Former President D. Trump has been indicted by a New York Grand Jury. There will be much to talk about on this topic because this is just the first step in a lengthy process.
Possibly it is worthy of its own thread here rather than posting about Trump's indictment in already existing threads?

This 3/31/23 story might get the ball rolling....

    Talk about an October Surprise.
I don’t think Trump can lose votes regardless of the evidence. His supporters don’t care what he’s done. All they care about is that he isn’t a Democrat or they think he will be a better president. The evidence can prove he killed someone, and it won’t matter to his supporters. The value of the evidence is that he might face justice.

It is the independent voters. If you look at the polls there are still 3-6% undecideds floating around. If they break 70-30 to Harris in PA and NC, then he loses handily.

I hope that is true, but I think those people are not undecided about whether Trump is a criminal. I think they are undecided about policies. At this point, no one reasonable believes Trump is innocent. They may believe everyone does it, so it won’t matter. Maybe it is a little hyperbolic to say evidence of killing someone wouldn’t matter, but I don’t think undecideds will be influenced by evidence that hasn’t been revealed. Here is an article about undecideds, and notice that none are wondering about his guilt.

Something negative happening like this will sway people. If they are on the fence, they are waiting for something to happen.

    Maybe

People said that they wouldn't support him if he was convicted of anything

E Jean Carroll Verdict, New York Verdict, Hush Money Verdict

    Many still support him

but the undecided aren't supporters of his. those are the ones who swing close elections. a 1% tip could be the difference in certain states..

I just don't see it changing any minds. Everything he's being accused of is in the public sphere and are known issues. A verdict might change some minds, but sentencing? Not likely.

Depends how bad it is. When the photos of the documents being in the bathroom came out he was at an all time low polling wise. The problem voters have is they forgot 30 days later so it needs to be on the press a lot and dominate the news.

What about all of the "fence sitters" you frequently talk about?

At this point, no one reasonable believes Trump is innocent.
There are 3 possible opinions, not just two. They are, believe he's guilty, believe he's innocent and don't know. Don't know is a reasonable opinion to have until evidence has been presented at trial.

Fence sitters don't count as losing a vote. It is possible that Trump could gain votes from fence sitters, but they're not his to lose yet. I don't think any evidence will lose him votes that have already stated they will vote for him. It is possible that those fence sitters may decide to vote for Kamala after seeing more evidence of Trump's guilt, but I highly doubt that fence sitters are going to be influenced by evidence of Trump's corruption. I think less than 1% voters don't have an opinion about Trump's guilt. Those that are convinced he is innocent, despite the mounds of evidence of his guilt, are not going to be influenced by additional evidence.

I should have qualified it as no reasonable likely voter thinks he's innocent. He's already been convicted recently 3 times, and any reasonable person that pays attention knows that he is guilty of much more. I would say less than 1% of likely voters don't know, but at least they don't think he is innocent. The remaining likely voters that think he is innocent don't fall into the reasonable category.

People have short memories. The weeks after Jan 6 he was despised. Suddenly everyone forgot. If new information comes out that depicts the crap he was doing it will impact him negatively. The key is that this sentiment carry long enough to be in people’s minds when they vote. People have forgotten how bad it was that day.
