Thought we should start thread here - over weekend, US carried out strikes against Houthi elements in Yemen in retaliation for their actions in Red Sea.

Houthi leader issued this statement- no US ships in Red Sea

Houthis then attempted to strike US Carrier group

This morning Trump took to Truth Social:

So any missile/shot fired from Houthi elements in Yemen will be considered coming from Iran. Obviously this is wrought with problems, but we know Houthis will respond and continue attacks.

So then what does this mean for Iran? Lots to unpack, but seems to me that the NO WAR POTUS is hell bent on getting into yet ANOTHER conflict in the ME. He is backing himself into a corner with statements and we could find ourselves embroiled in ME conflict again.

That seems like a facing saving, token retaliation. 6 missiles have no chance of getting through the missile defense systems. The only way this inflicts damage is if those missiles are carrying payloads of 60% enriched uranium. If they are, then the fallout from them will force the US to evacuate the base. That would be a big blow.

I don't think NATO has to assist a member country that is the aggressor against retaliatory attacks. Israel and the US against Iran and it's proxy states and terrorist organizations is very different from US with NATO assistance against Iraq and Afghanistan, and look how badly those two turned out.

Trump cannot request Article 5 unless he declares war on Iran.

Furthermore, he in a pickle. After all his demands and minimizing US committment to NATO and Ukraine, going to NATO looking for "assistance" puts him in a REALLY bad spot, optically. Both domestic and international.

He would go on his own here. Bet.

im sure its partly performative by Iran. But make no mistake, had just one of those got thru and killed a US service member, we have a totally different situation here.

and its not over just yet.

Even if he declares war and seeks Article 5 assistance from NATO, my understanding is that each country could refuse assistance because the US is the aggressor and not the defender against aggression.

Well alrighty then- just two kids poking fun at each other with bombs and missiles.

its all good now. We can go back to regularly scheduled programming.

what is NOT lost in this, is that Trump ALLOWED Iran to fire 6 MRBMs at US Airbase in Qatar. He knew and allowed it to happen.

Not just any airbase either, Al Udeid is the hub of all of CENTCOM operations in the region. It housed/transported multi-national forces and authored Air Tasking Orders.

The only time Art 5 has ever been invoked was 9/11.
