This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I'd like to think this, but the flaw with it is that they had the opportunity to do this post January 6th. They were publicly condemning him, speaking out against him, but when it came down to it, only ten of them in the House voted for impeaching him, and and only 7 of them in the Senate. 197 voted no in the House and 43 in the Senate.

I don't think it's better now. I mean, I'm sure a bunch of them would be happy to see the Trump era end, but are any of them willing to stand up for it? The answer would appear to be repeatedly, no. It's an open question as to what, if anything, would be a stretch too far.
Just to play Devil’s Advocate. Trump still had a second term in his back pocket.
Once 2029 hits, he’s ineligible and they can finally break off.
His presidency and any threat of him is done.

I agree and to add to this, I've said before that I believe 100% that the GOP wanted Trump gone but they didn't want to be the reason he was gone and face the full fury of MAGA, that's why they didn't vote to impeach

They said stuff like "he's not president anymore", "let the courts handle any punishment"

But I also believe 100% that they believed 100% that the MAGA base would move on and back a new horse and they could champion the legacy of Donald Trump while simultaneously moving past him

During all the charges they could rile the base up with calls of "Lawfare!" and "Partisan witch hunt!" but the base was supposed to pick someone else

    Not what happened

I would add that some of the MAGA who were encouraged to run and won seats in the House and the Senate would love to take on Trump’s mantle. That they lack his bullschlitzing ability is balanced by their sheer racism/bigotry and misogyny which plays to far too many on the right.

Unfortunately, this is a party that worships false gods. It took decades for Reagan to be quietly shunted aside. It will take decades for Trump worship to go away. And if Barron shows any skills, the rest are idiots, z Trumpism will live on. And the Party will gladly cleave to it.

But enough to carry Eric or Don Jr. to the White House?
I can understand a governorship, but Trump’s victories in 16 and 24 were narrow.
And as much as I hate typing this, Don Sr. does have a sort of aura the kids don’t have.

Don, Jr. and Eric are toxic.

It would be a Chip Roy or Clay Higgins or the cornpone idiot Kennedy or possibly Vance if that turd can be sufficiently polished. It would just take some time for a Trumplike construct to be created. Barron is the one I see as most likely of the offspring. Melanie would have to work with him to improve his image and his ability to transmit charm/charisma.

Had they done it after January 6th, they wouldn't have had to face MAGA. MAGA would have dissipated and Trump would have ended up in jail because he couldn't run again. The Republican Senators were stupid cowards with no foresight. All they needed was 3 or 4 more Republican Senators (I think 7 voted with Democrats to convict) to have an ounce of integrity and we all could have avoided the current nightmare. But that was too much to ask of the GOP even when it was clearly necessary.

They thought Trump would go away, but Trump is a roach.

The problem with Barron is that any political run for him, at least for president is at least 30-35 years away.
By that time, putting a Trump as a candidate would be the equivalent of a sequel to a movie after three decades.

Won’t argue that. The Republicans are playing a dangerous game. They are basically hoping that they can maintain MAGA as a movement. If they can then Barron might become a reality.

Meanwhile, the country slips further into “Upper Volta with nukes” status.

Not to be mean, but the GOP’s hardcore MAGA voting base is primarily older.
They probably not gonna even be around for a potential Baron run.

I don’t think that is actually true. Not any longer. Going from memory the highest % that voted for Trump came in the 40-50’s age group. Maybe 40-65. Over 65’s weren’t as high a % I don’t think.

Edit: looking at your age, maybe you think those folks won’t be around, lol.

Also Barron is 19 I’m guessing. Eligible to run in 16 years.

I think it's more likely that MAGA is already merely a means to an end for those technocrats and billionaires who have been seeking an end to democracy, and if they are successful, MAGA won't need to survive, having exhausted its value to them.

    Found the breakdown:

The caveat I'd add to the (on the face of it entirely reasonable) "there isn't another Trump" is that there wasn't a first Trump, until there was.

He was a joke candidate. Polling at 2-4%, 150-1 odds at the start in 2015.

We all know what happened next unfortunately.

But the point is, no-one realised Trump was this Trump until it happened. We may or may not see the next one coming.

When someone who has fled a despotic regime and been a lifelong conservative balks at the direction his party is going because it looks like what he left, it should get one's attention.

It got mine as that person is my father who fled Cuba in the early 70s, and voted Republican up until 2016, and now won’t even endorse Republican dog catchers because he can’t trust them anymore.

I’m not kidding when I say I never voted for Trump, nor am I lying when I say that I do not support the direction he is taking this country that was once a bastion for freedom.

This country is going to go through a 2nd “great awakening” before 2028, as so many people on the right can’t identify with the party they knew up until 9 years ago.

This is an article from 2022, for instance.

Today’s billionaire class is pushing a radically anti-democratic agenda for America – backing Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen, calling for restrictions on voting and even questioning the value of democracy.

Peter Thiel, the billionaire tech financier who is among those leading the charge, once wrote, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”

This is all bigger than Trump and MAGA.

I wish I truly was confident in this great awakening. I feel like it’s 50-50 that we can get rid of Trump at this point in time. 50-50 that we ever have a real honest election again.

This is the truly scary part. These guys (Musk, Thiel, Bezos, etc) should have been taxed out of existence as billionaires long ago. It’s never good to give such unstable people so much power. And then have SCOTUS say that money is speech was like the final nail in the coffin of our democracy. That’s what I fear, anyway.
