I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I wonder if she finds it "odd" that 5 of the 6 states with the highest death rates of Covid are led by Democrats.

Both have logical explanations. The blue states with the highest death rates experienced their largest outbreaks at the beginning of the American episode of the pandemic - because they are coastal with large urban centers where people traveled internationally and imported the virus where it then spread quickly in the population centers. And mortality was higher then because the disease was novel and treatment knowledge was limited.

Republican politicians have fared worse with Covid than Democrats because they either believe or have adopted the belief that Covid risk is exaggerated and/or that sensible mitigation measures like masks don’t work or make them look weak. Reduced mitigation practice results in enhanced risk. This ain’t rock science.

I am not sure why international travel in large population centers necessarily would explain the rates. Miami and L.A. are both coastal and have a great deal of international travel. As do other cities in their respective states. Yet Florida has roughly 1/3 the death rate of New York and of New Jersey while California (governed by a Democratic governor, of course) has leass than a 1/4 the death rate of New York and New Jersey. Same can be said for Texas. I mean I know you do not think all international travel came through NY and NJ airports.

Regardless - my real point is not to blame anyone for covid-19 deaths or for getting the virus. I really do not blame Cuomo or anyone else, Republican or Democrat - although I do think Trump failed in his leadership on the topic. But I really hate the politicization of the virus. Counting the number of cases Republicans have vs. Democrats just seems silly and counter-productive. And I only pointed to the high rates in Democratic-governor states to make that point, although it was, admittedly, not the best way to do so.

Without going into great detail. A different, more deadly strain come to the east coast from Europe. The strain that came to the west coast from Asia wasn't as deadly. The difference in strains was the primary cause of the difference in mortality rates throughout the country.

This is a good chart to help you evaluate how risky an activity may be.

So....not all Republicans ignore wearing masks but most people ignoring wearing a mask are Republicans, essentially.

Changing issues within CV-19... is it safe to assume any further stimulus aid / unemployment aid is dead in the water now?
The Democrats need to push it now. If the Republicans say that they can't have such discussions in this uncertain time then the Democrats can say the same thing about the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, all that will do is again point out Republican hypocrisy, which apparently is irrelevant to Republican decision-making at this time.
