Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/17/sup...y-that-refuses-to-work-with-lgbt-couples.html

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

it is a detriment because she is an originalist? I get you want only RGBs and other progressive on the court, as I want conservatives on the court, but to label those you disagree with as someone who lacks objectivity, well, that simply lacks objectivity.
You continually misrepresent my political leans time and again despite all of my posts to the contrary. Recent example: I've repeatedly condemned the violence associated with the Floyd protests. Meanwhile, I recall you glibly quipping that the events of January 6th were a good thing vis-a-vis a warning to the political class (or similar words to those effect). You also continually defend and absolve Trump of any wrongdoing or harm to this country despite a mountain of objective evidence to the contrary. Your actions speak louder than your disclaimers. You are functionally an authoritarian that is only concerned about his own personal political and religious beliefs. I am not.

On point, it would be best if the Court was full of political moderates and certainly those who don't confirm their religious bias in writing shorty before their nomination and confirmation. Such people exist, but they generally don't seek political patronage which is what it takes to get a federal judicial nomination these days. Also, as I've proposed on at least a couple of instances on this board, the Constitution should be amended to increase the number of Senatorial votes required to confirm a judge to a two-thirds majority. This will basically guarantee the judiciary is stocked with moderates.

This is not the kind of thing I pay attention to but I would guess it's primarily about acceptance, both on her part and ours, and she (below) seems pretty harmless to me.

Sorry man, that is child abuse. That child is 8 years old and paraded around like a burlesque act. The fact you think our society needs to accept that is just kind of gross.

Sorry if I misrepresent your political leans time and time again. To be fair, it happens all the time on this board and not just you.

And yes to everything you said about me. I do think those things.

On the court full of moderates, that will never happen. Might be a good thing, but impossible in our current political environment. Each side is now evil and wants to destroy the country according to the other side. What about religious judges, should they be dismissed out of hand because of their religious beliefs?

I said acceptance in terms of accepting drag/transvestites. Relax dude, that boy isn't hurting anyone including her/himself. If it's that important for him to dress up like a girl, let him. It has nothing to do with child abuse. He WANTS to do it.

    @Farb

What is your opinion of child beauty pagents?

    Are they child abuse?
    Hey! welcome back my friend.

Good question and I would lean toward a yes on that one. The only ting that is debatable is one is highlighting/exaggerating the natural beauty of a child while the other is nothing more than cosplay. But both are child abuse for the sake of some weird fulfillment from their handlers.

How is it any different than the types of shows that Jon Benet Ramsey participated in?

I actually am sort of in agreement here - I wouldn’t push my child to do either one - the “talent” shows that Jon Benet did or a drag show. But if my child was truly desperate to be in show business and loved it, I might reconsider. I don’t know.

I certainly wouldn’t claim this is child abuse, or have the parents investigated by CPS like they do in Texas though.

That it will never happen -- and I know it won't -- just means this country will eventually crumble. As far as religious judges, there are those who are religious and there are those whose religion is their sole driving force that subsumes anything and everything else... including their takes on the Constitution that are purportedly based on Originalism.

What about women's gymnastics? How young do they start? Who's running their training? It seems to me that abuse has been somewhat rampant. I haven't seen the right talking about shutting that down because of child abuse.

Edit to add: My sister was 5'8" in the 6th/7th grade and a very good swimmer. The Harvard swimming coach saw her compete and approached my parents about training her. He told them that she could very well become an Olympic swimmer. My parents said no. Too much time away from normal life.

Well Pageant is the root of pageantry which is basically performing auspiciously. So I would argue that a girls’ beauty pageant and a drag dress up show are the same thing without the judging, winners and losers.

End of the day, as long as those kids are there because they want to be and they are dressing up and performing because they want to, then I applaud them for having the guts to get on stage and perform solo. That shirt is terrifying.

While we are on our longest streak of agreeing (once), I am going to extend it and completely agree that dressing kids up to judge them against other dolled up little girls is weird. Creepy even.

But abuse? Only if the kid is being forced to be involved. But I would say that about anything.

No I don’t know enough about this case to know for sure, but as cuddle noted, there are always facts conveniently left out. That’s the entire MO - exaggerate, (they will lie if they have to), get on the board by fear mongering and then wreck the school system. They will censor books, target LBGTQ for harassment and try to get people fired, etc. It’s just like McCarthyism was during the Red Scare. They will ruin people‘s lives over this. For nothing.
At a recent Charlotte board meeting, a member of the Mecklenburg chapter of Moms for Liberty read some lines from the book, "This Book is Gay." She claimed the book was found by a student in a 7th grade classroom.

The book is described by its publisher as a bestselling young adult non-fiction book on sexuality and gender.

The principal of the school, Collinswood Language Academy, told parents in a written note that the book was part of the teacher’s personal library that is housed in an off-limits section of the classroom.

"During the teacher’s absence, the book was removed from the teacher’s personal space and placed in the in-classroom student library, resulting in an unintended circulation of the book," the principal's note explains.

"Any teacher that puts material like this on his or her bookshelf is either a bad teacher or a pedophile who grooms children," Christy Wade, a member of Moms for Liberty, said to school board members.

Internal emails, requested by the Mecklenburg County Chapter of Moms for Liberty, show at one time the book was on a “book tasting assignment" at Jay M. Robinson Middle School.

Of course the first thing that should be shut down due to child abuse is the Catholic church. In fact I'd shut down all Sunday Schools. Talk about grooming. "Hey kid, come down to the basement floor with me and I'll force-feed you some fairytales".

    "USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to navigationJump to search
The USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal relates to the sexual abuse of gymnasts—primarily minors at the time of the abuse—over two decades in the United States, starting in the late 1990s. More than 368 people alleged that they were sexually assaulted "by gym owners, coaches, and staff working for gymnastics programs across the country".[1][2] Longtime USA Gymnastics (USAG) national team doctor Larry Nassarwas specifically named in hundreds of lawsuits filed by athletes who said that Nassar engaged in sexual abuse for at least 14 years under the pretense of providing medical treatment. Since the scandal was first reported by The Indianapolis Star in September 2016, more than 265 women,[3] including former USAG national team members Jessica Howard, Jamie Dantzscher, Morgan White, Jeanette Antolin, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Maggie Nichols, Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, Jordyn Wieber, Sabrina Vega, Ashton Locklear, Kyla Ross, Madison Kocian, Amanda Jetter, Tasha Schwikert, Mattie Larson, Bailie Key, Kennedy Baker, Alyssa Baumann, and Terin Humphrey have accused Nassar of sexually assaulting them. It is considered the largest sexual abuse scandal in sports history"

Do you think any teacher who has that book in their classroom is a “groomer”?

Do you think the teacher is lying? Because the book “at one time” appeared on a suggested list for a different school?

look, you can be part of this McCarthy-ism if you want, but you can never be considered a libertarian again. This is exactly like the McCarthy witch hunts, and the childcare Satan panic. How many lives were ruined because of those? This is just a way to demonize people and ruin their lives. Moms For Liberty is an evil organization.

Yup, the whopper of all child abuse stories….I really don’t take anything most Catholics have to say seriously about child abuse …..

Tim Minchin had something to say about this that might not be quite appropriate to share...

"OKAY, GROOMER" is the new "OKAY, BOOMER" -- mindlessly spammed by the right its lost any significance. I'm pretty sure I understood the concept of gay people when I was in 7th grade. Can't say it persuaded me to be anything other than a heterosexual because I like woman and it is what it is. I'm not sure why people think reading a book is going to rewire a kid's sexuality.

Edited to add: Lol @ the irony of the group name "Moms for Liberty."
