I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I think this is a new one, so many Rs getting it I’ve lost track. SMH.

This is so sad and so crazy. These people are delusional - it is genuine psychosis.

    Thread:

The only thing worse than someone who doesn’t think anything is real unless it happens to them personally (or to someone in their immediate orbit) is someone who STILL doesn’t think it’s real after it does happen to them

The virus is out of control now. We should take drastic measures. Most are doing half measures, and it isn’t working, largely because of the denialists. The US may have to declare martial law to get control of the virus spread wherever the positivity rate is high. I think that may be Trump’s hope, but without it, there will be unacceptable amounts of death and illness before Biden gets into office.

Here is what I think it would take:
The period of martial law only needs to last about 2 weeks to stop the spread. During the period of martial Law, only essential workers should be allowed out to distribute tests, go to hospitals to treat the ill, and to distribute food. We need everyone else in the US to remain in their homes, tested several times within a few days and reported. Those that have the virus, should be required to quarantined until they get 2 negative tests.

I think this is what Asian countries have done. We have resisted it due our notions of freedom, but we are in desperate territory. Unfortunately Trump is the last person that I want leading this effort, thus we’re probably going to keep getting worse in places that don’t implement these measures and it will have to be done State by state.

Hell no to martial law. States can do their own mitigation efforts until Biden gets into office then maybe consider it. But Trump plus martial law would be a disastrous policy at this point. It would be a complete sheetshow.

I do agree something needs to be done, but at least at the federal level, it's gotta be done right.

Yea this currently + can you imagine the ridiculousness that would result from a Democrat trying to go this route? On its face, I understand/agree with what Lapaz is saying, but the ship sailed when public health became a politically charged issue.

Man, I hate to sound defeatist, but I think it's done until Biden gets in office.

You have Thanksgiving, and Christmas coming up. People are going to want to see their families, and it's going to continue to spread even worse then. I wouldn't be shocked if we get to 300k weekly infection rate.

I don't get the family gathering thing. We're not going anywhere and not inviting anyone for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I guess people are willing to risk it. Meh.

it scares me to even consider it at the US level, but it should at least be done at state level wherever the positivity rate is too high. Governors should announce their policy so people know what the thresholds are.

You mean daily? Because we're way past 300k per week already.
I said a couple of weeks ago that I expected us to reach 200k per day, and I thought that was a reach, but now I think we may reach 500k per day by the time Biden is inaugurated unless we take more restrictive measures. Fortunately there will be a vaccine before the end of the year, but only health care workers will get the first vaccines. The problem is that those that get infected before then won’t be helped by a vaccine. If we exceed even 200k per day consistently going forward, we will not have medical facilities available anywhere in the US by the end of the year. Even if we stay above 100k per day, then we’ll probably max out our facilities before Biden takes office. We need to take drastic measures for a few weeks, and it needs to be part of a strategy/plan that tests and isolates where needed.
