And yes, it is a badge of honor. Anyone - and I mean anyone - who dared to speak out against Dear Leader have been ostracized and excommunicated from the party. Mitt Romney. Liz Cheney. Adam Kinzinger. The list goes on. The ones left, the ones who survive, are the appeasers, the cowards, the opportunists. And the funny thing is, I don't even believe the GOP politicians left are true believers. They just know they have to placate the base that are. The ones who believe only Trump can save America. The ones who believe God chose Trump.

That is a cult.

I can speak directly to this.

I inexplicably suffered a severe deterioration of my hearing in my late 20s. I went to the world-class Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne where I was assessed as eligible for a cochlear implant. Within about three months, I was scheduled for surgery with a leading surgeon and pre-eminent professor from the University of Melbourne (a top 20 university globally for medicine, ranking behind only Harvard, Stanford, John Hopkins, Yale, Pennsylvania, Colombia and UCLA of the U.S. institutions). The surgery, the equipment, the pre- and post- operative care and ongoing clinical support - all of it has cost me about $900 total out-of-pocket (which was pretty much the anesthetist’s fees).

By comparison, the surgery alone in the U.S. would be in the range of $120,000, likely at a comparatively inferior institution. I joined some Facebook groups around the time of my surgery and I can see how harrowing and uncertain it is for people with such high out-of-pocket expenses up to and including insurance coverage being denied coverage outright. It can be such a critical intervention for kids at an early stage of their development too, that the deferral or inability to access the technology can be life-altering.

I’m not sure my income taxes necessarily are that much higher than in the U.S. either. You do pay 45c in the dollar on every dollar earned over $190,000. I don’t know how that stacks up internationally. You’re not rich at that level, but you’re not scraping by either.
