Why is Cristoforo Colombo still celebrated?
He was a flaming racist and slave trader who didn't discover shirt. What's there to celebrate?

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia City Council member and Italian American groups are suing the mayor's administration in federal court over the decision to change the name of city's Columbus Day holiday to Indigenous Peoples' Day.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday argues that while both groups deserve recognition, Mayor Jim Kenney “may not take action that discriminates against Italian Americans to exalt another ethnic group in its place,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The plaintiffs, who include Councilman Mark Squilla, allege that Kenney’s recent executive order renaming the October holiday fits a pattern of discrimination by the mayor against his Italian American constituents, who they say should be designated a protected class..........

Erasing Columbus from history will not do a thing for the disenfranchised people of America. The guy has been dead for over five centuries. This sort of tribalism is useless feel good stuff guys. Furthermore, it is useless to judge the ancient past with a 21st century mindset. How about erasing someone that is still alive and causing havoc right now?

So we should keep historical inaccuracies intact so we can still have sales on towels?
getting rid of Columbus day isn't erasing him from history. that's a bold jump you are making.
Give one reason why Columbus day should be a federal holiday?

Someone many years ago thought it would be a nice idea to have Columbus Day. It is that simple! Columbus has been dead for over five centuries. There are a couple of letters he wrote expressing how he felt about the indigenous people. Other than that the Columbus thing may be an exaggerated story. By the late 1400s he fell out of favor with the Spanish crown and died in 1506. The history always changes over the centuries. The Columbus thing has zero importance guys. Unless we are into the us versus them mindset.
As for the Italians complaining-------------who cares! It is possible Columbus was a Spaniard rather than Italian. Why would the Queen of Spain hire a foreigner for this expedition?

exactly, who really cares about Columbus? The republicans who voted against the Juneteenth holiday, said they did so because it would cost too much money paying federal workers being off an extra day. Then get rid of Columbus day that has zero significance for this country. problem solved.

As Columbus Day gives way to “fall break” and drops off many workers’ calendars altogether, it has become easy to overlook a perennial teaching moment. When Christopher Columbus does come up in the media or the classroom, he is usually simply bashed or praised, depending on the viewpoint of the speaker. In either case, he remains more myth than man. Let’s revisit some of the biggest misconceptions about the explorer Monday’s federal holiday is named for……

You guys are missing the whole reason it even is a thing. Italian immigrants were not treated well. I know imagine that immigrants not treated well.

The whole holiday was because of a lynching of Italian in New Orleans the year was 1892 and 11 were killed by the mob. The president Harrison gave them a one day. If you look at why it is and not who it is it shouldn't be a problem.

It was supposed to be one time but a great party with great food and drink is hard to keep down. They just kept doing it.

The fifth of May is the same type of thing a great party with good food and drink to try and make American idiots not hate Mexican immigrants because Mexicans know how to have a good time. The 5th of May has the same meaning in all this as old Christopher did.

Columbus died in1506. That is 113 years before 1619. However, Columbus has become a symbol of oppression. If not Columbus it would have been many others making the trip.

I also believe Columbus was artificially made a big deal to unify those of European descent in the Americas. As we can see people need holidays to feel good about themselves.

Except Cinco De Mayo isn't a Federal Holiday, and it just started out as a way to promote and sell liquor and beer. Cinco de mayo wasn't started to make American idiots not to hate Mexican immigrants. Its just another reason to go to a Mexican restaurant and drink Corona's. Cinco De Mayo isn't a holiday just as Columbus day shouldn't be a holiday.

Columbus is nothing special, however he was used as the symbol of European settlement in North, Central, and South America. In the town where I grew up there is a huge statue of Columbus in the central plaza. The left has made Columbus a convenient symbol of oppression. I say they are much bigger fish to fry than Columbus.

Columbus us buried in Spain while the Dominical Republic claims they also have the tomb of Columbus.

"Spanish researchers said Friday that they have resolved a century-old mystery surrounding Christopher Columbus's burial place, which both Spain and the Dominican Republic claim to be watching over. Their verdict: Spain's got the right bones.

A forensic team led by Spanish geneticist Jose Antonio Lorente compared DNA from bone fragments that Spain says are from the explorer — and are buried in a cathedral in Seville — with DNA extracted from remains known to be from Columbus' brother Diego, who is also buried in the southern Spanish city.

"There is absolute matchup between the mitochondrial DNA we have studied from Columbus' brother and Christopher Columbus," said Marcial Castro, a Seville-area historian and high school teacher who is the mastermind behind the project, which began in 2002. Mitochondria are cell components rich in DNA.

He spoke a day before the 500th anniversary Saturday of Columbus' death in the northern Spanish city of Valladolid.

Castro and his research colleagues have been trying in vain for years to convince the Dominican Republic to open up an ornate lighthouse monument in the capital, Santo Domingo, that the Dominicans say holds the remains of the explorer.

    Dominicans dismiss findings
Juan Bautista Mieses, the director of the Columbus Lighthouse — a cross-shaped building several blocks long — dismissed the researchers' findings and insisted Friday that Columbus was indeed buried in the Dominican Republic.

"The remains have never left Dominican territory," Bautista said.

The goal of opening the lighthouse tomb was to compare those remains to the ones from Diego in Seville and determine which country had buried the man who arrived in the New World in 1492, landing at the island of Hispaniola, which today comprises the Dominican Republic and Haiti."

The right clings to its symbols with whining victim hood.

As for the assertion that others would have done what Columbus did if he hadn’t? Nobody gets to know what would have happened.

I, personally, don’t give a flying bleep at a rolling doughnut about Columbus. That being said celebrating those who were devastated by the invasion by Europeans may not resolve their issues but it makes more sense than having a Columbus Day.

Columbus died in 1506. That is 113 before the first slave came to America in 1619. Columbus had nothing to do with how things went in America.

Wrong, but unsurprising. Why did others follow Columbus? Because he returned. The events were put into motion by his return.

Taking down his statue or eliminating his “day” doesn’t erase him from history. Your whining about that is irrelevant. Revealing the warts in history is just as important as showing things deemed good by prevailing power structures.

You guys give way too much importance to Columbus who died more than 5 centuries ago. I would worry about present 2021 problems and try to fix and change what is obviously wrong today. Why are some minorities achieving and others are not? What is the difference? Why not copy the model of successful minorities in America and forget a man that has zero importance to what is going on in 2021?

Those who control the past control the future. That is the basis for the RW screaming into the whirlwind about cancel culture.

    What is a successful minority?
