Why would oil companies spend capital on building new refineries or drilling rights when there is a not so silent push to move to electric by the government? Out of one side of there mouth, the government is telling us that big oil is full of greed and is responsible for this but out of the other side tell us that big oil is going to kill everyone so we must, as a nation and with the bank roll of the nation crush big oil so we can move to green energy, despite the technology not being there yet.
That’s pretty much what I wrote. However, while there is some government push for this, I believe it is more of an industry move. People want electric cars. So, the auto industry is moving in that direction. The oil & gas industry is reacting to the auto industry and shuttering its refineries. I see more free market influences than anything else. If anything, I would like to see a bigger push from the government to help move this transition along quicker. It would make the move less painful.

I think the free market is doing what it always does, try and predict the market to maximize profit.
The push is coming from the government, not the people. What traction 'electric' was getting is now being washed away due to the price of filling up.

I believe that most Americans, if given the choice, and all things being equal, would choose electric over gasoline. We just have to get to the “all things being equal” point. We are moving in that direction. Honestly, electric moves us in a direction where we are more energy independent. Why wouldn’t we want it?

I also believe the traction of electric cars is enhanced by the high gas prices. I think the desire for more electric cars has been increased.

Last year we were considering buying a new car for my wife, but held off due low inventory from the micro-chip shortages. A year later, we've decided that whenever we do get the next vehicle it will be electric.

We will be buying my wife a new car soon. She has a very short commute. Will probably get an electric for her.

I would agree but like I said the tech is just not there for storage otherwise, we will be using fossil fuel and nuclear to create electricity needed for gas replacement.

You bet demand has increased, just as intended.

Of course we will use some fossil fuels to generate the electricity, but you won’t need nearly as much of it as you need now for almost every car out there. Just because the tech isn’t out there now, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be trying like hell now to get it there.

Do you want to be locked into driving gas cars forever? Do you want foreign wars and foreign nations holding us by the short hairs because there may be a decrease in oil supplies. You are so concerned about some “conspiracy” to get you to drive electric cars, you will vote against your own interest.

As of right now, electric cars currently work for some people. My wife, for instance, has a short drive to and from work. An electric car is perfect for her. My next car will likely be a hybrid. I drive my cars until they die.

I will agree to that, but I think the 'push' might actually have an opposite effect that intended. When the demand and tech is there, then capitalism will sort it out and electric/hybrid will start to replace gas. Until then, the more pain you inflict on people who can't afford a new electric car, you will lose their vote.
We are about to be a pretty good little recession, so people won't have money to buy new electric cars, much less electric work vehicles.
If we can have gas prices like we did before Biden took office, Yes. I would plan and want to drive gas for my life because I just recently bought a new car and it is gas and I don't plan to every buy another car again.

Gas prices are never going back down to pandemic levels. Quite honestly, it is foolish to think so barring another pandemic level event. I don’t care who is in office. 5 refineries have shut down in the past couple of years and a sixth (Lyondell) in Houston is shutting down next year because no one would buy the plant. Too much money to refurbish and no return on investment. Plus, they are Super Fund sites waiting to happen. Businesses are not reinvesting. Not the government. Businesses. You are trying so hard to make this a “Biden” thing when all of the evidence in the world says it is businesses making business decisions (and correct business decisions). These plants were shutting down during Trump. Why would you think that trend won’t continue no matter who is in office?

My next car will be a hybrid at least. While there may be temporary lowering of prices, I believe the long term outlook for gasoline prices will just continue to rise. If for no other reason, because you will see less, not more, refineries in the future. Some other countries may build some, but I don’t think that is likely, and even if it does happen, you are reliant on foreign gasoline.

I am for anything that will make us more energy independent (including hydrogen-which doesn’t seem to have legs at this point in time).

I don't think Biden will seek reelection. The only problem is the Democratic establishment is going to go with Harris.

Ds will lose in 2024 if Harris gets the nom. She is Hillary 2.0.

    Dem Top 5
    - Biden at 80+ and tanking polls
    - Harris who is Hillary 2.0
    - Pete who will turn off independents
    - Warren at 75+
    - Sanders at 80+

    None of these are electable.

Dems have to go with a sub 60+ candidate like Clinton and Obama that turns out young voters.

Gas was on average $2.60 in January of 2020.

Business read and take their ques from the government. I will bet that when the green new deal folks are out, gas will return to a normal rate.

We were energy independent under Trump, correct?

And yet refineries were closing prior January 2020. The last time oil was selling for this amount, gas prices were in the neighborhood of $3.00-$3.50. Why the difference? There is less gas being refined right now because, I can’t believe I have to say this again, BUSINESSES are shutting down their gas refineries. You can’t sell a gas refinery right now. Ask Lyondell. They have been trying for years.

Businesses do not take their lead from the government. They take their lead from what the consuming public will purchase. Biden can say “buy electric cars everyone, it’s cool.” But if the demand isn’t there, businesses won’t put a freaking dime into it.

How is gas going to return to the past rates if there are fewer plants producing gasoline? You can pump a million gallons of oil a day, but if your max production of gasoline is 100,000 barrels a day, you are only going to get 100,000 barrels of gasoline. Cars don’t run on oil.

Would you build a new factory that made Blue Ray DVD players right now? No. Because the future is not DVD. It is streaming. Same thing with gasoline. Electric is the future.

Business, especially larger corporations don't take their lead from the governing body that does regulates them? Are you sure? That doesn't seem right to me.

The government has said that electric is the future. I just don't think the economy or reality has made that decision just yet. This ridiculous 'putin' price hike is all because the government is trying to cause pain to force a transition not a natural transition.

You are saying the reason for the gas price hike is because the oil companies are not investing in fossil fuel, but Biden and his admin are blaming Putin. Which is it? Both? What happened between pre-pandemic to before Putin invaded? I can think of one.

The reason for the gas increase is for reason I gave. Facts are facts. I don’t care what Biden says or anyone else. I look at facts, not what any team wants me to believe. I am not blinded by politics on this issue. Notice, I haven’t blamed anyone in this whole thread. Just stating facts. The facts lead us to the conclusions. You, on the other hand, are stating opinion (things will be better with Trump), without stating a single fact to support it. What will Trump do to stop the closing of future gasoline refineries for business reasons? You haven’t listed anything other than to suggest drilling more. I’ve shown that will do nothing to increase gasoline production without additional refineries.

Oil prices are high, but not commensurate with the price of gas, as I showed above. You may be able to drive down the price of gas some with lower oil prices, but it won’t go down a far as you want. In the long term, it will continue to increase as plant after plant closes.

If businesses took their lead from the government, as you suggest, the oil companies would be drilling the hell out of those 9,000 open leases. The government is begging them to right now. However, to do so would require capital investment by the oil companies. An investment they are not willing to make because (repeat after me)…..no long term return on investment.

You want this so bad to be a political issue that you are refusing to see the basic economic forces at work. This is free enterprise.
