While California is a safe Senate seat for Democrats, her absence is causing delays and friction in getting nominations through (which counters what I said in a previous thread). I think they're right for calling for her to step down. It seems selfish.

I agree, he did choose who he wanted. I'm just saying he shouldn't have committed to appointing a black female at the demands of others.

I mean, she just died today. That article was probably already written before she died. How bad could the pressure have gotten in 6 hours? Media is going to media.

anyone know if there is some sort of insurance/benefit advantage or difference to passing away as an active senator versus retired?

and if so could that have a reason she stayed on?

Ugh...why do they insist on corning themselves like this and limiting their options??? And why do soo many insist that they do? How about just doing it without making it such a big deal! These public announcements of appointing someone just because they check-a-box is just extreme pandering. These public vows also put that person at a disadvantage because, right or wrong, they will always be seen as an "affirmative action" pick rather than the most qualified for the job.

Things like this just feed the "reverse racism" narrative.
Imagine if the governor of Alabama announced that Tuberville's replacement will be a straight, white man?

Today is also the primary for Dianne Feinstein's seat. California puts all candidates, regardless of party, on one primary ballot and the two who get the most votes advance to the general election.

It seems Schiff is heavily favored as one of the two. I'm hoping the other is Katie Porter, whom I have a small crush on (with how she schools republicans)

The race is already the most expensive U.S. Senate contest in state history. Adam Schiff, a Burbank U.S. representative who has consistently led in polling, has spent a whopping $38 million ahead of the primary, outspending all his opponents combined and ranking second among all Senate candidates nationwide

Porter would be the most effective of them all, she has demonstrated a quick wit and intelligence to go along with her overall feistiness.

Garvey is not a good choice by the people of CA. He may not be quite as bad as Tuberville, but he’s not significantly better.
There are a lot of Republican voters in CA and Garvey got almost all of the Republican voters. Schiff and Porter split most of the Democratic voters. Schiff finished first, Garvey 2nd and Porter 3rd. Schiff will likely pick most of the votes cast for the other Democratic candidates. If he does, he'll win the seat.

I’m sure Schiff will win in the fall. Just thinking about Tuberville and Hershel Walker and how these guys often aren’t really serious political candidates. Porter is so much better than Garvey.

I'm a liiittle biased, but I thought she was better than all of them. A year or so ago I thought about making a Katie Porter appreciation topic on the forum here lol

Well, this is certainly an unforced error on Porter’s part. Ugh.

We definitely do not need that bullschlitz.

She lost. That is sad but it is what it is.

As for the azzhat known as Steve Garvey? Flock him.

Yeah, and the reason why she’s mad is that she says a Schiff supporter bolstered Garvey so that Schiff wouldn’t have to face another Democrat in the fall. I don’t know if that happened or not, but it isn’t “rigging” an election. I know other candidates have bolstered the weaker candidate in the other party in a primary hoping to get a more favorable opponent. It’s not rigging. She knows better, or she should.

The way Schiff "bolstered" Garvey was by running adds attacking him as a Trump Republican, thereby "raising his profile". I mean, if you can't run political adds by attacking your opponents for fear of raising their profile and hurting a fellow party member, I'm not sure how you're supposed to do "politics".

I mean, Porter realizes she's in politics, right? :idunno:

I just wish they both hadn’t decided to run for the seat. Either one would good as a senator but now we have some whining going on which helps nobody.

Yeah. I like Porter and wouldn't hold this against here, but it's petty. She needs to get over losing and move on. She was out maneuvered by her opponent Schiff, out financed and out spent. It happens in politics. Learn, build a stronger campaign next time and move on. Just don't wine about losing and claim a "rigged election" when you lost fair in square.
