the Walgreens or at the particular store.”

I have heard this several times in the past and I have not seen any evidence that this is true. Are rural poorer people too dumb to figure this out? If a rural American cant figure out how to get on-line, how do they get prescriptions filled, register to vote?
Is the vaccine information only available online?
To me, this is just more of the bigotry of low expectations

Can you expound on the bigotry of low expectations? I’ve not heard that before.

its possible that rural poorer folks dont have computer/internet.

Maybe a trip to the rural areas where you live you can verify for yourself? ( that is if you want to actually verify what you hear )

Prescriptions are automatic - or you simply call your physician or pharmacy to have them filled. Voter registration comes in the form of a card ( in the mail- least it did back in the day ) or they end up at a mass voter registration drive where folks do the leg work for them.

But yes, if you dont have daily access to a computer to continually check the website every day, you can be left out of the registration process and then have to wait for supplies to replenish.

My mom has been in this "queue" now since 25 Jan. Still no shot. We have registered at 2 diff locations only to be told " we will call you". Still no call.

My wife has a lot of rural family. Some are fine, some she often has to get online and figure stuff out for. Not just vaccine either, things like a tutor for her niece (I actually did that), research on treatments when her sister had cancer, etc.

It’s also about access. None of her family have decent access in Monticello, Mississippi or Gravette, Arkansas. There’s no high speed running to either location. A lot of times they call her to look up stuff because their connection is too slow. When I visit I can’t work from either place and for me that’s just email and Zoom.

so an update - Oschner website for Feb 15 says " we are now scheduling first dose appts...limited numbers...
    "

So i call- after 10 min of prompts, i get a live person who says " yeah thats wrong...we are not because we havent received a shipment"

So i ask " should i skip the site and call" - her answer " Yes dont rely on the website- call us for availability"

So obviously whomever running the website is not doing so on a daily basis to track with real-time experiences.

It has more to do with exposure to things than intelligence. I think Biden's answer there is probably an oversimplification of the reasons behind the disparity, however to the particular point I would think it's still true in 2021 that city folk as a whole would be more adept at working with technology than country folk as a whole. Obviously there are exceptions at an individual level, but I don't see how that wouldn't still be true today.

your cost benefit analysis is cast way too narrowly
consider pre-K vs prisons - you're going to have to pay for one of them
would you say, it's cheaper and better for society to pay for pre-K

now we have both a labor force and an economy that has gotten fairly stagnant - unaffordable but necessary higher education is a major culprit
take away the debt burden (allowing more people to pursue a broader array of interests) and the labor force gets more dynamic and economy revs up

when i went to grad school, physical therapy was the hot new field - so naturally everyone signed up for PT school
    and the obvious thing happened

Can you expound on the bigotry of low expectations? I’ve not heard that before.
I think it was coined by Bush, not positive on that, about his education plans (again, not positive).
It is the belief that certain groups or certain people cant live up the expectations of society for whatever reason. Sets up excuses to fail or excuses for a certain behavior. Its bigotry disguised as empathy or sympathy.

Just to provide some clarity to several, I know several people that cannot have internet access because of where they live being too remote. The cost and unreliability of satellite internet is also a detriment.

My elderly parents have internet but might as well not (only used for netflix). They received their vaccinations by using phone to set appointments, as I see some people on here are recommending. The information is available, how one choses to access it is on them.

    Bush 2
The whole phrase is the ‘soft bigotry of low expectations’
He actually delivered it at the NAACP and it kicked off his No Child Left Behind- surprisingly they found that just raising expectations did not fix structural problems

It’s actually a deft phrase - sort of like compassionate conservative- that winds up being a contronym (of a sorts)
