This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I'd like to think this, but the flaw with it is that they had the opportunity to do this post January 6th. They were publicly condemning him, speaking out against him, but when it came down to it, only ten of them in the House voted for impeaching him, and and only 7 of them in the Senate. 197 voted no in the House and 43 in the Senate.

I don't think it's better now. I mean, I'm sure a bunch of them would be happy to see the Trump era end, but are any of them willing to stand up for it? The answer would appear to be repeatedly, no. It's an open question as to what, if anything, would be a stretch too far.
Just to play Devil’s Advocate. Trump still had a second term in his back pocket.
Once 2029 hits, he’s ineligible and they can finally break off.
His presidency and any threat of him is done.

I agree and to add to this, I've said before that I believe 100% that the GOP wanted Trump gone but 100% didn't want to be the reason he was gone, that's why they didn't vote to impeach

They said stuff like "he's not president anymore", "let the courts handle any punishment"

But I also believe 100% that they believed 100% that the MAGA base would move on and back a new horse and they could champion the legacy of Donald Trump while simultaneously moving past him

During all the charges they could rile the base up with calls of "Lawfare!" and "Partisan witch hunt!" but the base was supposed to pick someone else

    Not what happened

I would add that some of the MAGA who were encouraged to run and won seats in the House and the Senate would love to take on Trump’s mantle. That they lack his bullschlitzing ability is balanced by their sheer racism/bigotry and misogyny which plays to far too many on the right.

Unfortunately, this is a party that worships false gods. It took decades for Reagan to be quietly shunted aside. It will take decades for Trump worship to go away. And if Barron shows any skills, the rest are idiots, z Trumpism will live on. And the Party will gladly cleave to it.
