More than a month after House Republicans surprised Washington by advancing their framework for Trump’s $4.5 trillion in tax breaks and $2 trillion in spending cuts, Senate Republicans voted Thursday to start working on their version. The largely party-line vote, 52-48, sets the stage for a potential Senate all-nighter Friday spilling into the weekend.

That's what you have been told all your life., but that's not the whole story.

On their own, China didn't just open (and this is a small sample of U.S. corporations) Apple, GM, Ray-Ban, Nike, Dell, Levi Strauss, Mattel, Converse, Xbox, Hewlett-Packard, Gap, L.L. Bean, Hanes, Boeing, Caterpillar factories. Those corporations decided to move their manufacturing and the jobs that came with it to China on their own.

You don't have to hear about it. Again, go look at BYD's Yangwang U series, and tell me who the Chinese stole those innovations from.

Our spending on the military is self-inflicted, in more than one way.

Our system of government seems to be in danger all on its own too.
I’m appreciating your clarity on these matters. 😇

The Rivendell I live in is just in my mind from a story I’ve read repeatedly since childhood. 😁
I've enjoyed those stories as well.

How's Gandalf been getting along? And the next question is, is he going to bring fireworks for the 4th?

You are correct. Corporate greed has hurt America, but it has also helped more on balance. The US has done many things that are no longer acceptable since WW2. I’m not condoning any of that. I’m just saying that China has been practicing these unacceptable practices for the last few decades, and today they are our greatest threat. Other countries may also employ these practices, but they are less of a threat.
Greatest threat to what, exactly? Economic dominance? Global influence? Innovation?

If China is out-innovating the U.S. right now, that says more about the state of American policy and priorities than about China’s supposed threat. As I mentioned earlier, U.S. education and innovation have been stagnating. Biden gave it a shot of CPR with investments in renewable energy and tech, but many of those initiatives have since been gutted by Trump.

The current Trump administration has also made it significantly harder for working-class students to access higher education. That shrinks the future pool of entrepreneurs and innovators—the very people needed to compete globally. Blaming China might be politically convenient, but it ignores the internal decay of America’s ability to nurture talent and drive progress."

Actually I live in a climate and political hell hole so rely on distraction frequently…hard to believe when I first lived here (Tejas) before the infection, the State was controlled by Democrats… moved away for 30 years, a spousal compromise brought me back kicking and screaming… 😐

I hear you, I've been to Tejas during summer. And indeed a political hell hole it has become.

Since you live in a place of fantasy use your magic staff and bring Moly Ivens back. I miss her.

If she were around now the sharp saw she had "If you put Trump's brain in a bumblebee, it would fly backwards" would be flying around backwards.

You've got to watch this, Hakeem Jeffries is within 10 minutes of setting a new record for the longest floor speech ever. He needs to go for 8 hours 33 minutes to do it.

On edit: he did it, and he's still going.

The new record is 8 hours 44 minutes 25 seconds.

Other than setting a record, what did it accomplish? Simply delayed the inevitable.

This is honestly great. I'm still in the camp of replacing the entire current Dem leadership, but thank you for finally showing some fight guys. I don't care if it's only symbolic.

I get you. Ohio was a normal state at one time. It has become Ohio-bama. Gerrymandered by Republicans to hell and back. Threw out Sherrod Brown for Bernie “Wage Thief” Moreno.

Read a bit about innovation in China. Can’t remember the source but the author was noting that there are a lot of patents done in China that not only don’t become anything commercialized, they could never be commercialized. The author also said that much of the high tech manufacturing done there relies on equipment and technology from elsewhere.

    I found it interesting.

Joe, I don't remember i's been 4 years, what was you comment when this happened, was it upside down from what it is now?

"On November 2021, McCarthy used his marathon remarks to delay a vote on then-President Joe Biden’s plan to dramatically expand the social safety net. The sweeping $1.9 trillion economic legislation was eventually passed later that morning. Trump issued a statement at the time praising McCarthy for his speech."

The difference between the two is about 10 minutes.

I'm no fan of the OBBB, but I do enjoy pointing out some hypocrisy

I don’t recall that I commented Sam TBH. My comment then would be the same as it is today. Other than the symbolism, I don’t see what was accomplished. Nobody’s mind was changed. Did it change any votes when McCarthy did it? Did it further his political career? I dunno.

What did you think back then?

I think McCarthy was later stabbed in the back by his own.

Was like Caesar, except that Caesar was stabbed many times all around.
