Former President D. Trump has been indicted by a New York Grand Jury. There will be much to talk about on this topic because this is just the first step in a lengthy process.
Possibly it is worthy of its own thread here rather than posting about Trump's indictment in already existing threads?

This 3/31/23 story might get the ball rolling....

The media needs to cover this. The sitting President used a burner phone routed through Egypt to call US state legislators and pressure them to overturn the election? And I’m just now reading about it?

Trump had help. He probably doesnt know what burner phone is. he is a clueless moron. 45 % of our nation will still vote for him. History says great nations never stay great forever. The Ottoman empire tried, but eventually collapsed. I am really worried about our future,

We need to adapt and evolve. Societies collapse when they don't adapt and evolve. That's what's the fatal flaw in MAGA. They want to devolve back to what we once were. The only way our society survives is if we adapt and move forward. Most of the people in our society know this and feel it in their bones, that's why "we're not going back" resonates with so many people and is such a powerful rallying cry.

Can you believe that early in Harris's campaign advisors told her to drop "we're not going back," because it was a loser? Just goes to show that even some "liberals/progressives" can sometimes be too conservative.

Yeah, and someone had to communicate to the state legislators to actually pick up a call that comes across as “Spam Risk, Egypt”.

A federal judge on Monday granted Donald Trump’s lawyers’ request to push back the deadline for filing their view of whether the former president is immune from prosecution in the 2020 election subversion case until two weeks after the presidential election.

Trump’s attorneys had asked to have until Nov. 21, instead of Nov. 7, to file an up-to-180-page brief arguing why Trump’s efforts to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory should be immune from criminal prosecution, citing disruptions caused by Hurricane Milton to the work of several of Trump’s Florida-based attorneys. U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan granted the request hours later, removing the possibility of the filing landing almost immediately after next Tuesday’s contest, when officials might still be counting votes.

The blockbuster filing is expected to be key part of the criminal case against Trump, which special counsel Jack Smith is seeking to salvage after the Supreme Court’s landmark July ruling establishing that presidents generally cannot be criminally tried for their official acts, with some exceptions.

“Specifically, the impacts of the hurricane, which remain ongoing for certain counsel, have substantially slowed progress on the Response,” wrote Trump attorneys led by Todd Blanche and John Lauro. “This, in turn, has limited counsel’s ability to thoroughly consider the Court’s extensive classified and unclassified discovery order and prepare an appropriate [motion].”

Lauro and Blanche noted that Smith has continued to turn over classified evidence in the case as recently as Monday, requiring lawyers to travel to a secure facility to review them. Trump’s attorneys also asked to push back completion of arguments over the immunity issue, evidence, and a separate challenge to the special counsel’s appointment and funding, from Dec. 5 to Dec. 19, making any oral argument or decision unlikely before the New Year. Chutkan granted all the requests...........

Legitimate. When a country allows its leaders to operate corruptly without consequences, well, this is what we get.
    In so many ways

"I could rape a woman and not lose any voters"

"I could commit tens of millions of dollars in tax/bank/loan fraud and not lose any voters"

"I could cheat on my wife (and recently born son) with a porn star, cover it up to win an election and not lose any voters"

"I could be responsible for hundreds of thousands of American deaths through negligence and/or incompetence and not lose any voters"

"I could be responsible for stripping women of rights they've had for 50 years resulting in pain and death and not lose any voters"

"I could illegally try to overturn a presidential election and not lose any voters"

"I could call the United States of America a garbage can and not lose any voters"

"I could put the well being, safety and lives of innocent legal Haitian immigrants at risk by lying about them and not lose any voters"

"I could incite a forking riot at the United States Capitol resulting in police officers' deaths and not lose any voters"

All true (sadly, heartbreakingly, infuriatingly true)

And people want to put the lions share of the blame of the election loss on Kamala Harris and what she did or didn't do and not on these people who freely (and clearly) were going to vote for Trump no matter what

At least everyone will see the truth.

Almost everyone knows the truth, like so many other horrible things, Trump supporters won’t care or at least will say they didn’t vote for his character. Of course that means you don’t really know what you’re getting. They’ll say they’re getting the guy they got previously, despite evidence to the contrary. Will he try to retain power again with more success? His supporters think that he won’t since he failed last time. They think normal systems will prevent it. Applying norms to Trump is a fool’s errand.

Before he is sworn in as president on January 20, Donald Trump will likely walk through the same tunnel where a mob of hundreds of his supporters, wearing hats bearing his slogan, bore down on police for three hours with their fists, pepper spray, stolen police shields and flag poles with the American flag twisted around them.

Some of the worst violence on January 6, filmed on hundreds of devices and livestreamed to millions of people, was captured in that tunnel, where Washington DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone was pulled to the ground by his neck, tased and beaten, while rioters yelled “kill him with his own gun.” He had a heart attack and fell unconscious.

The violence in and around the Capitol that day was fueled by a false, ongoing narrative that the 2020 election was rigged against and stolen from Trump, who is accused of enabling a mob that set out to do what he failed to.

On November 25, the Department of Justicespecial counsel who led two sprawling criminal investigations against the former president filed motions to dismiss them both, effectively throwing in the towel after a years-long attempt to prosecute Trump for 44 crimes, spelled out in hundreds of pages of evidence. Neither case made it to trial.

Jack Smith’s decision to end two federal criminal cases against Trump – for his efforts to overturn his 2020 loss and for withholding thousands of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago compound — was inevitable.

After months of delays, appeals and Supreme Court decisions that gave Trump exactly what he wanted, the cases were ultimately upended by Trump’s victory against Kamala Harris, throwing the courts and the Justice Departmentinto unprecedented territory. Can they prosecute a sitting president? No, according to the agency’s counsel. So that’s that.

Despite Trump’s public attempts to influence officials to overturn election results, impeachment hearings, congressional investigations, and real-time footage of the attack and Trump’s response, followed by hundreds of court filings that thread them all together, Trump has escaped any criminal consequences for his actions surrounding the 2020 election and its aftermath.

Now, Trump’s allies are planning how to execute his campaign of “retribution” against the prosecutors, judges and elected officials who put him in the crosshairs.……..

After successfully delaying Donald Trump’s chances of facing criminal consequences before he returns to the White House, his legal team is making another last-ditch effort to block a massive civil fraud judgment against him.

Trump has appealed that judgment, but his attorney D. John Sauer — the man Trump has nominated for the next solicitor general of the United States — is urging the state of New York to drop the case entirely as “necessary for the health of our Republic.”

Sauer’s letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James on November 26 invokes George Washington’s farewell remarks against “the spirit of revenge” and Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving address during the Civil War.

“In the aftermath of his historic election victory, President Trump has called for our Nation’s partisan strife to end, and for the contending factions to join forces for the greater good of the country,” Sauer wrote. “This call for unity extends to the legal onslaught against him and his family that permeated the most recent election cycle.”…..

How can I put this gently? Fork Trump, fork Sauer and fork this bullschlitz “for the greater good of the country”. Neither Trump nor Sauer give a flying fork at a rolling doughnut about the country.

Trumps Thanksgiving post didn’t make me think he wanted the ‘partisan strife to end’
