I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

    Unbelievable, but predictable and pathetic.
I’d say even this caught me off guard.

    It was honestly surreal.

Leading a press conference in a pandemic to play a government funded and edited video to gaslight the public about his handling of the pandemic.

Thankfully one of the reporters took him to task, but the press NEEDS to finally take up the strategy of refusing to drop a question until it is answered, Every question should be about what he did in February since the China ban until he gives an answer. If he drops the reporter the next one should ask the same question.

Yea, Trump wants a participation trophy because what he did was better than doing nothing.

That has been the bar for success his entire life.

Trump is literally airing North Korea style propaganda to gaslight the public about his handling of the virus now.

    Unbelievable
Is it just me, or did all his "media downplays the virus" clips come from none other than Fox News? Plus, his own self-promotional revisionist history video completely omitted everything he did in the month of February. Some shoddy editing right there.

Yeah, it was pretty shocking. I mean, I've gotten used to these press briefings being more about self-congratulation than providing useful information to the public, along with the obligatory Airing of Trump's Grievances - but this went to a whole nother level.

Mississippi's governor says that his stay at home and chill order will expire in schedule a week from today.

Hopefully other states will remove their restrictions.

Look, both Jared AND Ivanka are on the case. And the stock guy from teh TV. And some other really fine people who we should all trust and believe in.

Jared Kushner continues to impress me. I mean, currently he is settling thousands of years of conflict in the middle east, running a second coronavirus task force, and now he is also on the commission to reopen the country.

That's some Michael Jordan levels of effort.

“The authority of the president is total.”

    *checks constitution*

    Nope

...The floor is yours small government Republicans.
What boggles my mind isn't whether he's right or wrong. It's that he can't even decide what position he wants to take from one day to the next. I mean, less than 2 weeks ago, wasn't his position that it's up to the governors to decide whether to shut down their states? Jesus Christ.

P.S. - I would love to hear Jim Everett's take on Trump's Position of the Day here.

Not just you, the opening of the propaganda was literally just a Hannity clip segment:

Then edited, presumably on taxpayer money, with cherry picked clips praising Trump.

It is literally the sort of shirt autocratic regimes do.

Did you see the news about the evangelical preacher in Virginia who died right before Easter? He had preached defiance re: the virus,.. and held church services in spite of orders for social distancing.

I think it all comes back to the same thing, Trump was willing, and will be willing, to put the economy above human life. In between poorly managing this crisis.

He was ok when governors were refusing to shut down to stem the bleeding and help corporate margins as long as possible, now he is willing to shirk the constition to try and force them to put people back to work.

All while he proclaims there now won’t be country wide testing and tracking(after promising anyone that wants a test can get one).

I think everything you said is correct, but it's even simpler. He let the governors take the lead early because he was still in denial and had no plan. Now, unfortunately, he still has no plan but recognizes that allowing a pandemic and a recession to run unchecked will maybe hurt his re-election chances. So, since he has no plan to deal with the pandemic, he thinks he can force the country to "re-open" to - in his deluded magical thinking - bring things back to normal by somehow pretending and asking everyone else to pretend the pandemic is over.

Trump wants to brag about his response and blame the governors for whatever doesn't go well.

Why? What models are you looking at to drive that stance?

After what we have seen of models over the last few weeks, which ones do you trust?

I am looking at the fact that 16,000,000 are unemployed and that number is rising.

I think in the final analysis this virus is going to have a mortality rate about like the seasonal flu.

The plan was never to stay under house arrest until the Chinese virus was eradicated. I don't think we need to take a Justin Trudeau type approach to this. We can't wait until there is a vaccine before returning to normal.

If we don't get this economy rolling we are going to ruin and lose a lot more lives to poverty than we stand to lose to the virus.

We can of course look at other ways to mitigate the spread and effects of the virus, but just bankrupting the nation doesn't seem like a choice that is backed up by science as the most rational choice.

And when it flares back up and fear overtakes people again, how will that help the economy. The best help for the economy is eradicating this virus and people having confidence in going about their business.
it is not the forking flu, it has a higher fatality rate for anyone who catches it. more people are dying from it a day in the US than cancer now.
