I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I saw the aide on CNN this morning

At some point can any of this be considered criminal?

And I don't mean just saying "That's criminal!"

I mean with criminal with actual charges and consequences

WASHINGTON — Top White House officials pressured the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this summer to play down the risk of sending children back to school, a strikingly political intervention in one of the most sensitive public health debates of the pandemic, according to documents and interviews with current and former government officials.

As part of their behind-the-scenes effort, White House officials also tried to circumvent the C.D.C. in a search for alternate data showing that the pandemic was weakening and posed little danger to children.

The documents and interviews show how the White House spent weeks trying to press public health professionals to fall in line with President Trump’s election-year agenda of pushing to reopen schools and the economy as quickly as possible. The president and his team have remained defiant in their demand for schools to get back to normal, even as coronavirus cases have once again ticked up, in some cases linked to school and college reopenings.

The effort included Dr. Deborah L. Birx, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, and officials working for Vice President Mike Pence, who led the task force. It left officials at the C.D.C., long considered the world’s premier public health agency, alarmed at the degree of pressure from the White House....................

Unfortunately, I'm concerned that this is the beginning of what will be the biggest rash of unemployment due to the pandemic. I think a lot of companies have been holding out hope that they could start gearing back up in the 4th Quarter. I think they are now seeing that is unlikely.

Yep. Airlines, despite getting tons of dough, have sent out furlough letters as well that will take effect in October. Shirt is really about to hit the fan.

And with no relief or help coming from Congress and this administration, defaults are going to start skyrocketing.

Canada's biggest airline, Air Canada, dropped 3.5% today amidst pandemic concerns

This thing between Chris Cuomo and Ted Cruz going on CNN right now is downright comical.

That was just nuts. Cruz attacking his brother, Chris recounting Trump's attacks on Cruz... Out of control.

And Chris asked him... What happened to the Ted that called out Trump 4 years ago?? Cruz then deflected to devaluing CNN and their democratic slants.

This went on for like 10 min. Cruz still avoided everything Chris asked about Trump. We all know why.

Wisconsin and areas around Mo and TN aren't looking too good.

My son teaches at a Community College in MO. He contracted the virus the first week of school in August about a month ago. He seems to have had a fairly mild case, but he still doesn’t have his sense of taste and smell back although it’s starting to come back a little. The school is pretty much racking up the cases, some of his students are pulled out each week. The town’s deaths in the hospital are up also, because if young people have it they pass it around to older people. The governor is very pro-Trump and he and his wife came down with the virus as well evidently after visiting a nursing home. It’s not a good situation. We normally go visit him in November, but he told us to not come. Sigh.

My wife had concerns about in person internships (for her MSE program) and then how online (like TED talks) wouldnt meet the demands of clinician practice. My wife suggested they consider waiving the requirements for hours for fall, since their backup plan sorta sucked. She said, they are Guinea pigs here, and it isnt safe. She was laughed at by the program head. (At least how she took it).

As I said on SR a while back, two people contracted covid at her internship. One intern and the supervisor. We assume the intern brought it in. My wife was covid free.

Well, the supervisor seems to have given it to his partner (maybe from before he knew he had it). I guess the partner is doing very poorly in the ICU and may not make it.

It is sort of a mind **** to think that rushing interns back into the field could have caused this chain reaction, that may very well lead to a very kind man's death. (I dont know him, I just heard he'd bring treats for everyone every Friday and seemed universally liked).
