This is gaining momentum, pretty fast, it might be good to keep track of this movement.

This thread is from a thoughtful conservative that I follow on Twitter, and I generally enjoy seeing his takes:

Its a whole thread, so you will have to click on it to see the rest of his posts. I don’t know how to post the entire thread.

Has he ever endorsed someone other than the R candidate? When I think of influential conservative voices in the media (that are rooted in reality, of course) George Will is the first to come to mind so this is a pretty big deal. Especially for those who've been following him for a long time.

He has been very critical of Trump since Trump first mounted a serious campaign. He thinks that Trump is unqualified and unfit for office - and he had that opinion in 2015-16, and it has only been confirmed in his view.

People like him and Conway are responsible for the actual conservatives who "gave Trump a chance" voting for Biden and this endorsement will probably influence a lot of people. I remember him endorsing (or maybe just not endorsing the republican candidate) democrats in 2018 and just saw a Breitbart piece from 2016 that said he endorsed Clinton. (I didn't click the link, just read the headline...I can't bring myself to go to that site.)

Man, I think we're past the point where someone like Will endorsing Biden makes much of a difference.. maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see it.

I can see why you'd say that. I think every past living president and the estate of some dead ones speaking out against him will have much more of an impact on actual conservatives than anyone in the media will have.

I think that may have some small impact, but I I think more than anyone or anything the person who can damage Trump the most when they speak out is... Trump himself.

Which is probably true of Biden as well, honestly.. but I don't think Trump's going to hide out in the same way that Biden has and will likely continue to do.

Yeah. I mean you have the Reagan Foundation saying "don't use Ron's name in your campaign." That says a lot.

This is not a criticism of George Will, but he's an establishment conservative and very few of those have ever supported Trump unless they are in Congress. Establishment Republicans announcing that they still don't support Trump probably doesn't change much. I think it all comes down to the independents for Trump to have any chance of winning.

I agree that people who would have been considered mainstream Republicans 20 years ago are not particularly enamored with Trump’s brand of Republicanism. Will represents the brand of conservatism that is grounded in fundamental principles rather than policy points of view. It is those people, who I characterize as “true conservatives” that don’t see Trump as conservative at all. He never talks about the principles of conservatism or the rationale behind policy proposals and to those of us who have a foundation in principled conservatism, it reveals Trump’s lack of a conservative foundation or mindset. It is not difficult for my type of conservative to reject Trump’s populism or even the Republican Party’s abandonment of many conservative principles.

So I think you are correct that Will’s brand of conservative, whether they are called establishment or mainstream, are unlikely to consider voting for Trump. In the last election, many chose to vote third party as I did, but the prospects of a second Trump term won’t allow for that luxury this year. I believe most will vote Democrat for president for the first time in their lives, as I will. Independent voters would have to swing heavily in Trump’s favor for him to win and I can’t envision that happening, barring a total meltdown on the part of Biden.

Antifa loving, socialist George Will has a nice ring to it.

what say you all about the fact the Reagan’s family wants no part of him either?

I think you’ve gone too far in the other direction for ol’ George. Will would not align himself with either of those things, but would also be critical of libertarianism and a whole lot of other isms. I love the fact that Reagan’s family wants to distance themselves and Ronald Reagan’s name from Trump. Reagan is probably spinning in his grave every time Trump refers to himself as a conservative.

It looks like it's about to get real, if this is true. I can only imagine the tweet storm if these claims are validated. I guess we will see it the Cory Gardners of the Senate start doing so.

So tell me, what is the difference between an "establishment conservative" and whatever it is that passes for GOP values these days?

I graduated from high school during the Reagan administration, supported him and Bush 1, and registered Republican when I was old enough to vote. George Will was one of my favorite columnists.

The GOP today is unrecognizable to me. Everything I thought it stood for (personal liberty, anti-totalitarianism, free markets, fiscal restraint, strong national defense) has turned out to be largely lip service, when its true platform is basically white grievance and (relatedly) evangelical grievance.

So George Will is an "establishment conservative." Define the difference between him and you (assuming you don't define yourself that way).
