Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

i think Apple and Google play both require the block/ignore function.
if he took them away, i have no doubt Apple and Google Play will dump him. they stopped him before, they'll stop him again. without those 2, he would never be able to update the app and when people get new phones, they wouldn't be able to get it.

“If I had enough money to do it, which I don’t, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.” He posits that it would take between $15 and $20 billion to turn the network around, and he simply doesn’t have the cash.
I would bet you he could raise it though.

I wonder how many of these inquiries get called off if Trump wins?

Wow, that is a lot of suspicious motivation, and worthy of investigation in and of itself. Has he become one of our corrupt oligarchs to make us look more like Russia every day?

If the outcome of this election is as close as the polls indicate, even if Harris wins, I think the world will need to adjust their expectations of the U.S. as a leader of the free world. If half of the country believes in Trumpism, we are precariously close to failing as a country and leader of the free world. Trump would lead us down the Russian corruption path, and his punitive tariff and other economic policies will greatly damage our economy, both of which would ultimately greatly weaken us. Our large fertile and resource rich territory would prop us up much like Russian oil props them up, and with our giant military, that will make us highly dangerous. Imagine if we ally with Russia and China. I don't think Western civilization can withstand that. The market and innovation losses alone would probably impact the whole world tremendously negatively. The world has to consider this possibility even if Harris wins, because a lot of Trump's supporters are young. My hope is that Trump is unique, and that Americans just want to reset culturally to the right, and Trump just happens to be the dark messenger. My hope is that Republicans will turn to someone decent in future elections to lead their desires for change. My hope is Trumpism won't succeed in destroying the country, and Republicans will return to their roots.

CBS analyzes Musk’s tweets and finds the clear majority are untrue.

“The CBS News Confirmed team fact-checked Musk's posts on election security and found that 55% contain misleading or false statements, or amplify posts that do. Further analysis of these posts showed that 40 of the accounts Musk replied to or reposted were accounts researchers have identified as promoters of voter fraud claims.”

And a recent comprehensive fact check of what Republicans say found that 55% of what they say is false. What are the odds that Elon lying at the same rate as Republicans is just mere coincidence?
