There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

You know who joined Roberts and the liberal justices on this? Kavanaugh.

You just never quite know with these things.

Yeah, the SC is weird sometimes. I think it just goes to show that these justices are probably more independent than we give them credit for. They certainly don't vote in lockstep and I do think they mostly try to render decisions on the merits of each case.

And the reality is that most court cases that make it to the SC are enormously complex and verdicts are not always obvious or foregone conclusions.

I know my kid voted. Gotta ask about his friends.

The shocking thing is there are more than a few Trumpers among that age group. That said, a lot of them have indeed registered, but many, and I mean many have not voted yet. At least from all of the ones I've talked to and heard about in my area. Maybe not the same everywhere. But here, yeah.

Yeah, we all fork up our kids in some fashion..haha.

All this does, in my opinion, is guarantee that SCOTUS gets involved. The statement about the pandemic, however, is sickening...

This one will be interesting at SCOTUS. I think they allowed the NC change because the state legislature had expressly delegated contingency authority to the body that made the Covid changes. With the focus on the Election clause’s grant of power to the state legislatures, the Court seems to want to see these challenged rules come from either the legislature or a clear delegation by the legislature. Changes fashioned by a governor or state court without that delegation are problematic.

The MN change appears to come from such a delegation (as the dissent points out). Is the delegation express enough for the Court to overturn the 8th Circuit? That’s the question.

Haha, true dat. But hey, I wasn't remotely interested in politics until Perot came on the scene. In 1992. I was 21 then. After that, I didn't really follow politics much for several years. So, I guess it's pretty normal. Lol.

I imagine SCOTUS will have to rule on this pretty quickly. Wonder if they take this case and rule by Tuesday?

Proudly voted for President Trump and R across the board on Monday. Only had to stand in line for 20 minutes or so. The atmosphere was nice and positive.

Can't wait for November 3rd. Already got a nice win a few days ago with my homegirl ACB, hopefully America gets another big W on Tuesday. :)

I'm starting to have a weird feeling about Texas. From what I understand the youth vote is huge in Texas right now. That bodes well for Democrats.

I know it's fools gold, but if Tarrant County goes blue for the first time since LBJ ran I think the state goes that way, and right now Biden has the lead in polling there.

Reminds me of this prescient 2015 monologue by Mick Mulvaney (where he talks about Texas's changing demographics and how if the GOP fails to appeal to those demographics and loses Texas, it will be hard to ever win a presidential election).

I'm still hurting from that Chappelle SNL skit about the 2016 election night...

"Due to changing demographics, there may never be another republican president"

    'word?'

The pendulum will always swing. Always has, always will. Right now it's swinging towards the left in a lot of states, and people will eventually swing the other way. I know it's said somewhat jokingly, but the Presidency will always change hands at points in time. Nature of politics imo.
