    I will admit, I didn't know anything about these these strings of attacks and the murder of elderly Asian American out west. Really disturbing. In most cases, they have caught sub human scum that have committed these crimes.
    In the case of the murder of Ratanapakdee, I sincerely hope the death penalty will be sought, although that is not possible in the state of CA.

    No, it does NOT supply context. It is an individual example. It is NOT indicative of a general rise of Anti-Asian feeling due to COVID. Tell me, why have hate crimes against Jews bloomed in New York and Los Angeles over the last 12 months ?
    Because of a general increase in white nationalism in America over the last four years?

    And the fact that unless you are their type of White Nationalist they don't discriminate who they discriminate against?

    They literally painted King Flu on the windows. Where did that come from?

    Swine Flu didn't originate in the USA ? It was first identified in Mexico ?
    Where did the 2009 H1N1 flu virus come from?
    The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (referred to as “swine flu” early on) was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009.”

    There is conflicting data that says it originated in Mexico and the US as well; afaicfo, some say the first genetically tested case in humans was from Mexico, but that it was likely circulating in Mexico and the US and not yet identified as such. The two first outbreak communities had no contact with each other, and the main pandemic response came from the US community and not the Mexican one.

    It's pretty clear that rhetoric during the pandemic is driving most of this increase
    ================================================

    Discrimination against Asian Americans has climbed significantly during the pandemic.

    The numbers are startling when you see them. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 31% of Asian Americans have reported having experienced discrimination since the beginning of the pandemic.

    It also shows nearly 40% of U.S. adults say it is more common now for people to express racist views about Asians than it was before the pandemic began................

    Not a good look for the Capt. whose press conference remarks were beyond cringe worthy...

    That's worrying. But I'd challenge the phrase "since the beginning of the pandemic", suggesting a causal relationship between the two that had previously not existed. I suspect, however, that this is just a recent manifestation of a long-standing pattern of racism and hostility in the USA

    That's worrying.
    Should've stopped there.

    But I'd challenge the phrase "since the beginning of the pandemic",
    It's being used there to literally refer to the period of time marked by the beginning of the pandemic. Literally. There's nothing to challenge there.

    suggesting a causal relationship between the two that had previously not existed.
    There very obviously is a causal relationship between Covid-19 and Covid-19 driven prejudice and racism that didn't previously exist, because Covid-19 didn't previously exist.

    This is like seeing people throwing gasoline on an already burning fire and saying, "Fires are terrible, but it's not like they started completely new fires, is it."

    Seriously, what are you doing here? You apparently agree that it's bad, but your entire focus here seems to be to spit into the wind in a vain attempt to shift blame away from the people who've made it worse.

    Why? Do your hands smell of gasoline or something?

    I like her response to the whole 'it's just joke'
    ===============================

    Bruce Lee's daughter, actor and producer Shannon Lee, is condemning violence against Asians after the horrific Atlanta shootings Tuesday that claimed the lives of eight people, six of them Asian women.

    Lee also denounced hateful rhetoric regarding the coronavirus, including "kung flu," a term former President Donald Trump repeatedly used................

    This is like last year during the Floyd protests where some cops said all the right "we're with you" "there is no place for racism" etc., even knelt right alongside protestors but had racist stuff in their own social media
    =================================

    A photo allegedly posted by Capt. Jay Baker, a public information officer at the Cherokee County, Georgia, Sheriff's Office, shows shirts with a racist and anti-Asian message about Covid-19.

    "Covid 19 imported virus from Chy-na," the racist shirt in the photo posted April 2, 2020, reads.

    Although the account that posted it has been deleted, CNN was able to access the photos through a cached copy. The name on the Facebook account matches Jay Baker, and it claims that the individual is an employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's office.

    The Daily Beast was first to report on the racist shirt photo. They also reported the account posted photos of Baker in uniform, with his name tag visible.

    When contacted by CNN about the post, Baker told CNN, "No additional comment."

    "Love my shirt," the photo caption of the shirt reads. It goes on to encourage others to buy their own shirts saying, "get yours while they last." CNN reached out to the store selling the shirts, but did not immediately receive a response............

    What am I doing here ? I'm suggesting that this 'violence against Asians' theme is a lot less than it appears, and is part of a long record of hate incidents against Asians in the USA that is NOTHING to do with COVID-19. In a relative handful of cases, the victims have reported a 'covid' theme, and I'm sure it is true. But I'm suggesting that is just a 'choice of insults' on behalf of people who already have an irrational hatred of 'Asians'.

    Of course, I could be wrong ? But the crime numbers don't show a huge increase in attacks on Asians, compared to the increase on attacks on other minority groups ?

    You're missing the point.

    It's self-evident that you've taken it upon yourself to attempt to diminish and deny not only what basic reason should tell you (that repeatedly and deliberately attributing the effects of an ongoing pandemic, that has killed millions of people worldwide and devastated lives, to a particular group of people increases animosity towards those people), but also what we're being told by Asians themselves, and what is reflected in the reported hate crimes and the changing nature of those crimes.

    And apparently you're now willing, in the face of assaults and even murders, to do this to the extent that you'll put 'violence against Asians' in quotes and call it a 'theme'.

    I'm asking why you would decide to spend your time doing something that is both plainly absurd and increasingly, to be polite, unpleasant.

    And you haven't addressed that. The most you've done is mention increases on attacks on other minority groups, but either you think that if other people are experiencing rises in hate crimes for other reasons, Asians can't be experiencing a rise in hate crimes due to repeatedly and wrongly having Covid-19 attributed to them, which is so clearly illogical it really shouldn't need to be pointed out, or you're under the confused notion that the best way to address those hate crimes against other groups is not to talk about them in their own right, but to instead diminish what's happening to Asians, in which case, no. No, it isn't. Don't do that.

    Here’s your “why” @RobF. Because if he admits that there has been a rise in violence against Asians due to COVID-19, then there’s a direct line from that admission of responsibility to Donald Trump’s rhetoric. It’s impossible to shield Trump from blame if you admit that there’s been a rise in anti-Asian sentiment since the pandemic began.

    The better question is why someone from GB would be so vested in protecting Donald Trump.

    And clearly you haven't read ANY of the information I supplied in my previous (ish) post.
    Hate crimes HAVE increased in New York and Los Angeles (amongst others). By 24 in 2019-2020 in New York, and 8 in Los Angeles. This is HARDLY a sign of a rampant epidemic of hate. The numbers are MINISCULE.

    And if this is a result of hatred caused by COVID-19, I would - ONCE MORE - ask you to explain the significant increase (against a MUCH larger background count) of hate crimes against Jews in those cities ?

    Absurd ? Unpleasant ? But TRUE. It is not ME that is 'diminishing' these figures; it is elements of the media who are trying to stir up a bush-fire.
