There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

Not supporting a coalition government is tantamount to supporting extremists.
I agree. McCarthy refused a simple rule change demanded by moderate dems after he reneged on a few deals with the dems. To save his job and stabilize the house, no less! I’d say that’s supporting extremism. And he continues to blast the dems.

It is up to the “sane” republicans if there are any to step up. Even at the risk of their jobs. dems have been sending overture since the McCarthy vote. This is on them.

And I really don’t even know how this coalition/temporary speakership will work. Dems cannot possibly vote present as there simply aren’t enough republicans to vote for mchenry or any other who’ll compromise. I don’t know the history, so this seems unprecedented.

I think there may be some support from Democrats because it would allow McHenry to have the power to move legislation to vote. The House is paralyzed right now and the longer it drags, the more collateral damage there can be.

We can't expect pragmatism from some Republicans and not any Democrats.

Here is a list of Republicans that have voted at least 20% of the time with Biden and whose districts voted for Biden. For reference McCarthy voted with Biden 16.6%, and Jordan 5.4%, so any of these are improvements...

It's likely a fantasy, but it would be a wild and welcome turn of events to see one of the impeachment votes get rewarded with Speaker . . . signaling a new coalition, pragmatic, anti-Trump government. It would not only be a turn in the name of justice but would be a major signal to the other members who align with the Trump wing only in self-preservation that they don't have to live like that anymore.

But it isn't going to happen, I don't think. Trump is so much weaker now but they continue to prop him up - acquiescing to a power he probably doesn't even have anymore.
It is a fantasy! A noble fantasy, but a fantasy nonetheless. Are any of those guys in Republican leadership or, at least, hold committee Chairs? McCarthy was canned because he feigned working with Democrats, how would a Republican Speaker even govern when there are members of his party that are staunchly against participating in a coalition government?

    Case & point:
Still, such a move would almost certainly trigger a conservative freakout, the report added.

One of those conservatives, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, fumed over the plan on Wednesday, arguing that it “represents an unforgivable step to coalition government & likely decimation in 2024.”
The Democrats cannot make the R's want to govern, that has to come from within and I just don't see that from the Republicans yet.

To be fair, there are some republicans willing to reach out to dems it appears. The problem is this system of reprisal that newt setup for repubs, as you point out. How comfortable are they to stand against it is the question. Currently zero.

But a coalition would likely include rule changes to ousting the speaker, and probably how bills will come to the floor…that means the minority leader has a say along with the speaker and maj leader.

WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Hardline conservative Jim Jordan will suspend his bid to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and back Republican Patrick McHenry to fill the role on a temporary basis, media outlets reported on Thursday.

The House has been without a leader for more than two weeks, and Jordan has twice failed to secure the 217 votes needed to claim the speaker's gavel as he has faced opposition from Democrats and more than 20 of his fellow Republicans.

Jordan declined to comment as he entered a closed-door meeting with other Republicans.

And apparently, there are even more idiots in the Republican conference who are against the McHenry resolution, some because Jordan is supporting it (thinking it will give him time to secure votes).

Jordan wants it to fail. He doesn't care, at all. If supporting it means it fails, he gets what he wanted.

If McHenry is acceptable enough - which I don't know - I think the Democrats should support him to show that they can be the grown-ups at the table and are willing to do what's in the best interest of the country.. juxtaposed to what's happening with the Republicans right now.

Why do they have to be in leadership or a committee chair? There were several votes for people that aren't even in Congress! If it has to be someone in leadership, then Tom Cole would be a decent choice, since he has voted with Biden 28.3% of the time, but he is a very red district, so he'd probably lose re-election if he worked in a bi-partisan manner. However, I don't think it has to be anyone in leadership, as long as he has enough support in the House.

A coalition government wouldn't need a majority of Republicans. It just needs a majority period. There are enough Democrats that would vote with the few remaining Republicans to allow governance. If Democrats can support McHenry, who has only voted along with Biden about 15% of the time, then they can certainly get behind someone like Valadao, that voted to impeach Trump and has voted with Biden 30% of the time. He is in a safely blue open primary district, so he would be able to work with Democrats without fearing losing his seat. McHenry will face a lot of pressure from his very red district. Valadao has already gotten a vote for speaker, so he has support from at least 1 other Republican, and I bet there are many more that would support him.

Well, Jeffries has already had positive things to say about McHenry. So if Jeffries thinks he's acceptable enough, I can live with that.
