Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

  • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
  • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In a surprising move, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has signed bills protecting same-sex marriages at a state level.

The bills, which were passed out of both chambers along mostly party lines, will require clerks to issue marriage licenses to couples regardless of each person’s sex or gender.

One of the bill’s authors, Del. Rozia Henson (D- Prince William), is the first openly gay Black man to serve in the Virginia General Assembly. He said he applauded Youngkin’s decision.

“The governor has signaled with my bill that Virginia will be for lovers,” Henson said.

The bills do include exceptions for religious organizations and members of the clergy acting in their religious capacity, who may legally refuse to perform any marriage.

8News reached out to Youngkin’s office and a spokesperson provided the following statement:

“This bill adds First Amendment protections to the code of Virginia. Religious organizations and members of the clergy acting in their religious capacity now have the authority to decline to officiate marriage ceremonies that violate their conscience. The remainder of the bill deals with the ministerial duties of issuing licenses, which is already guided by federal preemption.” ............

I find it hard to believe there were clergy or churches being forced to perform same sex marriages in Virginia. I don’t think that has ever happened, and I think they have always had the authority to deny to perform any marriage they don’t want to perform. Seems like a bull shirt explanation to me.

I have talked about this on other boards. The phrase “by the power vested in me by the state of…” needs to be removed from clergy. They must be permitted to perform whatever marriage ceremony they like but that ceremony must have no bearing on the legality of a marriage. Once a couple gets a marriage license they are married, period. They can have any religious ceremony that they wish. Said ceremony would have no bearing legally.

When Cameron Whitley was diagnosed with kidney failure seven years ago, the news came as a shock. But the situation was about to get worse. His doctor decided the diagnosis meant Whitley’s hormone therapy had to stop.

As a transgender man, now 42, who had taken testosterone for 10 years, the impact was brutal.

“Not only was I struggling with this new diagnosis that I’m in stage four kidney failure, now I’m being told that I can no longer have hormones,” said Whitley, an associate professor in the department of sociology at Western Washington University. “I cannot describe how horrible that moment was.”

Crucially, he says, the decision was completely unnecessary. “We call this within the medical community ‘trans broken arm syndrome’,” he said.

The term refers to medical situations – such as having a broken arm – that are unconnected to gender identity, yet healthcare providers act on the basis there is a connection.

“We didn’t have any established sense that being on hormones would be problematic. The hormones are not processed through the kidneys. So there was nothing that made it [necessary to stop them], but that was the first thing that was done,” he said.

Whitely has since transferred his care over to the University of Pennsylvania, which he described as “awesome [with] wonderful trans-competent care”.

An increase in the number of people coming out as transgender has led to growing use of hormone therapies, which help to change the body’s physical characteristics towards a certain gender.

But as Whitley found out, misunderstandings and knowledge gaps about their impact abound.…..

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/13/uk/england-nhs-puberty-blockers-trans-children-intl-gbr/index.html

England’s National Health Service (NHS) has stopped prescribing puberty blockers for children and young people with gender dysphoria or gender incongruence, saying there is “not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness” of puberty-suppressing hormones.

What a bunch of tranphobes. Of course their is tons of evidence. We all were told that and are still being told that. Either that or the conspiracy theory where true. What do you guys and gals think?

A federal judge in Tennessee has ordered the FBI to hand over the "manifesto" left behind by a transgender killer who gunned down three adults and three children at the Covenant Christian School in Nashville last year before responding officers put an end to the mayhem.

Audrey Elizabeth Hale, who police said identified as a trans male and went by Aiden, shot her way into the school in March 2023, killing Mike Hill, 61, Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and three 9-year-olds, Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus and William Kinney.

Why do you guys think it was not released by the FBI?

Why do you think you care so very, very much about this particular gunman, and don’t actually give a damn about the victims of any of the shootings or the other gunmen?

Are there any manifestos that are not released by the FBI having to pertain to the mass shooter?
Do I not care about any of the other victims or other gunmen? You are a liar for even saying that and you know it. Deflection only works if you are not dense enough to use it correctly.

I am sure you will now show me how many times you have commented on the shootings that were perpetrated by people who were bigots and homophobes. How many times you have demanded to see their “manifestos”. So, show me and I will admit I was wrong.

Deflection advice from the master! Thanks!

Transgender is none of your business.

Because the FBI is not in the habit of releasing manifestos.

I'd say that I'd be more interested in why this judge wants this particular "manifesto", but we all know why.

Just sharing a conversation I had today with someone I've known for a long time for whatever it's worth to anyone else.

I found out earlier today from one of my male acquaintances why he's so uncomfortable with the idea of people being transgender.

He's afraid of being "fooled" into being attracted to a "girl" that is really a "guy" and finding out after "getting hot and heavy."

First, I pointed out that he should give some thought as to why a person in their 50's would refer to adult women as "girls." Then I pointed out the rather obvious solutions, don't ogle every "girl" you see and ask them upfront before you start flirting with them.

I told him he was basically expecting everyone else to take on the responsibility of protecting and taking care of him emotionally.

I then jokingly pointed out that The Crying Game came out 32 years ago, so he's had plenty of time to sort it out. Fortunately, he laughed.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Teacher-led discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity would be banned in public schools and displaying Pride flags in classrooms would be prohibited under legislation lawmakers advanced in Alabama on Wednesday.

The measure is part of a wave of laws across the country that critics have dubbed “Don't Say Gay.” It would expand current Alabama law, which prohibits the teaching in just elementary school, to all grades.

The House Education Policy Committee approved the bill after a discussion in which the bill sponsor claimed it is needed to prevent students from being “indoctrinated,” while an opposed lawmaker said the state is essentially “bullying” some of its citizens. The bill now moves to the full Alabama House of Representatives.

Alabama's law currently prohibits instruction and teacher-led discussions on gender identity or sexual orientation in a manner that is "not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate” from kindergarten through the fifth grade. The legislation would expand the prohibition to all K-12 grades and drop the “developmentally appropriate” reference to make the prohibition absolute.............

For years, New York’s Long Island Roller Rebels have welcomed transgender women to strap on skates and body padding and join their women’s roller derby team.

Now, under an executive order issued this month by Nassau county on Long Island, if they want to book a county-run park or athletics facility they must ask each member what sex was marked on their original birth certificate, and expel any teammates who were not designated female.

The Roller Rebels say this is invasive and illegal discrimination under New York law, and, although they know of at least one transgender teammate, they simply do not know or care to inquire what their members’ birth certificates say.

“It’s gross,” said Amanda Urena, a Roller Rebel known on the rink by their derby name Curly Fry. “We don’t want to police our players’ bodies. That’s just not for us to do.”

Republican politicians in at least 23 US states have advanced scores of laws and rules in recent years restricting transgender athletes from joining girls’ or women’s teams as part of a broader legislative effort that includes restricting access to some gender-affirming medical treatments and sex-segregated toilets.

Such an order is rare in New York, one of the 22 US states that explicitly forbids discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

Last week, the Roller Rebels, represented by the New York Civil Liberties Union, sued the county executive, Bruce Blakeman, a Republican who announced his order at a 22 February press conference in Nassau county, a mostly suburban chunk of Long Island adjacent to New York City.

His order forbids the county’s department of parks, recreation & museums from issuing event permits to girls’ and women’s sports teams that cannot attest that all their members were designated female at birth.……

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, signed a law last week that includes a mandate for the state’s public schools to teach LGBTQ history, as red and blue states continue to diverge on whether schools should expose kids to gay and transgender identities.

The new law, Senate Bill 5462, mandates that the state’s school districts adopt curricula that is as “culturally and experientially diverse as possible,” including the histories of LGBTQ people, people of color and people with disabilities. Schools will be required to institute the inclusive curricula by the 2025-26 school year.

“The governor was happy to sign legislation that aims to ensure students of all races and identities feel safe and welcome at school,” Mike Faulk, a spokesperson for Inslee, said in an email Monday.

Faulk also referred NBC News to research published in the journal Sex Education that suggests LGBTQ-inclusive curricula can reduce rates of bullying and make children feel safer in school.

Kristie Bennett is a high school teacher in Sammamish, Washington, who is bisexual and leads her school’s gender-sexuality alliance organization. In an interview last week with NBC affiliate KGW of Portland, Oregon, Bennett echoed Faulk’s sentiment.

“I’ve seen firsthand how important an inclusive curriculum can be and how life-changing it can be to help a student see themselves in the curriculum instead of some old dead white guys from the 1700s,” Bennett said.............
