I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

So we've set up a system to further drive up the price of ppe.

Drove the price of N95 masks from $0.63 to $5.50 each.

    Is the swamp empty yet?

South Carolina has laws against price gouging like after a hurricane.. and they have prosecuted offenders.. Wouldn't raising the price of face masks from 63 cents to $5.50 be price gouging?

    Hi Lapz.

You do know there are already bills in Congress to de-fund the UN for its graft and corruption right?
Those bills are still in play. They just haven't been enacted.

There's also a great bill Joe mentioned that enacts some super tough gun regulations. Since that is still in play, it's obviously a good thing, right?

It depends on who receives the profits.

If we do it, it's illegal. If rich people and/or politicians do it nothing will happen.

Let's say that this "company" makes a $40 million dollar profit. They make $5 million in campaign contributions to both sides, fill a few slush funds, and are "caught" gouging and ordered to pay a $10 million dollar fine.

They still make about $20 million.

I was thinking more along the lines of tripling the price of generators after a hurricane.

    Meanwhile,

As the Trump administration discouraged mask use for the public, the National Security Council secured a personal stash of 3,600 masks for White House staff. A senior NSC appealed to Taiwan on March 14 for a donation of hundreds of thousands of surgical masks. At the time, the Trump administration was discouraging Americans from wearing masks, saying that healthy people didn’t need them and that the gear should be saved for medical workers. (Washington Post)

Louisiana won't be reopening.. They had 53 deaths yesterday and the governor said its a non starter.

    Realistically Louisiana should not reopen.

A week ago or so I read an article that basically said all but new Orleans was taking the lock down as a joke. They used cell phone data that showed everyone but the new Orleans area was still traveling just as much as before this all happened.

That is why Shreveport is blowing up with cases right now and Laplace has the highest death rate per capital in the nation.

No that is the free market that the republicans want so it is not price gouging.

Supply and demand set the price and plenty of cash for the middle man. Accually most of it is for a middle man.

I know... Its very sad. They didn't even shut down Mardi Gras. Party on. Maybe if Trump had been more forceful about how dangerous this virus is. He vacillates between blaming others and downplaying the virus.

"The WHO, meanwhile, responded to Trump’s threat to cutoff U.S. funding and accusation that it was “severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” saying “We alerted the world on January the 5th. Systems around the world, including the U.S., began to activate their incident management systems on January the 6th. And […] we’ve produced multiple updates […] on the developing situation — and that is what it was, a developing situation.” (ProPublica / NPR / New York Times)"

Realistically that would have had to come from this administration to tell a state they were at risk. That would have been real early but the right thing to do.

If you want to look up the model of how merica should have handled this Google what Ireland has done. They have flat nailed it.

They shut down everything fast. No at Patrick's stuff. Actually over 50 percent of the deaths they have had are in retirement communities and are now sending hospital crews directly to retirement homes. Ireland has only lost just over 500 people.

    Impressive job by them.

Anecdotal, but at least one other person here has mentioned similar. There were people gathering, having parties, letting their kids play together...basically acting like nothing was going on until Trump/Fox finally started taking COVID seriously. I can’t tell you how many people during that span told me the virus was overblown/no big deal. It’s been better since, but the stores are still a bit crowded (people obviously still have to buy stuff, of course) and not many people wear protective gear. Granted, the mask guideline was still fresh last time I went out.

So yes, lockdown was being treated like a joke for far too long.

I read that Denmark shut down quickly and completely and they haven't had many losses.

    Covid-19: 43 more deaths, 724 new cases

    4/16

Yeah we have been pretty good here in new Orleans but some of the things are completely head scratching.

Like the city's landscape crews and meter maids have not taken a day off. For the life of me I don't know why that eight man crew I saw pruning oak trees was working today and I am more than sure if they have 8 on a crew then back at the shop you had more than ten meeting up.

I am gonna love the wealth of parking and traffic tickets to pay for the budget shortfalls that are headed my way after this is over. After Katrina they were giving them away like mad to pay bills.

    Be safe

Trump: The federal government will defer to governors on how to handle each state and we will support them.

Also Trump: Take up arms and liberate yourselves from your stay at home orders from Democrat governors!!!!!!!
