I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I pretty certain that there isn't any place where he used the specific words "take up arms."

He retweeted a post about how civil war would ensue if he was impeached. Trump is all about revenge..

The idea is that there is a certain element of risk in many activities. Even activities where we know that death is going to happen - like car accidents. The point, as I understand it, is that the certain danger of some activity - whether it be driving in a car or going to work with other people - is outweighed at some point by the costs of not engaging in that activity.

While that may be true, there is a huge flaw in that analogy. Yes, there is an underlying element of risk in driving a car. But, for the most part, you are aware of those risks, and of where those risks lie. You can prepare for them somewhat, and you can take precautions to ensure that those risks are minimized. But, unless you can point to cases of people having car wrecks because they passed next to another car that was wrecked, then the analogy falls apart.

The risk involved with COVID-19 is different than the risk from other activities, because you can't see the risk, you can't know where the risk is, and you can't know that the risk has affected you for several days, when you could be affecting others.

The social distancing backlash is here.

Like many such eruptions of anger, it’s partly genuine and partly fed by political actors with their own preexisting agendas — in this case, mostly to rescue President Trump’s imperiled reelection campaign. And it will get ugly.

On Wednesday in Lansing, Mich., thousands of protesters came to the state capitol to demonstrate against the stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).

Though Michigan now has the fourth-highest total of covid-19 cases of any state, with nearly 2,000 deaths, the protesters argued that Whitmer’s order is unnecessary and overly strict.......

After the Lansing protest, Fox News swung into action, praising the protest on multiple programs. A representative of the MCC was interviewed on Tucker Carlson’s show Wednesday night, then came back for another interview on “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning.

The unmistakable message being communicated is that stay-at-home orders are a leftist plot, and conservatives should be rejecting them. It’s all over right-wing media:

    • Fox News host and occasional Trump adviser Jeanine Pirro praised the Michigan protesters: “God bless them, it’s going to happen all over the country.”

    • Pirro’s colleague Laura Ingraham tweeted a video of the protest, adding, “Time to get your freedom back.”

    • Rush Limbaugh accused Whitmer of being a pawn of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

    • Twitter troll and acting director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell posted a picture of the Constitution with the caption “signed permission slip to leave your house.”........

Trump just gets excited when he is the center of attention and he will say ANYTHING.

And when the number of deaths go through the roof, he'll wash his hands and refuse to take any kind of responsibilty like he has already done a few times with this.

That's exactly what he'll do.. or blame Pence. Trump is so emotional.. He has NO self control.

Notice they hacked his new wall...….

Smugglers sawed into new sections of President Trump’s border wall 18 times in the San Diego area during a single one-month span late last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection records obtained by The Washington Post via a Freedom of Information Act request.

The breaches and attempted breaches were made between Sept. 27 and Oct. 27, according to CBP records, with five of the incidents occurring on a single day, Oct. 10. The agency withheld information about the specific locations of the incidents, citing law enforcement sensitivities. The agency said the average cost to repair the damage was $620 per incident.
    ...
Trump repeatedly touted the bollard fencing as impenetrable in rallies and speeches, until The Post reported that smugglers were climbing the 30-foot structure with improvised ladders and hacking at the bollards with “recip saws” and other commercially available power tools. The president has since backed down on those claims.

True, but if you take all the flu, pneumonia, cancer and heart disease deaths and lump them into one I bet it would look like that too.
    That’s not how graphs work.

If you added all of those things together, you’d still have a flat line. It would be a bigger overall number, but the line would still be flat because the number of all of those things is largely the same over time, which is what this graph is measuring.

It’s also showing you how covid is different. Its cases are not remaining largely the same over time. Instead, they are growing exponentially. None of those other causes of death are growing exponentially, even if you add them all together.

True, but if you take all the flu, pneumonia, cancer and heart disease deaths and lump them into one I bet it would look like that too. And right now, since COVID-19 is detrimental to many other conditions. like Cancer patients and those with heart disease, it will be counted as COVID instead of those other reasons. Is there anyway to find out how many deaths we have had this year from the normal flue this year? I bet not, I have a feeling they are all just being categorized as COVID-19

No, what you are seeing is exponential growth. This virus can do that because it’s a novel virus and theres no native immunity. Even the flu doesn’t do that.

Also, flu is quite easily diagnosed with a 15 minute test. We do hundreds of those tests each week, so it’s highly unlikely there are any influenza cases being classified as Covid. Plus, finally, in the past 2-3 weeks everyone who is hospitalized with Covid symptoms is getting tested for Covid. It’s the more mild cases that we aren’t really testing in any numbers just yet. So those people are still walking around and infecting others, which is why we see exponential growth.

Well considering Ireland is about the same population as Louisiana and we have well more than twice as many deaths with more infected with the crappy testing going on in my State I would say that Ireland is doing pretty good and not celebrating at Patrick's day is gonna save serious lives just like Mardi gras is gonna be responsible for multiple deaths.
Iceland is the country that has nailed it. Out of approximately 1760 cases, about 1300 have recovered and only 9 have died. That’s only a 1% fatality rate. They have tested about 10% of their 330,000 citizens and are tracing all cases. Controversially their kids are still going to school, and most businesses are still open, yet their active cases are dropping because the sick or suspected sick are quarantined, while the rest of society goes about living. The key is obviously the contact tracing. If we can do that here, then life can return to close to normal like in Iceland.

I think what really worries me is that so many can carry it without having any outward symptoms. See an old lady or old man at the grocery store and say hi in passing? That could be the same breath that later kills them (and probably has, in some cases).

I'm not saying I know the answers. I do not. We're dealing with an unprecedented disease unlike many we're accustomed to facing. It varies from no symptoms at all to killing people in a matter of days, depending on underlying conditions. It's more scary because of all we don't know, and if I can limit the possibility that I will unknowingly cause pain or death to any person, I will abide by those rules until we have a better understanding in place of how to strategically face this invisible enemy.

    Yeah they have I agree.

With no population to speak of and still too cold for tourist they did have major advantages.

Considering April is the first month above freezing in iceland they had a huge advantage of people being bundled up.

But yes they tested real well and I am sure the universal healthcare sure don't hurt.

Our president is parroting the same lines. He is still in denial mode about this virus. To be honest, he has little else to do until reality forces him to accept it. Just ignore him and prepare as best you can.

Trump is pretty lazy.. He's fixated on self promotion and revenge. That's SOP for him.

It's really not a good time for everything to be filtered though a lens of hyper-partisanship:

Hyperpartisanship hurts.. it doesn't help at all.

Let me guess, these "Tea Party" people were putting nooses around people's necks, pouring bleach on them and screaming "this is MAGA country!"

You need to come to grips with the fact leftists lie about this kind of crap all the time.

For example, that Karen up in MI just said there were protestors with Nazi flags. In actuality, there was a Bernie bro there with a Swastika on it that also had the names of Trump and Pence

You need to come to grips with the fact that the far right people have lost their collective minds. This was not leftists lying about their actions I noted above. This was from videos from a local Facebook page that I am a member of. It is not a political group. The people that posted it were not "leftists." They were neighbors who are centrists, some of whom even lean a little to the right.

Nice try at deflection. You completely failed to address the out of control behavior of the Tea Party. Instead, you claim it is false information spread by "leftists." Trump would be proud. George Washington, not so much.
