I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I agree with you that racists will be racists no matter what we call the virus, and most people are not doing it out of racists motivations, but it is still worthwhile to curb the use of the term Wuhan, because it is unnecessary and harmful. It is harmful because some people don't need much to prompt them to act on their stupidity. I don't think it is a major contributor on how people act out, but I think it is a contributor. Trump uses it to rile-up his base. That tells me a lot about how it affects people's psyche.
I am going to have to quote you again, as I should've expanded on my thought

As before, I do take your point. And it is a valid point. At the same time, whatever we call this virus/disease, whatever we force people and ourselves to call it, prejudice doesn't go away because we don't use the words in public. Being that I am Mexican, and let's just say being Mexican kind of took a turn for the worse in 2015, I prefer my prejudice and racism in front of me, not behind my back.

And it is not as the general public doesn't know where it came from. We were bombarded with the pictures and the video via news networks, blogs, twitter, FB, etc. 24x7 from China for months. Not because months later we set on a name makes everyone forget where it came from.

... maybe the name "corona" needs to go away too, lest the racists start blaming México for it.

Theres a lot of xenophobia and racism and prejudice going on around the world, this pandemic just amps it up greater. A couple weeks back I read an article where migrants from Africa who live/have lived in China for a couple decades are now seeing signs targeting them. Some places not allowing them to enter shops/restaurants etc.

Feel free to take it to the Mud Pitt if you have something to say that you cant say here.

I don't need the mud pit. I prefer an intellectual, respectful debate wich can be supported by factual data. Not mudslinging , whataboutism and namecalling. Call me oldfashioned if you want but general lack of mutual respect, drive-by posting, and namecalling does not encourage communication and only lead to what Andrus said - two sides shouting at each other.

I felt Andrus' posts were meant to convey that he didn't want us bickering here on the MCB. If you have something to say to me that you do not feel meets that standard, I am willing to listen. If you don't want to take it up via PMs that's fine, but please don't continue bickering here.

No bickering. Just saying why I wont use the pit. :)

Do you truly feel that we all worship Trump?

Yep. Sure do. Like he is Jim Jones.

I certainly think it is a cult like thing.

The absolute butt crevasse things he does to other humans and you all give him a pass.

I can go on an on about butt crevasse stuff he has done from the people of Scotland to small contractors and not even touch on his personal life and I would never ever in a million years support him in anything. Not even running for dog catcher!

Do you think it is just by chance that the life long Democrat that trump was left the party after a black guy won the highest office? Or the simplest answer is that he is a racist and has always been?

So you can drink that punch it might be poison might not but it damn sure is not good for you.

My 88 year old grandfather passed away last night at an assisted living facility in Fairhope, AL. He wasn't tested for coronavirus but had a sudden onset of respiratory issues in the past few days. I don't think we'll ever know and it could just be a coincidence that it happened now, but I gotta think there's a decent chance that he had it.

I’m so sorry to hear this

    ==================

Last I read they think a bat infected a pangolin? (Kind of anteater) and eating that passed to humans

And I assume that the Chinese have been eating both for centuries or longer

To me this is like calling it the Chinese or Wuhan virus

Just a subtle (or not so subtle) way to say

This is all happening because of THOSE foreign people in THAT foreign country

Bringing up the bat just adds to it

This is all happening because THOSE foreign people in THAT foreign country EAT filthy vermin because of THEIR primitive backwards foreign ways

I called my parents a few nights ago to tell them to be cautious when stepping out of the house, because they might be targets of verbal or even physical abuse. It felt so strange. Our roles had flipped.

My plea mirrored the admonitions I received from them as a child growing up in Houston. The world, they cautioned, was hostile and it viewed us as strangers. So they warned me to stick close to my family. Close to my kind.

The fact that the coronavirus seems to have originated in China has spawned a slew of anti-Asian hate crimes. Across the country, Asian American parents and children are making versions of the call I made. Friends are sharing first-hand accounts of abuse on text chains and circulating articles on Facebook, always ending with the suddenly ominous “stay safe.”

Growing up, the assumption was that once we became American enough, there would be no need for such warnings — that we would be safe. To that end, my parents encouraged me and my younger brother to watch as much television as possible, so that we might learn to speak and act like the natives. The hope was that race would not disadvantage us — the next generation — if we played our cards right.

When I became an actor (maybe as a result of all that TV), and really started to work, I felt glimmers of my parents’ hope coming to fruition — doors were open, strangers were kinder. In some ways, I began to lead a life devoid of race. But I’ve learned that a moment always comes along to remind you that your race defines you above all else.......................

NEW YORK (AP) — Actress Olivia Cheng was recently volunteering in Vancouver when she says she witnessed a man drive up to an elderly Chinese woman, roll down his window and yell, “This is your fault!” before throwing trash at her.

The incident enraged Cheng, and also served as another reason why she feels it’s so important for celebrities of Asian descent to use their voices and speak up against anti-Asian attacks, which authorities say are increasing during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I don’t think we can pretend that this isn’t happening,” Cheng, who stars in “The Stand” on CBS All Access, said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “For now, it would not be unwise to be a little more careful, to maybe have buddy systems when possible to go get your groceries if you’re not feeling safe.”

The FBI reports there has been an uptick in hate crimes and harassment against Asian Americans since the outbreak of COVID-19, which first appeared in Wuhan, China, late last year........

No offense, but every thread doesn't have to be about racism. Perhaps we could have an "Everything's Racist Rant!" thread, hosted by Homey D. Clown.

I think the problem could have been fixed a long time ago by not calling it the China virus!

About a month ago the hand full of posters that do that stopped.

And shockingly after the orange guy tells us to accually poison ourselves this come back up?

I would one day hope the racist would at least get how obvious they are. When your argument holds no water this is what you do.

I really like the Homey bit pure class!

    Hi moose!

Yeah, I was really upset about the lady getting attacked, until I read that it happened in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

As for your gymnastic, I really hope she turns to out to be lying about her party affiliation, as well as all of their financial contributions over the years to the Democratic party turn out to be false as well, so you can solidify your stance that she was as Trumper, i really do.
I know you can read. I know you're smart. And that is not what I said. What I said is that stupid knows no political affiliation, and that woman being a democrat or not isn't important. The person giving the message is what is important. There will always be dumb reactions, which is one of many reasons that words matter.

Also, I think there was a chance she was just trying to kill her husband (women like their poisons), and is lying about the president.

But, whatever you want to throw out at me to deflect the fact that Trump said we can inject disinfectant in people to help with Covid-19. Why are you being so indirect about this?

    Hey DD!

What does that have to do with anything?

You just made a Homey racist joke to show your arse.

Sure that is defense for not talking about this administration and their obvious faults. Or even that he has promoted poisoning people.

Go on and be you. Would not expect anything but underhanded racist stuff.

I am not sure there is anyone who does not think the virus is real. I think there are disagreements about the purpose of what we are doing. Why should an area where hospitals are largely empty, there are adequate medical supplies, and the curve is flattened continue with stringent stay-at-home orders?
Perhaps the problem is in framing it as either-or: You are either for opening up or you are for stringent lockdown? I know a lot of right-wingers and I don't think any of them are for returning to "normal" immediately. And maybe I am misunderstanding the opposing idea as wanting to continue with stay-at-home until the threat of contracting the disease is nil?
As usual, I think the issue is that the stances are ill defined. People make it a stupid argument about "open the economy vs stay locked down". The discussion should be "how to re-open, and to what levels" I know people are having that better discussion, but it isn't being blasted on the news appropriately. Not sure if that's the fault of our political leaders, or the news.

Of course, I haven't been consuming enough news on this, I am just looking over the raw data and trying to pay attention to the Governor's addresses. I try to do some of the Federal updates, but, unless it's a doctor up there, they talk a lot and say little.

I see you are in Florida.

Be safe man. I am real worried about the neighboring states and the rural areas that are not taking this seriously enough.

I am pretty proud of how new Orleans and Louisiana have handled this in general.

But the neighbors are scaring me. I know testing is an absolute joke but the numbers are still going up in all the states that are opening. Just crazy.

For instance Louisiana has been down in new case numbers daily for a while now. The other surrounding states just keep adding more and more yet want you to go to waffle House? Makes no sense at all.
