(CNN) — Hurricane preparations at Federal Emergency Management Agency have slowed to a crawl, and the disaster relief agency “is not ready” for the June 1 start to the season, according to an internal agency review obtained by CNN

Prepared at the direction of new acting Administrator David Richardson as part of a problem-solving exercise at FEMA, the document outlines the agency’s struggles in recent months and raises a number of red flags ahead of hurricane season, including a general uncertainty around its mission, lack of coordination with states and other federal agencies, low morale and new red tape that will likely slow responses.

“As FEMA transforms to a smaller footprint, the intent for this hurricane season is not well understood,” the document states. “Thus FEMA is not ready.”……….

It’s not ready because Republicans forked it up, period.

Not a tornado but we just had straight line winds break off a 30 ft tall maple tree in our yard. Broke it off about 5 feet off the ground. Parts of it hit our mature crab apple tree and may have damaged it, waiting for it to calm down out there to go look.

We have had more high wind days this spring than I ever remember. I’m so tired of the wind being so strong all the time.

Edit: about half the crab apple tree is gone as well, damaged when the maple hit it. Sigh.

I don’t have a clue if our homeowners will pay for any of this.

The stories coming out now about deadly tornadoes this past weekend with delayed warning b/c of understaffing is both heartbreaking and infuriating.

we are facing two issues- that and then post disaster coordination.

and hurricane season starts in 10 days.

Last i saw, LA has a 46% chance and FL has above 50% of landfall this season. Someone going to find out just how bad FEMA response will be.

I suspect the government will rally around " neighbors helping neighbors" mantra to placate the absence of FEMA coordination/abilities.

Acting Director was asked " Are you ready for Hurricane season"

Reply- Gimme few weeks to figure that out.

Somehow to Republican voters, the upcoming disaster of planning and recovering from hurricanes will all be the fault of Democratic mayor's and officials. They're responsible no matter the obvious culprits. It doesn't matter that everybody is sounding the five alarm fire now to warn everybody, somehow the people who aren't gutting FEMA and making these decisions will be responsible. Republican state governments won't be at fault either in the minds of Republican voters, even though they're the ones (according to Trump and his administration) who are supposed to be taking up all the slack and responsibilities that FEMA won't be doing. shirt show doesn't even start to describe this.

Wired is actually killing it for reporting. They’re offering a year for $12. I may have to try it.

Well here is the long range GFS ( screenshot is of June 11 )

( its LOOOONG range- so take with grain of salt, but its a harbinger of conditions that are favorable to produce major storms that is the real info here )

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he planned to start “phasing out” the Federal Emergency Management Agency after the hurricane season and that states would receive less federal aid to respond to natural disasters.

Trump also said he planned to distribute disaster relief funds directly from the president’s office.

“We’re going to do it much differently,” Trump said in a briefing at the White House in response to a question about when he planned to eliminate Fema and what his message was to governors regarding states bearing more disaster-relief costs.

“We’re going to give out less money,” he said.

“We’re going to give it out directly. It’ll be from the president’s office. We’ll have somebody here, could be homeland security.”

In an apparent reference to his plans to wind down the disaster-relief agency, Trump added: “I’d say after the hurricane season we’ll start phasing it out.”……..
