Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

Today, Trump announced Boeing won the contract for the new Next Gen Fighter.

Lockheed Martin was the developer/mfg of the f35 ( most recent nexgen fighter ) that is CURRENTLY producing for sales to allies. ( and prior F22 Raptor )

one other nugget- Lockheed has also been lambasted for its F35 by none other than Elon Musk.

Wanna guess what OTHER contracts Lockheed vying for? Thats right, space rockets.
ICYMI, he wants this fighter to be called the F-47. Such a forking douche bag.

A string of high-profile arrests and detentions of travellers is likely to cause a major downturn in tourism to the US, with latest figures already showing a serious drop-off, tourist experts said.

Several western travellers have recently been rejected at the US border on increasingly flimsy grounds under Donald Trump’s immigrationcrackdown, some of them shackled and held in detention centers in poor conditions for weeks.

Germany updated travel guidance for travelling to the US, warning that breaking entry rules could lead not just to a rejection as before, but arrest or even detention.

Three German citizens have been held for prolonged periods despite apparently having committed no crime nor any obvious violation of US visa or immigration rules – including one US green card holder who was detained at Boston’s Logan airport.

The UK Foreign Office, too, has bolstered its advice to warn of a risk of arrest after Becky Burke, a tourist from Wales who had been backpacking across America, was stopped at the border with Canada and held for three weeks in a detention facility.

Last week members of the UK Subs, a British punk band, were denied entry and detained after they landed at Los Angeles international airport.

Even before the most recent spate of detentions, forecast visits to the country this year had been revised downward from a projected 5% rise to a 9% decrease by Tourism Economics, an industry monitoring group, which cited “polarising Trump Administration policies and rhetoric”, particularly around tariffs.

It predicted that the drop-off would lead to a $64bn shortfall in the US tourist trade.

“There’s been a dramatic shift in our outlook,” said Adam Sacks, the president of Tourism Economics, told the Washington Post. “You’re looking at a much weaker economic engine than what otherwise would’ve been, not just because of tariffs, but the rhetoric and condescending tone around it.”

The decline has been most pronounced from neighbouring Canada, which Trump has menaced with crippling tariffs and repeatedly threatened to annex outright.

The number of Canadians returning by road from the US fell by 23% in February, year on year, while air traffic fell 13% on a year earlier, according to Canadian government statistics.………

Senior tax officials are bracing for a sharp drop in revenue collected this spring, as an increasing number of individuals and businesses spurn filing their taxes or attempt to skip paying balances owed to the Internal Revenue Service, according to three people with knowledge of tax projections.

Treasury Department and IRS officials are predicting a decrease of more than 10 percent in tax receipts by the April 15 deadline compared with 2024, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share nonpublic data. That would amount to more than $500 billion in lost federal revenue; the IRS collected $5.1 trillion last year. For context, the U.S. government spent $825 billion on the Defense Department in fiscal 2024…….

The administration has moved to fire nearly 20,000 agency employees, specifically targeting new hires in taxpayer services and enforcement divisions. It’s already dismissed more than 11,000 workers at the agency, though some of their statuses are unclear pending fast-moving court cases.

The IRS has dropped investigations of high-value corporations and taxpayers, according to several agency employees involved in those inquiries, because it’s had to triage resources to keep internal systems operating. Two agency commissioners have resigned since Trump took office. The IRS’s head of compliance, Heather Maloy, stepped down effective Friday.…….

Tax revenue could drop by 10 percent amid turmoil at IRS

A small town in Maine has found itself inadvertently at the mercy of Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war with Canada - and it’s the parking that is suffering.

The town of York initially ordered 17 kiosks from MacKay Meters, a Quebec-based company, but has been forced to reduce the order to 13 due to the 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports threatened by the president. The result of the tariffs is a $20,000 increase in the cost of each kiosk.

Last week, a White House spokesperson confirmed the 25 percent tax on all steel and aluminum “for Canada and all of our other trading partners” would be implemented without exception, though Trump backtracked on his vow that the levy would be raised to 50 percent.

In Maine, the town is already feeling the squeeze that economists warned would come with Trump’s tariffs. Goods such as toys, lumber, syrup, cars, and home-building supplies are all at the mercy of price hikes thanks to tariffs.

In York, it's their efforts to create revenue that first got hit.

Foster’s Daily Democrat reported that assistant town Manager Kathryn Lagasse previously informed the town’s Selectboard that the estimated costs for the meter order would increase by $18,469 overall if the tariffs were implemented.

“I’m aware that the tariff on general imports has been delayed for at least 30 days,” Lagasse told the Selectboard on March 10, per the Daily Democrat. “After speaking with our representatives at MacKay, they’re not confident that we won’t face some type of increase.”…….

Well, were.

Trump today.

From Election day til today- Lockheed Martin stock.

We always sell lesser grades of our attack aircraft to allies. Honestly, for the reason he gives. It would just be said more diplomatically.

Earlier there was a note that markets unsurprisingly respond well to predictability. Seems like the Tariffs won't be as broadly applied, but we shall see.

25% tariff

Mentions Honda building new plant in Indiana ( been saying this since March 5 Address to Nation )

Honda has refuted this 3 weeks ago- Trump keeps pushing this lie

The auto tarrif is so stupid. Japanese cars are popular well made, and a solid value. Also, the big 3 US car makers have some manufacturing in Mexico and Canada. This is going to jack up prices more, and cars/trucks are already stupid expensive.
