    Former President D. Trump has been indicted by a New York Grand Jury. There will be much to talk about on this topic because this is just the first step in a lengthy process.
    Possibly it is worthy of its own thread here rather than posting about Trump's indictment in already existing threads? :unsure:

    What is notable from these stories is that there isn't any mentioning on whether the documents belonging to the United States were returned. I would wager that those documents have been retained by the government. That video of them loading up AF1 with boxes was just another circus act.
     
    Democrats on the House judiciary committee on Friday will ask Aileen Cannon, the judge who presided over the case against Donald Trump for allegedly hiding classified documents, to release the portion of special counsel Jack Smith’s report concerning his prosecution.

    Smith is scheduled to appear next week for a behind-closed-door deposition with the Republican-led committee, where he may discuss his investigation into allegations that Trump took classified materials to his properties and then hid them from federal authorities.

    The special counsel dropped that case against Trump, as well as another concerning his meddling in the 2020 election, in the aftermath of his re-election victory last year.

    Cannon earlier this year ruled that the classified documents portion of Smith’s report stay unreleased, citing ongoing proceedings against two co-defendants in the case.

    However attorney general Pam Bondi dropped charges against those co-defendants earlier this year, and in a motion to Cannon shared with the Guardian, the Democrats will argue that there is now no reason to keep the second portion of Smith’s report from being released.

    “The rationale of this court’s prior order thus no longer applies. The criminal proceedings have been dismissed, and the House Judiciary Committee has proceeded with a formal investigation into the special counsel’s operations,” the motion will read.

    Bondi has also refused to release the classified documents portion of the report, and the judiciary committee’s 19 Democrats, led by ranking member Jamie Raskin, sent her a letter on Friday pressing for its release, noting that Smith is expected to discuss the contents in his deposition set for Wednesday.

    “For ten months you have had zero legal basis for withholding the report. Now you have authorized Mr Smith to testify behind closed doors about the investigation that the report memorializes – while still refusing to produce the report itself,” the letter reads.………

    Not all of them. There were some state cases he generally couldn’t shut down, but because he became President, he’s essentially mostly immune from them. Obviously, the federal cases are almost entirely useless. Thanks to SCOTUS he’s damn near untouchable now.

    Certainly there are cases against the Administration that affects them, but doesn’t affect Trump himself.

    Not sure what that has to do with the quoted post. And alternate universes are a nice mental exercise, that’s all it is.
     
    The House Judiciary Committee on New Year’s Eve released a transcript and videoof its closed-door hearing with Jack Smith, the former special counsel who led the two failed prosecutions of President Donald Trump.

    The deposition conducted earlier this month lasted more than eight hours, during which Smith was grilled by lawmakers over the twin criminal investigations into Trump – one probing the mishandling and retention of classified documents and a second inquiry into his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election.

    “The decision to bring charges against President Trump was mine, but the basis for nine of those charges rests entirely with President Trump and his actions, as alleged in the 10 indictments returned by grand juries in two different districts,” Smith told the committee.

    Republican lawmakers have lambasted the investigations as alleged “weaponization” of the justice system against the president and his allies, particularly criticizing Smith for subpoenaing the phone records of lawmakers who spoke with Trump about the election scheme.

    Smith vehemently denied his work was politically motivated.

    Giving testimony was a significant risk for Smith as Trump has called for him to be prosecuted.………
