Biden and Trump agree to 2 presidential debates, in June and in September

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to hold two campaign debates, on June 27 hosted by CNN and on Sept. 10 hosted by ABC.

As recently as Wednesday morning, Trump expressed his desire for a large live audience for his debates with Biden.

“I would strongly recommend more than two debates and, for excitement purposes, a very large venue, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds - That’s only because he doesn’t get them,” Trump said. “Just tell me when, I’ll be there.”

Trump has been pushing for more debates and earlier debates, arguing voters should be able to see the two men face off well before early voting begins in September. He has repeatedly said he will debate Biden “anytime, anywhere, any place,” even proposing the two men face off outside the Manhattan courthouse where he is currently on criminal trial in a hush money case. He also has been taunting Biden with an empty lectern at some of his rallies.

trump will make crazy demands and when not met he will use that as an excuse to not debate. he likes to brag about to look tough but like testifying in his trial he knows it will be stupid.

I will be shocked if Trump actually does the debates, especially because there will be no audience to shout down Biden, and the candidates’ mikes will be cut off when it’s not their turn to speak. So he won’t be able to talk over his opponent.

exactly. he will come up with conditions he has to have that are not realistic then when they are not allowed he will use that as an excuse to not have the debate.

Yeah, he may go through with it. They’ve been making noises like they want to back out, but nothing concrete. Then again, he’s famous for just not making up his mind about stuff. We used to hear that he would tell one staffer one thing, then tell the next one the exact opposite. I just read recently that he didn’t even make the decision to pick Pence, someone on his staff did and just introduced Pence to Trump as his VP. He was just dithering about, and finally someone made the pick for him. The fact that the cult thinks he is some sort of strong person has always baffled the shirt outta me.

I think part of that is because the challenger has usually just gone through a gauntlet of primary debates and is already battle tested, Trump hasn’t which is unusual

Also the challenger is attacking the incumbent on his administration’s record and what has or has not been done and the incumbent is on the defensive

Trump will have his own administration’s record to defend (literally with his convictions) and that is also unusual

His base doesn't need a debate.

This is about him attracting the moderate and independents. I suspect the "training" he is undergoing is about keeping on topic. Don't waver and get in the mud. (As much as he wants to). I think the muting of mic will actually benefit him.

But if Biden gets under his skin, he may very well go off script and revert to just pandering to his base.

I pity the people trying to get him to stay on topic. I don’t think they have a snowball’s chance of that.

He absolutely feeds of the energy of a crowd, but that energy is what leads him off track and ad libbing

No crowd may keep him more subdued but more likely to stay on topic

I expect them to back out the day before or later to screw CNN and leave them scrambling to fill the prime time spot. CNN is trying so hard to be neutral, so I don't think they'd give the time to Biden on his own.

I expect the excuse from Trump to be something along the lines of, "I really wanted to debate, but my advisors wouldn't let me do it. I fought with them to do it, but they wouldn't let me. They said CNN had rigged the debate against me and were going to be unfair to me and twist everything to make me look bad. So we decided not to do it."

It's not a prediction, it's just what I expect. I think what Trump's advisors are going to be most concerned about is Trump losing his cool because he won't be able to rant over Biden due to his mic being off.

That's going to make Trump feel like it makes him seem weak and out of control, so he's going to either try to yell over Biden from his own podium or he's going to walk over to Biden's to try to talk into Biden's mic.

Trump has zero ability to maintain his composure anytime he doesn't feel like he's the big boy in charge, except when with Putin. For some reason, Putin is the only person that I've ever seen Trump kowtow to.
