I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Me too . . . except New Jersey.

I went to school in New Jersey. Outside of the biggest cities, it's a beautiful place. The south has swamps and timber and is eerily similar to SE LA. Even the dialect is NOLAish only faster. The regional cuisines are obviously related and the seafood - while different - rings like a cousin's voice. The central part is rolling hills and farmland with rural roads crisscrossing myriad towns and cities where millions of our fellow Americans live. I was lucky enough to spend months up there assisting with Hurricane Sandy issues and was happy to revisit my old stomping grounds and to reconnect with old friends.

I don't think those fine folks would share your attitude of callous disregard for you that you have for them, but they should.

Interesting, the drugs that many people keep saying don't work, worked for this guy too.

Doctors began treating him with hydroxycloriquine and zithromax. For Clint, the drugs worked. Within two days, he began to improve.

I don't think anyone would be smart in saying that it doesn't work period, nor have I heard of such people. I think the consensus has been we don't know enough yet to swing way to one side or not.

I believe Dr. Fauci was quoted as saying that more testing should be done before we can get to a point we say unequivocally that they've been proven to work for most patients. That's why it's important that anyone, especially people with high positions of influence like the POTUS, not be too quick to insinuate they've found a possible cure.

For example, there has been a study that links it to being possibly lethal when combined with diabetic drugs:

This really is neither edgy nor intelligent.
Oh, for pity's sake, lighten up!

I've been to New Jersey many times and served with Marines and soldiers from New Jersey.
They never failed to give me a hard time for being a "stupid, redneck, hillbilly, hick from the sticks" because of my MissLou accent.
And the guys from New York never failed to harass them for, well, being from Jersey!

In "Sleeper," Woody Allen declaimed, "I believe there's an intelligence to the universe, with the exception of certain parts of New Jersey."

George Carlin directed attention to the state's nickname: "I say let them put it right on the license plate, 'NJ, the Tollbooth State.' What does it say now, the Garden State? Sure if you're growing smokestacks, yes."

The "Jersey joke" has been around at least a hundred years, even in song. ("I could say some nasty things about New Jersey. But once my darling mother said, 'Don't speak unkindly of the dead.'")

But even the grittiest Garden Stater must be taken aback by the latest superfund of sleaze to get dumped on the state - reality shows "Real Housewives of New Jersey," and most toxic of all, MTV's "Jersey Shore," starring Snooki and The Situation.

So what did New Jersey do to deserve this?

"Benjamin Franklin said, 'New Jersey is like a barrel tapped at both ends,'" said Michael Rockland, a professor of Jerseyana at New Jersey's Rutgers University.

"New Jersey's caught between two major cities, New York and Philadelphia," said Rockland, "and it's always been fashionable in both of those places to put down New Jersey. We're their country cousins, if you will."

Since your purpose here is to share your own thoughts, can you please expand on this one? Why are people from New Jersey not worth caring about?
It's a running gag that's been part of the American scene since the time of Ben Franklin. It's a joke.

Any reason you ignored the first part of my post? In case you missed it, I was just trying to make sure you were aware that you were dismissing someone as "getting out a message", when in reality they were saying that a legitimate newspaper article should be spread.

As a newspaper guy, do you think that legitimate and factual newspaper articles should reach as many people as possible?

I didn't see any personal commentary or original thought, so I didn't offer any in return.
There was a comment a few pages back about not posting naked links, but everybody seems to be ignoring it.

    It wasn't a naked link.

What are your thoughts on the feds seizing shipments of supplies, such as the masks from New Jersey and Massachusetts?

That's good and all, I'm just saying that the next time Louisiana gets hit by a hurricane or some other unfortunate event (maybe people getting ill from COVID-19 in record number in New Orleans), I hope you'd have the same reaction to someone on here saying "I really, really could care less about Louisiana" in response. I doubt you wouldn't feel slighted at least.

All I'm saying is that it comes off as "screw them, who cares" vs. being a joke. If that's not what you meant -- cool. Moving on, just my 2 cents.

We’re any of those jokes going back to Benjamin Franklin told during a national crisis when New Jersey was particularly hard hit and in desperate need of help?

People have always told rude, obnoxious New Yorker jokes for decades too.

September 12th 2001 probably wasn’t a good day to bust them out

I well-remember my bunk mate from New Jersey, my first year in the Marines. His name was Patterson.
"Hey, Dadsdream, what do stupid ****ers from Looo-eeez-e-ana do for fun . . . go out in the backyard and **** an alligator?"
"Hey, Dadsdream, when you get tired of her, can I date your sister?"
"Hey, Dadsdream, what has 24 legs, 24 breasts and two teeth? A squad of Looo-eeez-e-ana cheerleaders!"

Yeah, Heathen, I know exactly what Patterson would say about your concern for his home state. :hihi:

There were British troops marching through the state at will, seizing property and summarily executing "traitors." Does that count?

The coronavirus is not limited to New Jersey and we here on the Gulf Coast are suffering the effects as well.
So, the 9/11 rude obnoxious New Yorker comparison is bogus.

Are you suggesting that 9/11 was 'limited to New York" and the Gulf Coast and the whole rest of the country wasn't effected at all?

Are you suggesting that the people in DC and Northern VA could have told rude obnoxious New Yorker jokes after 9/11 because they were "suffering the same effects as well"?

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make

Also, in cases like that, who's to say that it was that particular drug that made him better, and that he wouldn't have gotten better in the same time with other treatment protocols?

    "affected" not "effected"
    No.
    No.
It's not the day after 9/11 where several thousand people died in one place on one day.
It's a nationwide pandemic, with fatality estimates running at 1/4 million nationwide.
Yes, everybody knows the grim reality of the situation.
But that doesn't mean we can't make fun of New Jersey, for crying out loud! :hihi:
