NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

Well, I'm not either. I'm just saying it's out there, that's really all.

There have been several Democrats here who weren't happy with Biden’s debate and are a bit worried the way forward and with good reason. We'll see.
    I get that there worried.

I am more worried that there are millions of people who think that Trump is Jesus Christ. The stupidity is strong with the electorate.

Others recognized the tactics as well

You sure did say “you” a lot in that post.
    And your point is?

I said "you " one time. I said "your" one time. I said "you're" two times. I said that over the course of four sentences.

You just said "you" twice in one sentence.

So again, and your point is?

I was talking to you directly, so naturally I said you, your and you're to you, because I was talking directly to you. I hope you're able to understand that now. Are you able to understand that now?

Pretty sure that it was on Friday, early in the day.
It was, which is when I thought it was.

So it doesn't dispel the dementia BS, it actually supports that idea.
First off, thanks for acknowledging the dementia stuff is BS.

Anyone who's ever interacted on a regulars basis with someone suffering sundowning, as a result of dementia, knows that people can't recall anything from when they were sundowning.

Biden clearly remembers the debate and he wouldn't have remembered anything about the debate had he been sundowning during it, so Biden's rally Friday morning actually dispels the idea that Biden's debate performance was a result of the BS dementia claims.

He did it after the debate how could he else talk about having a bad night ? So no it does not support your claim of demetia.

I honestly think he got completely thrown of by the constant lying by Trump which was never reputiated by the moderators who imho did a truely lousy job
Biden did look at the moderators a lot while Trump was lying with a look on his face, that if it were me making that look on my face, that said are you going just going to sit there say nothing about all these lies he's telling. It did seem like Biden was shocked that the moderators didn't push back on lies like moderators always have before.

It makes me think that if there was any agreement between CNN and Trump not to fact check anything Trump said, Biden didn't know anything about that agreement. I don't think Biden would have ever agreed to the debate if he knew that Trump was going to be able to blatantly lie is arse off without any push back from the moderators. The way CNN handled the debate Thursday night was worst then what they let Trump get away with in the town hall they did with Trump.

A few quotes from people quoted in that article:

For me, the choice is still clear. I will vote for Biden if he is on the ticket, because the alternative is worse.
Biden has plenty of time to recover.
Trump’s gruff, surly appearance, combined with his scathing and apocalyptic rhetoric, may have turned off swing voters.
And, of course, the most spectacular act of domestic terrorism in decades took place at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Some 140 police officers were assaulted while Trump failed to put a stop to it for hours while it unfolded. If elected, Trump has promised to pardon a “large portion” of the rioters — a point that Biden also reminded viewers of during the debate.
Listening to Trump, it has become clear again that America’s future as a democracy is in danger; the future character of the nation is at risk.
While pundits and commentators will largely focus on the candidates’ performances, we shouldn’t ignore the fact that within former President Donald Trump’s torrent of lies, he deflected answering questions on two major issues: his role in the January 6 insurrection and whether or not he will accept the results of the 2024 election.
    ...
Both questions get to the heart of voters’ concerns about whether or not Trump might use a second term to undermine our democracy.

I don't put much stock in polls or anything, but interesting to see a poll on Smerconish.com asking whether the Demoratic National Convention nomination be a contested one and 70% said yes. I don't think that's going to happen, but it's interesting to see that many wanting to see it happen.
To me the subtext is that those 70% really don't want Trump to be president and will likely vote for Biden if the only choice is between Biden and Trump.

Gavin Newsome is one of the more well known Democrats...
    This part is accurate.
...and the DNC can find his campaign,
Only the general donations the DNC received. They can not use any funds they raised using Biden/Harris in the fundraising solicitations. The DNC's general funds are not enough to fund a Newsom campaign, because they use most of that money on Congressional races.

...plus if he put Harris on the ticket, I think he could use the money sent to the Biden campaign.
First, good luck getting Harris to accepting that and I find it rather disrespectful that anyone would assume that she should accept that. The more likely would be that Harris would move up to president and Newsom would be her VP running mate. Good luck getting Newsom to accept that. This is a video game where you can just make things happen. You have to get people to agree to do these things before they can happen.

If Harris is on the ticket, then they could possibly legally use the funds that Biden-Harris raised, but they would be sued to hell and back by Trump supporters which would keep them from actually being able to use the funds before the election.

Besides, the Biden voters fall into the Democratic voters and the anti-Trump voters.
And they are going to vote for Biden if he's on the ballot. 2020 was more about voters rejecting Trump than it was about voters wanting Biden. More voters have even more fear and anger fueled motivation to reject Trump now than they did in 2024.

People were and are still highly motivated to vote against Trump. Since the 2020 election, Trump has motivated for more voters against him than the number of voters he may have bamboozled into joining him in the dark side.

People have no patience, I get that. The best time for the Biden campaign to hammer the message that this election is about accepting or rejecting Trump and where he an his cohorts want to take the country is not now. The time for that media blitz to start is in mid to late Sept. Just like the NFL, everything that happens in a presidential campaign before Sept is just the preseason. The scoring that really determines who wins and who loses doesn't start until Sept.

Question is how many of those who responded are MAGAs? Trump has been trying to get rid of Biden for a looooooong time
Exactly and I'm completely baffled that so many people don't understand that Trump and his campaign are desperate to get Biden to drop out, because their data is telling them Trump will have a hard time beating Biden.

If the cult of Trump's data was telling them that Trump was likely going to beat Biden, then they don't say jack squat about Biden needing to drop out.

Everyone knows that Trump wants what's best for him and Trump desperately wants Biden to be forced out of the race, so that means what's best for Trump is for Biden to drop out. Conversely, that also means that what's worse for Trump is Biden to stay in.

Has everyone forgotten that Trump applied this same exact pressure campaign of "Biden's senile and too low energy" as he's doing now. He did it then, because Trump and his people were worried he would lose to Biden, rightfully so as history shows.

They are just as worried now as they were then and they know everything that we do, which is that Biden is four years older and a little more slowed down. Even knowing that, Trump and his cult are still trying to pressure Biden to drop out of the race.

It just baffles me that so many people don't see the obvious, especially when it's a rinse and repeat of 2020.

...nearly 50% of the country doesn’t care that he is a crook and a liar...
Only according to polls that constantly prove to be unreliable and inaccurately skewed in favor of Trump.

Based on the constant and consistent polling inaccuracies of the past few election cycles, the polls showing 50% don't care about Trump being a liar and a crook most likely means the actual percentage of people who don't care is 40% or below.

Trump's cult has their own secret polling data that they rely on the most, just like all campaigns do. In reaction to their secret data that they rely on the most, they are desperately trying to get the Democratic party to force Biden to drop out, just like they did in 2020. They wouldn't be doing that if they thought Trump was more likely to lose if Biden dropped out. They are doing that because their own data is telling them they are most likely to lose if Biden doesn't drop out, just like in 2020.

I still don’t understand why they would take him out to Waffle House in the middle of the night (in order to interact with people) if he had a cold.

    Something doesn’t smell right.

It gives me major “Beto air drumming in the Whataburger drive through” vibes.
He obviously didn't have a cold. That was the only way they could try to spin his horrible debate performance.

I actually feel sorry for Biden. I don't like him politically, but his family should be ashamed of themselves for not convincing him he shouldn't run again.

The Democrats and media have been lying to us for 3.5 years about Bidens condition although we could see it. He looked so bad that even his fans in the media couldn't lie anymore about his condition.
